Plus-Sized Models
Permalink

Research conducted at Simon Fraser University suggests the inclusion of plus-size models in advertising results in less motivation to have a healthy lifestyle, but critics say the results are overly-simplistic.

The study, The (Ironic) Dove Effect, claims one of the reasons why being larger-bodied appears to be "contagious" when seen in advertising is because it's seen as more socially permissible, especially when it's coupled with certain types of messaging.

The research suggests after having seen plus-size models along with those types of statements, the study's subjects made poor food choices, had lower intentions to exercise, and had lower support for programs that serve to curb obesity.

"There's some downside to using larger models and then coupling that with statements like, 'these people are real' or normal,' making some value judgements saying that it's ok to be overweight or obese," says study co-author Brent McFerran, assistant professor of marketing at SFU's Beedie School of Business.

Well, I have known people who were motivated to lose weight because they don't look good in clothes anymore.
I suppose if they see pretty clothes on pretty, fat models, their motivation may go out the window.

You want to say that to my fat face?

The article is pure BS.

I want to be represented in ads, not ignored like I don't exist because it is offensive to the skinny fat shamers.

Do you really think I'm going to buy an outfit modeled on a size 2 person?

Oh, hell no.

I like myself just the way I am. Get over it world.

The reality is there will always be fat women. Always. And offering them ugly clothes is not going to force them to become skinny. So if a marketer wants to grab that niche of the market then go for it.

Despite all our technology and medical advances, for the first time in recorded history, today's younger generation will live shorter lives than their parents, due to morbid obesity.
I find that horrifying.

Can you ever stay on-topic?

Everything has to be about Obama or abortion.

Yes, I think dropping dead from too many Twinkies is a tragedy.

Not all plus sized people are morbidly obese.

Fat people are still people. They deserve the same treatment as everyone else.

And a lot of models have extremely low BMI's which is also dangerous and unhealthy, and not something to be encouraged. Where is the uproar about that?

In todays youth eccentric and obsessive culture, being 10 pounds over weight gets you labeled as fat.

We are not teaching women to be self assured when the culture constantly fixates on "body image".

No one is perfect. But, that's not what the media wants the world to see. Even the media spokesman/women botox their faces and foreheads to keep that, oh so special, youthful look.

DH and I are both offended by the images of "perfection". We question their reliability and truthfulness. If you can't be true to yourself, you can't be true to anyone.

There was plenty of uproar over that. Some countries banned images of underweight models.

I'm fat. Don't like it? Don't look. I have one body and I don't give a single rip if it doesn't fit the world's idea of perfection.

Marketing is lost on me anyway. I don't like the stuff that usually ends up on mannequins. Never mind that a lot of the clothes marketed towards fat women are fugly.

I will be brave enough to say, I kind of agree with the study.

Mostly when I have expressed my desire to lose weight, my friends respond by telling me how beautiful I already am, telling me I don't have to "fit the mold", that I should love myself no matter my size. I do truly believe all of that, and love my friends for loving me. BUT I want to lose weight to be healthy. I want to be able to run down the street after my nephew's bike. I want to be able to join the company softball team. I want to live as long as possible.

As a society, it has become accepted to be obese. In my book, that is not ok.

I think you've hit on the bigger problem. "Plus sized" would seem to indicate too big. But that's not really true. Most of the plus sized models are just normal, healthy, sized woman.

although they are are still like 6' tall, I don't find that normal furious

 That's the thing.

What is considered plus size is a normal size.

So how is that encouraging  people to be fat?

Marilyn Monroe was a size 16 in her era and was considered perfect. Top pinup girl of all time.

IMHO, these "plus-size" models are a reflection of what a healthy woman really looks like.

I don't care how fat you are.

I don't care if you get around in a motorized scooter.

I don't care if you exert your own gravitational pull.

All I'm saying is that obesity shouldn't be encouraged or glamorized.

And yes. She is fat.

But she represents a real portion of women.

If I'm buying a dress, I want to know what it will look like on someone who looks like me.

A dress will look completely different on a size 2, a 10 or 22.

So, IYHO an obese woman should not feel glamorous, or look beautiful, or wear makeup, or pretty clothes, etc., right?

Are you the thought police?

Of course not. But, it also shouldn't be ostracized. People come in all shapes and sizes. Models should represent that.

Also, not all fat people are fat because of laziness. I'm tired of the general attitude that fat automatically means lazy.
