A 71-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a 56-year-old woman who jumped from a third-story window of an Upper East Side building landed on top of her on Friday. 

The jumper leapt from a building on First Avenue near 51st Street around 3.15pm on Friday. 

The jumper was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital and the victim was taken to Cornell University Hospital with serious injuries.

The woman who was hit was walking on the sidewalk when she was struck from above, ABC 7 reported.  

The jumper's husband and several other people tried to help her. She was described as being 'a little hysterical' but also 'stable'.

Witness Andre Ferrier said: 'I heard a man scream and as soon as I turned... I was literally about ten feet away from the woman when she hit the ground.'

If you are going to try to kill yourself, would you really think 3 stories would do it? I mean, i guess for her she suceeded, but if you are going to jump, that doesn't seem high enough.

Depends on how you land I guess.

It also looks like she was 4 stories up. The bottom floor looks like businesses.

I feel really bad for the woman on the ground.

And what's so sad, at her age, she could die as a result of the injuries.

Develop pneumonia or something like that.

If someone wants to commit suicide, more power to them. But please do not involve other people by jumping off a building, throwing yourself on the tracks of a train, etc.
