DH rented the remake of "Vacation."

NJN, have you seen it?

flan

Nope.  I debated renting it.  Let me know if it's any good.

I never saw the original. This is crude, but funny...

flan

I was wondering if it was appropriate for SS.

NOPE...well, no violence, just cussing, sex talk, puking...

OMG, Chris Hemsworth just appeared.

Chris Hemsworth was wearing nothing but boxers...I don't care if he's actually NOT that well endowed...Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?

We met the other family that we adopted today. We talked to her for a few minutes and gave her groceries and presents. We met the kids. The one year old was just adorable. The mom told us a bit about herself and how she's struggling. No sob story just stuff that had happened. Three days ago she hit a deer in her van. When the lady got home she messaged me with the nicest message. Thanking us and telling us we were a blessing. I had put a cake mix and frosting in each box of food we gave out. She said she was going to use it to make her son a birthday cake on Christmas eve since she couldn't afford to buy him one. Everything was worth it at that moment.

I had an awesome night out with friends. Sitting in a parking lot sobering enough to drive home. It has been the best birthday in a long time

Funny you should mention that.  One of the projects DD's leadership team did was to collect the makings for giving kids a birthday.  They collected gifts, cake mixes, and frosting as well as candles.  It was a hit!

I think sometimes we forget the little things.  It was great hearing her say her son would be able to have a cake.

LL, it's a good movie.  You and the girls will love it.

Isn't it?  I think it takes the ideas of kids to know what is important to them.  A simple homemade cake means so much.

I think sometimes it's easy to take for granted the things we have. We feel like if we can't buy a $80 birthday cake from the special bakery for our kids we're somehow not doing enough. We forget there are kids out there that get NO cake. It really makes you stop and think and appreciate what you have.

I think the homemade one is more special than an expensive bakery cake.  Most kids want the homey feel.

Do people really pay $80 for a kid's birthday cake?

(Yes, I know there are people who have a party for all their business clients, maybe 200 people, and the kid's birthday is an excuse. OTHER than them.)

I've paid $100.  But it was an INCREDIBLE cake and made the party.

We were spoiled with a wonderful bakery in town when I was a kid.

They were beautiful and tasted great.

I'm talking cakes like on Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes.

The flowers were real sugar.

And then when that store closed after the owner died, we had a friend who made our cakes.

Wonderful cakes.

I've never paid more than $30 for a cake. It was a full sheet cake.

Even my wedding cake was a gift from the baker friend.

Caitlyn's 18th birthday we had a party.

That cake should have been $200-$300.

But it was gifted by one of her friend's mother who did them for a living.

Now, the kids and my niece and nephew ask me to make their cake or pie.

Caitlyn wants a triple chocolate wit strawberry cream cheese frosting.

Jesse is chocolate with a peanut butter icing.

Aaron is apple pie or cobbler.

Nephew is blueberry pie.

Niece is a dark chocolate pound cake with caramel glaze.

They ask for their cakes every year.

I usually buy a cake for the party with her friends- this year it's $40, and make a cake for the celebration with our family. My baking tastes great, but doesn't look that special.. so I only do it for family, lol.
