DEAR HARRIETTE: My husband and I have attracted an unpleasant holiday guest. We have known this woman, Agnes, for years. Agnes has never been in a relationship, never had children and spent her entire life working. She is in her 50s and does not bring any joy to our holidays. She does not have any contact with her family and does not have anyone to celebrate the holidays with if we don't invite her. After years of inviting her and listening to her lament about regrets and mistakes in her life, we would like to have total happiness in our Christmas celebration. Is there any tactical way to tell Agnes to stop depressing everyone, or should we see how a holiday is without her? -- Holiday Debbie Downer, Boston
DEAR HOLIDAY DEBBIE DOWNER: You do not have to invite Agnes to your celebration if you don't want to do so. Know that. If you feel like you cannot leave her out, by all means tell her that you want to invite her and that you want her to be happy. Have an honest conversation with her about the kinds of things she usually talks about and how it affects people. Ask her to choose to be positive, even if that means listening to others rather than bemoaning her life all night.
Think Agnes is the one who hates Christmas from the other letter?
I don't invite people I don't want to be around.

BIL is like that. Last year we lied and said we were going out of town. He got super pissed and didn't talk to us for a long time (he was pissed that we were going out of town, he doesn't know that we didn't). We even called his BF to make sure he hadn't hurt himself.
We are ALL miserable when he is here. This year, he decided on his own he wasn't coming. I hate it that he will not have a Christmas, but geez...you would have one if you didn't ruin it for everyone else.

Plus, lies to protect people aren't bad. I could say, you whinny, little butt, we don't want you around us. And the kids don't want to be around you. Do you think I should have taken that approach, Weltz?

Funny how it carries no weight until a non believer wants to use it as a weapon.

You don't understand the dynamic. He would be THE only person left out. Our ENTIRE family consists of 13 people (including BIL) and the 2 babies. It's can't get any smaller than that.

I have someone who I really don't want to come to my Christmas Eve party but there is no way around it. I didn't go out of my way to invite them but I'm sure they will come. I don't want to post the reasons but since this party is yearly people automatically know they are invited so I'm leaving it at that. If they come they come.
I have an aunt and a friend like this. Never has anything nice to say about anyone or anything.
I avoid them.

I think the LW would do her "friend" a world of good by politely pointing out to her how she makes people around her feel with all her negative talk. One of my sisters is very good at deflecting the hate speech by such people. She has to host many parties a year for her business. What she does when she hears the "talk" coming is pulls that person into the kitchen to help with things. When the duties are done and the person is back talking with others negatively, my sister will interrupt the conversation by asking a question that totally changes the topic such as" Oh Debbie that vaca you took, the pictures of the sunset were beautiful, how did it feel to experience that? It distracts the negative person, sometimes puts them in a good mood, at least for a few moments.

Being depressed and unhappy doesn't give you license to run around and constantly rain and piss on someone else's parade. Yes, depression is a miserable partner in life and there are people who suffer from it. But, there are times you have to put down your own pain for the sake of other's joy.
Meh. I have a weird cousin. She never moved out from her parents' home. She only had one job which was short-lived. She's an attorney and appears to be intellectual. But when you talk to her, you have no idea WTF she's talking about. Rather than exclude her, I will smile, ask her how she is doing, then in a break from her tirade, will excuse myself to do something. Then just talk to people with whom I have more in common. Give her a hug and wish her well as she is leaving.
It's not that difficult to get along with someone for a day.

That's right. Just because someone blurts out a laundry list of problems doesnt mean it's your job to fix their life for them. Just nod and say "oh that's too bad" and then get back to eating, drinking and making merry!
