On the mom site I belong to they were discussing today how many gifts Santa leaves your kids and does he leave them wrapped or unwrapped. One mother wrote in with this. I thought you would appreciate it.
I try to have the santa gifts to be not so big for two reasons 1. I worked hard to get them that stuff I want credit for it. 2. They may have kids in school who didn't get much- now kids understand parents not having much money but Santa is for everyone and I don't want them to say santa brought me a bike and video games and... when the kid next to him got a very small present from Santa Does Santa like my kid more than the other?

She can do she wants to--but I think expecting all parents to follow suit just because you (not you, specifically, but you know what I mean) want them to is silly.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Long after I knew the truth about Santa, I had a friend in grade school whose dad apparently even left manure on the lawn and told the kids it was reindeer poop. He swore I was wrong about Santa, LOL. I think that's taking it way too far.
I just saw it and thought of you husker. I do what I want to do. That mom an do what she wants.

Yeah--it was sort of like that other thread we had. I have no problem with this mother doing what she wants to do. What I have a problem with is other mothers demanding that people that have more money than they do--which in some cases could be damn near everybody--"cut back" on their Santa gifts just because they can't afford as much.

Yep. You can never make life totally fair. It's not fair for "rich" parents to have to only spend $20 because some poor single mom can't afford any more than that.

What isn't taught very much anymore is how to be nice about it.
It's fine to give your kids what ever you want.
It's also important to teach your child not to make fun of another child cause they didn't get the latest and greatest.

What I buy my kids is my business. It's not my job to worry about your kids. We adopted two families this year so yeah, we've done our share in helping others out. I refuse to feel bad about what I buy MY children.
However, you bought your daughter a bike and a big fancy tv. In all fairness a lot of kids won't get even close to that for Christmas. If you are worried about other kids being upset about what your kids get then maybe you should take some of it back and give some to those needy kids.

What the heck?
Why did you feel the need to make this personal? I wasn't addressing you in my posts. I didn't even address the gifts that some give. I was talking in general about kids and bragging and mocking. A general statement pointed at no one in particular.
I refuse to fight with you.
You want to make personal attacks? Go ahead.
I will consider the source.

I'm sad that neither of my children nor spouses don't want their kids to believe in Santa Claus.
What? That is sad.
I still believe in Santa.
Or the spirit of Santa anyway.

Nah. She wouldn't do that because she got sooooo mad at some one else for doing it...

So again, for husker. Same mom site. This lady was trying to trade her diamond necklace on Christmas eve because she PROMISED her six year old daughter that Santa definitely would bring her an ipad. Mom couldn't afford an ipad.

I know. This is not everyone else's problem. Nor Santa's. You don't set your kids up for disappointment.

Yep. SS called earlier. We broke down this year and bought a video game. The one where the kids could do the interactive thing. Like play sports. He has an XBOX 360 at home. Santa gave him an XBOX ONE at his mom's. Sigh.

I just HATE seeing young kids glued to some damn electronic device.
PLAY. IMAGINE. SING. BUILD A BLOCK TOWER.
flan
I'm glad DS didn't have access to the same devices when he was growing up. We would TALK on long car rides, etc.
We have definitely had issues with homework vs video games.

Good grief. Why do you even have a diamond necklace if you can't afford an ipad?
See, that's what irritates me about people who don't have a lot of money, or say they don't. They buy stupid crap and then wonder why they don't have any money.

It could be--but then I think selling a family heirloom for an ipad is ridiculous. If she needs to pawn it to put food on the table, great--but this is not that.
It's still the same principle.

Might that Principle be, "People who are broke, are broke because they make bad decisions"???

That is really sad. Santa exists in the hearts of children.
It's not sad actually. Neither of my kids were told about Santa. I just asked them if they felt traumatized by it or if it made them wish they had been believers. They both said they thought the whole tradition was silly, they remember their Christmases fondly and with lots of love and laughter and they wouldn't have changed a thing about their holidays. So it isn't sad at all actually. Just different from what you are used to.

Really? A parent who wants to give their kid things that would bring them joy so much so the parent is willing to part with a diamond necklace and people think that is selfish?

The diamond necklace passed on to that same kid in a few years would be much more meaningful and a great inheritance.
That ipad will not be worth anything in a few years. The diamond necklace would increase in value.
Choose wisely as to what is really important.

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.
I was answering why someone who can't buy their kid gifts could possibly have a diamond necklace.
And, just because it is a diamond necklace, doesn't mean it is a pricy diamond necklace.

I doubt you can buy much by pawning off a hundred dollar necklace. Or even a couple thousand dollar necklace. They only give you a few cents on the dollar when you pawn or sell.

She probably already tried to pawn it and found out just how much it wasn't worth. NJN said she had posted wanting to trade. Probably on a local town FB yard sale site.

When I became unable to work and after coming to the end of my savings, I began selling things.
I did hang onto a few things I want my kids to have someday.
But if it came down to a necklace or food on the table, well, the necklace would be sold.
Now I know the iPad is not food.
But I know what it is like to not be able to buy a single Christmas gift for your child.
I get flak for what I give my kids. But there was more than a few that I wasn't able to give them anything at all.

By all means, let's give kids whatever they want. That's a good plan.

It's adults.

The implication was there. Obviously, if you can't afford an ipad--then you probably shouldn't be buying one regardless of the circumstances.
I'm also willing to bet that if you have to hock a diamond necklace to do it--there are probably a LOT of other things you could use the money for other than an ipad.

It isn't--but then these same people are whining about not having enough money for this or that when they are the ones making the bad decisions that make it so.
Also, while we don't know it to be the case with the diamond necklace mom--IF you are receiving government assistance, then yeah, it does kind of become other people's business, specifically those who are funding you. They may not be able to do a lot about it, but if they are critical, so be it.

There are a whole heck of a lot of people who can make ends meet but that's it.
So they sell things, trade and whatever to be able to get that one gift for their kid.
I'm not even bringing anything in about those cheating the system.
Just that the working poor are just that. Working and poor.
