This is what Tamir Rice's toy gun looks like next to a real weapon
3:36 p.m. ET
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty announced Monday that neither police officer on the scene would be indicted in the fatal shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old black boy who had a toy gun.
Calling Rice's death "a perfect storm of human error" but not a crime, McGinty focused heavily on Officer Timothy Loehmann's belief that Rice's gun was real — and that Rice appeared older than 12 — in the two seconds before he fired at the boy.
The 911 dispatcher didn't relay to the responding officers that the gun was probably fake and that Rice seemed quite young, McGinty said. He also added that the Rice shooting may not have happened at all if toy manufacturers made fake weapons that "screamed toy."
Here's a side-by-side look at Rice's fake weapon (which was missing its orange tip) next to a real one. Julie Kliegman
Prosecutor shows Tamir Rice's toy gun next to real gun, says it's "impossible to say which one is real."
this photo is for comparison only--not quite the same as seeing either weapon from five or six meters away ( lethal range ) and having it pointed in your direction--the article was also careful to mention that the replica was without it's distinctive orange tip--if either of the two in the photo were pointed at me would take them for genuine and shoot first

Also, if you are looking into the barrel of the replica (without the orange tip attached) it would not be apparent that it was a toy.

I would assume that a gun in evidence would have to be handled in such a way as to not leave fingerprints - thus the glove.
But in the moment I would not know which was which. However, they asked him to drop the gun and the boy was reaching for the gun to drop it...so don't shoot him for following directions.

The cop shot him before the car come to a stop. THAT is what I have a problem with. They literally took no time to asses the situation. None. The car was not stopped when they shot him. They asked him to drop it and put his hands up, he reached for the gun to drop it, and they shot him for listening.

Why can't the toy makers make it impossible to remove the orange plug? Paint the entire barrel bright orange?
But but but... Then my little thug wouldn't have a "realistic" gun! (sarcasm)

From what I heard, he wasn't even holding the gun. It was on the table. They pulled up screaming, and he probably didn't even process what they were saying and shot him dead in less than 4 sec.
I have no problems with kids having real and toy guns.
I do have a problem with real guns looking like toys, and toy guns looking like real guns.
And air soft guns can cause serious injury. Haven't you seen A Christmas Story? You can shoot your eye out.

The car they were driving had not come to a complete stop by the time they fired the first shot. That is not right. At all.

I agree. The boy had no time to even process or react to whatever they were yelling at them. He was sitting down. The gun wasn't even in his hand from the reports i have heard. They didn't even give him a chance to react or hear what they are saying. It's like they taser the crap out of someone who writhes around and they keep screaming at them to "lay still" while they keep tazing them. They can't! It's idiotic.
we weren't there--we don't have all the facts--we're looking at A PHOTO of the replica and it looks pretty genuine (and that's without allowing for a bit more distance/movement)--a tragic incident to be sure but, as the prosecutor stated, certainly not criminal

Actually, the video is available and I have watched it. I suggest you do too. It's disgusting and it shows CRIMINAL behavior by the cops.
