Russian, then French, then English, then Polish, then Spanish. The first three I speak fluently, the other two, enough to get by.
English was the hardest. There are no rules, only exceptions. It's all memorization.

I love languages. I know a few words in Russian. I'm semi-fluent in French though out of practice. I can get by in Spanish, Italian, and German. I've discovered that I can fairly accurately read Portuguese thanks to knowing French and Spanish.
I'm currently learning Swedish - no reason, just wanted to because I can. It's not too hard yet.
I took one semester of Japanese and failed miserably. I think if I had one full semester or two to just learn the alphabets (they have 3 - sheesh!), I might be successful.
English is a pain in my rear and I'm a native speaker. There are some rules but there's an exception for each one, it seems.
Japanese is a lot easier to learn to speak than to read.
Somewhat. I struggled with both but did have an easier time saying the words than reading them.

Learning the basic alphabet sounds allows you to pronounce anything. But what makes it easier than most other languages is the sentence and grammar structure. It's pretty easy.

I had trouble saying some of the sounds. I do want to give it another shot though. It bugs me that I couldn't master it.
I know enough Spanish to find the bathroom, order food and watch out for wet floors.
I can figure things out when reading it but if you speak too fast, forget it.
I took french. I can talk dirty to ya. I can figure out most of it when reading it. But I butcher it when I try to speak it.
German is kind of fun.

I took 4 years of German but have mostly forgotten it. I did manage to order food when I was there. I also managed to get us completely lost when put in charge of reading the map. But that could have happened just as easily if the map had been in English.
I can say cheese in German, French & Italian That came in handy when I wanted cheese added to my dish one evening & the waitress spoke zero English.
My brother is fluent in Spanish. He went to Japan with his professor.
He met a Japanese girl who spoke spanish.
He said she became his tour guide.
