CAN'T (not won't but can't) go a day without drinking
gets belligerent if, for whatever reason, alcohol is unavailable
frequently, if not daily, drinks excessively
alcohol is more important to them than their family/friends
gets belligerent if they get cut off
Stuff like that. I look at the whole picture.
I don't define it as 'anyone who drinks more than me' because that's just silly. I drink maybe once every few years. I don't think anyone would like to be held to that standard for being alcoholic

Generally, yeah. It's not just one factor.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Fine. Booze it up. Every day. No problem. If you can't tell the difference between coffee, prescribed medications and liquor, that's a problem in itself.
Who's boozing it up? Can you not actually have an actual conversation or debate about anything without your snark? DH doesn't drink so it isn't something i would do daily. He grew up in alcoholic home so he doesnt' like to be around it which is fine because i don't care about it all that much one way or another. But, if i am out with friends i can enjoy some wine or beer, big whoop. But, there are people in our social circle who drink daily. They aren't alcoholics. You can label them whatever you want to label them but they are normal people going to work and living their lives like anyone else. I don't see that they are having a problem. So, yeah, there are alcoholics and they need help and should get help.
AGAIN...I'll type slowly....I never said anything about alcoholics.
If you need a drink every single day, you have a problem.
If you can't let a single day go by without alcohol, you have a problem.
Husker WANTS to drink. Probably daily. I don't know. I don't know him personally but it doesn't seem like he has a "problem" with alcohol. He just enjoys it. Just like 04 enjoys her Jack Daniels.

I wasn't talking about husker. I was using "you" in the general term.
I don't really care if husker drinks every day or not. I don't care if he justifies it by saying he doesn't really need it.
I'm saying that if you can't go one day without drinking you have a problem.

Nah. I like to drink, but not nearly every day. Couple of times a week.
My issue is that using one narrow minded criteria to define an alcoholic is just wrong. Not even the so-called experts make such a daffy claim.
its not about one factor. those who drink a glass of wine every night with dinner are not alcoholics. Neither is someone who drinks a gallon of champagne and gets stumbling down drunk atbhis buddy's destination wedding if that is the only time he's been drunk in months or years.
Yes, frequency is ONE factor. Amount is ONE factor. So are about six or eight other things. You have to look at the totality of a situation.
