Dear Harriette: Circus is No Fun
Permalink

DEAR HARRIETTE: My twin children received an invitation in the mail to a classmate's birthday party. After reading the invitation, I realized this party was at a circus that uses animals in their performances. My children have never seen animals in the circus and are a bit too young to understand the plight of the wild animals forced to perform for humans. I do not want them attending this birthday party and will have them drop off a gift at their classmate's house the day before the celebration. I am not sure if I want to explain to my children why they are not going at the risk that they'll speak about it in school and offend the birthday boy and his parents. I was planning on telling them we are having a family day or offering to go to a nature preserve to see animals. My husband is neutral about the whole situation. Should I tell my children why they aren't going to the party? -- No Juggling Cruelty, Detroit

DEAR NO JUGGLING CRUELTY: You are absolutely entitled to your views and stance on the use of animals in entertainment. Since you feel so strongly, it is understandable that you would not want your children to participate in the circus. I like your idea about taking them on a family date to a nature preserve. It shows another side of engaging animals.

I agree that you should not tell your children right now why they aren't going to their friend's party. It would be natural for them to share what they learned from you the next time they see their friends at school. For now, let them know that they can't go because of a previous family commitment. Later on, begin to talk to them about how animals are treated and used in our society and how you feel about it.

Oh FFS.

It's one damn circus. The circus is going to perform whether or not your kids are there.

What a fun-hater.

It's not like she's taking them to a bar to do some shots and then on to a strip club for some lap dances.

MILLIONS of children enjoy circuses each year.

The last time I went to a circus with animals, a disco ball was rolled across the stage. Very pretty, with the lights glittering off it. There was a majestic black panther jammed inside it. It was a disgusting display, and the last time I went.
I wouldn't let my child attend, either. It's like having a party at a puppy mill.

I'm not sure I'd let my kids go either. DD already knows why we don't go to the circus. We took her once a few years ago, and I felt bad for all of the animals and I don't want to go back.

"Look at me! I approve of animal abuse!"
It goes both ways.
Damn right I care about the poor circus animals. Someone has to.
I suppose you wouldn't mind spending your life chained, caged, beaten, and forced to perform for idiots.
What fun!

Whether or not you go to a circus--I don't care.

You just don't have to ruin crap for everyone else.

Yeah, in this case it rather is.

Making your moral stand over some kid's birthday party puts a damper on the festivities.

But they aren't mentioning it to the birthday child's parents.

They aren't even going to explain it to their own children, at this stage of the game, since they think their kids are too young to understand.

That was my take on the letter.

I disagree. She's not sending her regrets with pamphlets on animal abuse, she's not even mentioning why they aren't going.

Well, MAYBE next time they will choose a different venue.

Even as a child, I hated watching a circus on TV.

Activists Ask Parents, Kids to Boycott Circus
Circus workers train and handle elephants by striking them with a bullhook or digging it into the most sensitive parts of the animals’ bodies.
Violent and cruel training methods, which also include the use of whips, electric prods, chains
and muzzles, are routinely used in circuses, including Ringling, which issues "sucker" statements,
claiming that its animals are well treated, to the media at every stop.
Ringling is a chronic violator of the federal Animal Welfare Act and has an abysmal history of deaths of animals in its care,
particularly in a recent two-year period:
* Two baby elephants died at Ringling.
One was forced to perform despite being visibly ill, costing the circus nearly $20,000 in a settlement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture
The other baby elephant drowned while being chased by a trainer.
* A horse known to be suffering from a chronic condition collapsed and died during Ringling’s animal march in Norfolk, Va.
* A tiger was shot dead while locked in his cage by a Ringling trainer.
* A wild-caught sea lion was discovered dead in her small transport cage.
"Beatings are part of everyday life for animals in circuses," says MAARA co-founder Bianca Phillips.
"We believe that if parents and kids are told the truth about the misery and suffering of animals in circuses,
they'll stop buying tickets."

I loved the circus.

My kids loved the circus.

Barnum and Bailey puts on the best circuses.

We love zoos, rodeos, Sea World, Busch Gardens, aquariums and petting zoos.

They all have a place in teaching kids about animals. Creating a love of animals.

We never would have seen a dolphin, whale, lion elephant or any of the other animals of the world without those places and events.

No. Animals should not be abused.

But there is nothing wrong with training an animal to do tricks and putting on shows.

So glad my kids got to be kids.

While all circus animals suffer abuse, the animals that belong to the Ringling Brothers and Barnam and Bailey troupe are especially mistreated. The blatant violations of the Animal Welfare Act and deep history of cruelty and misconduct all to rarely come to mind when audiences hear the name “Ringling Brothers and Barnam and Bailey,” so let’s for a moment, pull back the curtain and expose what really goes on under the big top.

At the age of 18-22 months, babies are removed from their mothers (who are forcibly restrained to prevent them from acting out to try and rescue their babies) and anchored to one another by ropes that are fastened around their necks. They then enter a six-month “breaking” process where their legs are tied together and they are forced to stand still for 23 hours a day. This process hinders every natural instinct a young elephant may have, and their days are spent in pain and anguish, deprived of the basic ability to even sit down for hours on end. By the end of these excruciating six months, these elephants lose all willingness to fight back and enter into the training process.

Using bull hooks, ropes, electric prods, and even fireplace pokers, elephants are forced to bow, lie down on command, and balance on their hind legs. This process is hidden completely from the public and is wholly unmonitored by any federal, state, or local entity.
