You know what you can use instead? Pomegranate syrup.

It's a beautiful ruby red. Don't get the juice, as it will water your recipes down.

Get the syrup. It's very red and very sweet. You'll only need a little.

OMGosh!  That's a wonderful idea!  I don't really ever make red stuff.  My DH LOVES red velvet but I rarely make it.  We just don't have hardly anything in the house that has red dye in it.  I cook from scratch so none of my stuff comes from "mixes" where there is red dye this and red dye that.  We used frosting in the tube at Christmas to decorate cookies.  But that was a no brainer.  We left a bunch without red on it.  I just thought home made red velvet would be really fun today.  And it was.  And the kiddo ate the marshmellows anyway.  None of my kids are huge sweets eaters.  They got beef jerky and nuts for Valentine's instead of candy.  They like chips though!

 Well, now you can.

I usually have some in the house. I like to add a bit to sparkling water and it turns into pomegranate soda.

And it's delicious.

It also comes in a paste or molasses form.
People use that to make Khoresht Fesenjan, a Persian beef or chicken, pomegranate and walnut stew.
Unbelievably good.
I haven't made it myself, but I've had it in Persian restaurants. I have some family members at the nursing home who always bring me some when they make it, because they know I like it so much.

Chips can have red dye too.

So can yogurts, even those that are not red.

Crackers, pretzels, jerky.

Even things that are "golden" can have red dye.

Medicine.

It's crazy the stuff with red dye you wouldn't even think about.

Lily, please don't take this snarky but I read labels. I have one child with an allergy to red dye and one that can't eat gluten. I can't afford to NOT KNOW what is going into my family's bodies.

Welts, that is so cool to know. We have a store downtown that sells all that "weird" stuff. Not really weird but stuff you wouldn't normally be able to find at Wal-Mart or the local mom and pop shop. I can look there and if all else fails I'm sure I can find some online to order!

And I said I didn't intend for it to sound snarky. I just HAVE to read labels.

Lol @ weird stuff!

My city has a massive immigrant population. All that "weird stuff" can be found on every corner.

However, I get what you're saying.

Anyway, try using the pomegranate syrup as a colorant.
Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Momala.

I found some recipes when I googled. It doesn't look hard to make. You just have to wait around for it to be ready to drink. Or use in a cake.

I guess I'll give it a try.

It could be a fun experiment.smile

The better limonchello recipes take a long time to make. Like weeks or months I think.

Yes, I noticed that some can take a while, SB.

I think I'll try a middle of the road recipe. (One that would be ready to go in a month, to start.)smile

Buy it. But make sure it was made in Sorrento or the Isle of Capri.

DD made white chocolate covered oreo/cream cheese balls. I am making pork chops, stuffing, quarted buttered parsely potatoes, green beans for dinner.

I might do that, FNW. (Villa Massa was the brand that I read somewhere is good. I'll have to check at the liquor store.)

We could work on that, while we wait for mine to be ready.wink

Triple chocolate cake. I decided not to frost it.

The only time I ever had it was in Sorrento on my honeymoon.  They told us that was where the real stuff was made.    Who knows.
