We got the word today when our forced vacation will be. It's the week after I have been planning to meet family in Vegas. Boss said last week I most likely would be allowed to take vacation when I had scheduled, I just need to figure out what I want to do now. I don't really want to take almost 2 weeks off......

 Forced vacation?  Why is this?

my plant announced two one week shut downs for first half of the year. we are expected to use our vacation time during the shut down. The first one is in March, the week after I had planned my vacation. I've been planning this vacation for over a year, and now I'm not sure what to do. My boss already said I will probably be able to take the time I requested, but that would mean I would be off for almost 2 weeks. Or do I try to change the dates of my vacation? Do I ask if I get to work during the shut down? I don't know what to do.

They have two week long shut downs planned (cost savings measure) We are expected to use vacation time during those weeks we are off work.

DG, they almost always have a small crew/person, working during a shut down.

See if you can keep your vacation as planned. And be the person, working shut down week.

It never hurts to ask.smile

And my friend was supposed to come with me. We work together. Honestly, my boss loves me and I'll probably get whatever I decide to ask for. Her? Not so much, he kinda hates her lol

Oy, oy, oy!

I'm sorry to hear that, DG.

Is there enough time to change your plans by a week?

There might be. I'm not sure yet, I'm supposed to meet family in Vegas. That would be the biggest hurtle.

I'm also not sure if I want to change my plans. I picked those dates for a reason.

I'm just upset. And mad. And lonely. It's just one of those days.

DG, put it out of your mind for tonight.

Get a good nights sleep.

See how you feel about it all, in a day or two.

Just relax, and let it go, for tonight.

You'll figure it out later. You're a smart gal.

Just an idea.smile

Thanks FWM. I have to be that upbeat, positive person at work. I just need to be pissy tonight

It's okay to be pissy once in awhile. I would be pissy too if my plans where being messed with.

Have a cup of hot chocolate and sleep on it. FWM is right, you know. smile

Czech is right.  IMO, it's perfectly okay to be pissy every once in awhile.

I went with a bottle of wine over hot chocolate.

DS had his 2 year appointment today. He got one shot and his lip came out just a little then went right back in. He also had his 2 year blood work and whimpered a little bit when they put the needle in but dried up quickly and watched them. Such a brave and awesome boy!

I am doing an exercise program with my sister. She's been texting me, bugging me if I've done my workout for today. So, I'm off to do yoga after a bottle of wine. This should be interesting.

I only rolled out of control once, ok, twice. But, I did not fall on my face.

Now, it's bedtime!

DG, I don't get the cost saving measure. When companies have a shut down, allowing vaca pay is counter intuitive to saving money. Usually furloughs are done one or two days a month and people aren't allowed to use vaca pay. Good you can, but the company isn't going to save money if they are paying out vaca pay.

BTW that sucks. Try to change your vaca time, maybe it is still early enough for your family to adjust their plans too.

It's saving money on non paytroll operating costs. I have seen our electric bill (for example), a one week total shut down will make an impact.

And if you are forced to use your vacation time, that means that people won't be off as much when the company is actually operating.  You might want to check with the labor board about them making you use your vacation for a shutdown.  My mother's factory shuts down occasionally for new machine installs and such and all the employees go on temporary layoff and actually receive unemployment those couple of weeks.  It's so big that the unemployment office comes to them for all the paperwork processing.

Unemployment has a one week waiting period, so we wouldn't qualify for that on this short of a shut down. There have been talks of an actual layoff, so in comparison, this isn't so bad.

If I didn't already have a vacation planned, I would be all for this. I really don't get to use much vacation time due to the volume of my work and how needy my boss is. So making me take a week off? Sure. Heck, I carried over 5 days into 2016 I didn't get to use last year because I just didn't have time to take them.
