Wisconsin high schoolers banned from chants including ‘Airball’ and ‘Scoreboard’

 January 12

You’re at a basketball game, any basketball game, when a visiting player takes a shot that misses everything. How does the crowd react? Why, with a chant of “Air-ball! Air-ball!” of course.

Except at Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association games, as of this season. Students are banned from making that chant, as well as others that, the high school athletics body wrote, “are clearly intended to taunt or disrespect.”

Other phrases on the do-not-chant list include:

  • “Scoreboard”
  • “You can’t do that”
  • “Fundamentals”
  • “There’s a net there”
  • “Sieve”
  • “We can’t hear you”
  • “Season’s over”

This news came to light following the suspension of a star basketball player in that league. April Gehl of Hilbert (Wisc.) High  received a five-game suspension for a tweet which included profanity in expressing dismay at the WIAA’s new restrictions.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Gehl said of her suspension to the Appleton (Wisc.) Post-Crescent. “I was like, ‘Really? For tweeting my opinion?’ I thought it was ridiculous.”

An email sent by the WIAA in December included these comments:

“As we reviewed the fall tournaments and the sportsmanship evaluations and observations, we want to address concerns with a noticeable increase in the amount of chants by student sections directed at opponents and/or opponents’ supporters that are clearly intended to taunt or disrespect.

“Not wanting to restrict creativity or enjoyment, an enthusiastic and boisterous display of support for a school’s team is welcomed and encouraged at interscholastic events when directed in a positive manner. However, any action directed at opposing teams or their spectators with the intent to taunt, disrespect, distract or entice an unsporting behavior in response in not acceptable sportsmanship. Student groups, school administrators and event managers should take immediate steps to correct this unsporting behavior.”

The WIAA may have an uphill battle on its hands in eliminating chants such as “Air-ball!” and “Scoreboard!” Fans — of all ages — at basketball games have been yelling stuff like that at opposing players for a lot longer than since the fall, with those players mostly surviving the experience.

DD graduated high school in 2009 and had the same rules as my dad who graduated from the same high school in the 60's. That rule was "For <name of high school>, against no one". They were only allowed to cheer FOR their players but not against any other players/school. That rule had been around when my dad went there. This is nothing new.

How on earth do they plan to enforce this?

At DD's school, the principal went to every game. If a cheer started that she thought was "against" the other team, she walked over to the student body and shook her head and they stopped. Once she removed a student from the game from continuing to to cheer inappropriate things. It really was never much of an issue.

Well, the PIAA rules regarding the game here don't prevent fans from cheering or jeering.  What they cannot do is single out an individual player and make fun of him/her.  But, chanting "Air Ball" or "you can't do that" when they foul is a common chant.  And, what is wrong with 'you can't do that"?   It's a foul.  You actually can't do that.  But don't ever underestimate the nonstop nonsense of the Language Police in silencing everybody except for their own words and agenda.

Oh, man. There is a boys only HS here that is great in all sports. The students support wildly and their chants are great. I've seen kazoo bands, kids all dressed up in Santa outfits. Sometimes they are better than the game. The Dean of Disipline is at the games and will grab a real rowdy one but they always stay in check. The kid back flipping across the floor in a Barney costume was awesome!

Our kids aren't allowed to do much of anything. Certainly no back flipping. I mean, somebody might get hurt since they aren't wrapped in bubble wrap. Our home gym is like watching a basketball game in a morgue due to our No Fun Athletic Director. We have much more fun at away games.

You would love these guys!  The kid dressed as Fred Flintstone was a riot.  One kid gets the costume and leads the chants.  They are D1  everyone hates them.  Seeing my brothers and nephew all played on these teams I have had years of laughter.

My nephew wasn't playing much and the coach put him in.  The chanting for him was a riot.  He was on the floor laughing.

It's harmless fun.  We have to ruin the fun of kids all the time.  Let them cheer, jeer, etc.  Yes ,they can do those things in a respectful way.

Did you ever play any sports flan? Those of us who did know it is all part of the game and part of the fun of the game. When you team is doing well you get to cheer and jeer at the other team. When your team isn't doing well, it's their turn to jeer at you. It's only a big deal to wussy arsed thin skinned people who think the world is supposed to revolve around them.

There seem to be more and more people who cannot understand COMPETITION. And, the thrills and spills of great competition and the joys and pains of athleticism. Too bad.

Agreed.  We talk about it all the time.  I was just laughing the other day how EVERYONE gets a trophy.  Really?  You came in last place.  Own it.

Even when they were little, my boys KNEW which teams won & which teams lost. Trophies usually went straight in the trash. They didn't care about them.

Actually it was tons of fun. They had more spirit and participation from the student body than any other school they played. The kids cheered constantly and dressed up in funny outfits. They created the best atmosphere. People didn't want to play there because the student section was so loud. They just didn't cheer against the other team. They cheered FOR their peers. And like I said, that wasn't anything new. It had been the school's rule since at least the 60's and probably before.

It's gotten to the point that even my boys get upset when I tease them. They are taught at school that everything is inappropriate. At home, I tell them to get over it.

I am so very glad my kids are all almost out of school.

Caitlyn and Jesse say now that they will never send their kids to public school if they can avoid it at all.

Aaron says he isn't having kids.

What's going to happen when these coddled and cuddled kids get told their work is not up to par? When a manager or leader tells them their presentation is bad or something like that?

Raising a generation of kids who never have any negativity in their lives is setting them up for disaster.

So it's ok to call the opposing team names and be negative but it isn't ok to say your aunt Sally is mean for asking your other cousin to be in the wedding?!?! Please explain the logic in this. You said yourself that it isn't right to lower yourself to their level and say rude things about other just because they may have wronged you. How is it suddenly ok to do so when all they did was show up in the wrong team colors?

Those were your words on the other thread. Now you are saying it's ok to be negative. I am confused.

OMG! I actually had an employee do that!

She was showing up late, slacking in her duties and would always disappear when we got a rush.

So. I did my job.

I gave the required warnings complete with action plans to avoiding infractions in the future.

I would get phone calls from her mom and dad wanting to discuss the situations.

I didn't have to consider anything they said. It had no bearing at all.

So, she came in late for the third time and I sent her home.

Her dad calls, "why did you send her home".

I say, "ask her".

They show up at work with a "gift" for me.

It was a stupid stuffed dog.

Anyway.

I decline the gift.

They ask if we could talk about it.

I said there was nothing to talk about.

I stood there while they pleaded their case.

I then said I was following policy by sending her home. That their actions warranted dismissal.

"But, but... we're just trying to make her happy"

I know the look on my face was priceless because you could on theirs that they knew I was done.

"And I have a job to to do, goodbye"

And you think telling a 4 year their new aunt is mean is the same as saying "nice shot" to a player who misses the basket?

That's just special, Lily. Those parents aren't doing her any favors but you know that.

I've only ever had a relative call out for me once. I had severe tonsillitis and my throat was so swollen, it was hard for people to understand me. My aunt was the only one there at the time so I had her call out for me since I couldn't talk.

Thing is, she became a really good employee after that.

It's like she knew she was accountable for her actions.

I didn't mind the occasional parent calling out for a child.

I had two times when parents called to request time off for future events. Not a problem.

Saying someone's behavior is mean is not name calling.  It's a description of their behavior.  It is what it is.  And that little girl KNEW her aunt was being mean without being told.

So it's ok to tease and make fun of people, that doesn't bring you "down to their level" but name calling does?! Your ability to rationalize your actions is astounding. To say it's illogical would be an understatement.

Sure, sometimes lines are crossed--but this is patently ridiculous.

Schools have more to worry about than this nonsense.

You can send out your language Police but kids will figure out a way sound it. They can just yell "Great Shot" when someone shoots a brick or an airball. Do you think kids are stupide? The shooter knows if he/she shot a bad shot. So what? And jeering and bantering back and forth has always been part of sports. Liberals ruin and wussify everything they stick their claws in.

I don't think "liberals" is the right word here. Maybe "reactionaries"?

Pretty sure DD's Catholic school wasn't run by liberals. Lol. And it certainly is not a modern problem since the same rules were in effect in the 60's.

I don't know what airbags is.

I do know that during band competitions, the smack talk was part of the fun.

Weight lifting, football, baseball, heck, even drama had smack talk.

The chess team would smack talk each other.

Is anyone saying that kids should curse, threaten or do rhings like that? No. But competition can involve some fun and smack talk. If you dont like it then dont play sports.

There is a difference.

If you can't recognize the difference, well, I feel sorry for you. And for your kids.

 Well, bless your heart.

The rest of us can certainly recognize the difference.

 "Liberals" is her favorite insult.

I ignore it, most of the time.
