Um, there are already more than 300 MILLION guns in circulation. If you don't put the tech into the ammo, it will have almost no effect.

Good point. But that doesn't require the DNA tech to be in the ammo. I just requires all new ammo to have something in common with the new guns. Maybe an off-center hammer pin. Current "rim fire" and "center fire" cartridges wouldn't work in the new guns, and the "off-center fire" wouldn't work in the old. Eventually all old ammo would either degrade due to age and be worthless or be used and the only things left would be the new, and roughly same cost, "off-center fire" ammo.
Once the technology was advanced enough and the price dropped as all new tech eventually does, some old guns that weren't originally DNA read/encode compatible could be retrofit with reasonably priced DNA readers and encoders, as well as the new "off-center fire" hammer, at owner expense so those guns would not have to be scrapped.

No way. guns can last virtually forever. The only reason they were replaced so rapidly in past decades was due to rapidly advancing technology--like going from a musket to a repeating rifle.
Todays guns will be around a LONG time.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I didn't say guns don't last for a long time. I said the ammo degrades or is used over time. I know guns last a long time, if they are maintained properly.

But if the new ammo won't work in the old guns, what difference does it make?
Also, unless it gets wet or something, ammo lasts a LONG time, too.

If the new ammo won't work in the old guns, people can buy the upgrade I mentioned. Then the new ammo will work in the old guns.
Yes, that "wet or something" is what will degrade the ammo. Most "bad guys" aren't really storing their ammo in humidity and temperature controlled containers, are they? Plus you don't touch on where I said "or is used". How long does used ammo last? I don't think it lasts any time at all. I think once it's used, that it's no longer new and usable.

No way. They are not going to make retro parts to fit EVERY gun ever manufactured so it can shoot some new ammo on the off chance that a gun could be used in a crime.
It's simply ridiculous--and, actually, doesn't promote safety, anyway. It would only help solve a FEW murders that go unsolved.

I never said it would promote safety. What it would do is promote accountability. And that increased accountability promotes some increased measure of safety. Maybe not much, but definitely some.

No way. Most people who commit murder think they aren't going to get caught. Laws and punishment are only a deterrent to law abiding citizens who wouldn't commit crimes, anyway.
We have accountability, already.
There is NO WAY you are going to retrofit 300 MILLION guns when only a few thousand will be used in crimes. I doubt it is even possible given that there are THOUSANDS of different makes, models, and companies (some of which would be long out of business). That is simply absurd, and even the nuts in our government would never pass anything so ridiculous.

Because there's no way to identify them with just a bullet. If their DNA code was on the bullet and they knew it, some would think about getting caught.

No way.
It would cost billions. I doubt if it is even possible to retrofit all existing guns even if we wanted to. It won't do squat.
