I'm a city person. I don't panic when it snows, I know how to drive on ice as well as fresh snow.
What a stupid meme.

Oh geez. They are losing their minds on the East Coast. Haven't you watched the news today? I can't believe it's even a big story.
Not the entire East Coast. Just the mid atlantic. The media is keeping it a big story even in my area. But in the defense of the people in the Mid Atlantic region they do not have the snow removal equipment we have. A friend of mine in Maryland post a pic of her street, they have 2 feet anyway and not once has a street plow been by. How is the plow when it does get to their street going to move that snow? And the wall it will build at the bottom of the driveways will be in heart attack territory for the home owners. Most of those people only have shovels. I really feel for them.

People here are not even THAT prepared.
Our county's winter weather plan is not to have winter weather.
Our sand and salt trucks are pick ups with sand in the bed and guys with shovels throwing it out.
My dad will clean as much as he can with the blade on his ditch witch.
So just the least bit of snow/ice here can shut everything down.

All right. The media has blown this way out of proportion. They have made this into a almost laughable situation.
On that note, while we here in the Mid-Atlantic are prepared for winter and snow, at least here in Philadelphia, the average snow storm that usually occurs is between 4-12 inches, not 18-30", especially in a 24 hour period with winds gusting up to 60 mph which threatens the power lines. I am not panicking but I made sure I was prepared. Will I drive in this? No. Can I drive in it? Yes but there are too many others who don't so I won't put myself at risk.
Am I laughing at those who need to go buy milk, bread and a new snow shovel for every storm we have? Yes.
On a more serious note, Part of the Jersey shore are having severe flooding issues, worse than when Superstorm Sandy hit in some areas. Yet at the same time, it is hard to feel sorry for the destruction when they built on a barrier island that consistently has issues with flooding and then expects the government to help them out every time.
Late afternoon, I shoved the storm door open and dug my way to the street. Just finished digging a path through the ice the plows had used to bury my driveway apron, when a neighbor stopped his truck, and asked if I'd like him to finish the job. (He does snow removal and landscaping/gardening for a living).
YES !!!!!
The storm is supposed to end by 5 a.m., he will be here at 5:30.
I've known his mother, aunt, and cousins (they all live 3 houses from me) for a very long time.
Price? $125 for this storm, or $600 for the year.
Which would you do? One time, or annual?
The path I'd shoveled was 15 to 1 inches deep, and the storm was (supposedly) half over.

I would pay the annual. But then, I hate shovelling. We can't hire a truck service the way our driveway is designed, it is too narrow, only 10.5' wide between the house and the fence.

None of the above. I would buy a snowblower and take care of it myself. At those prices you would pay yourself back in 2 years at the most.

On average, how often do you need this done?
What is more typical for your area, meaning do you have more smaller snows you can take care of or more big snows that is harder to do?
Which one can you afford?

Pay for the year. Its not worth risking your back or your heart - especially when trying to get rid of the hard-pack that the plows leave at the end of your driveway.
Be smart, and stay healthy.
Well, we got 26 inches and no plow in sight. Last time (2010) we got this much snow, we were trapped for 2 weeks. Why? Because every time a plow came, it broke down. Sorry VDOT, but a truck with a plow on the front is not going to cut it when you waited until all the snow had fallen. So they try something bigger. And that breaks down as soon as it reaches our development. Then another. And so it goes until they finally smarten up and get a backhoe. Combine snow with the fact that we live in a very hilly, mountainous area and there you have it. So you mid-westerners with your flat roads where you can see for miles and your big farm equipment that can move mountains, you are prepared. We're not. So around here, big snow storms are newsworthy. All because our Dept. of Transportation system lacks the brains to deal with this type of storm.

I know Indy sent volunteers east, but I forget which state they went to.
Flat roads help somewhat, except when there's blowing snow & no houses to serve as a windbreak. I've never seen farm equipment in the city, but if it gets really bad, they put plows on garbage trucks to help out.

Exactly. Snow in the Northeast! What an oddity! And, when did we start naming snow storms and declaring a "State of Emergency" before the storm even hits! It's freaking snow people. Wow.

They declare emergency so they can get funding for extra crews, equipment, and the National Guards. Who, by the way, were rescuing firetrucks and emergency vehicles. All because we simply don't have the equipment Buffalo has.
Snow is not an oddity. Snow in this quantity and time span is. Well, every 5 or so years anyway. You'd think they'd be better prepared, since it does happen. But I guess because it doesn't happen often enough, they can't justify the expense.
Then there's the disposal problem. Unlike rural areas, there is simply no place to put all this snow.

We received very little federal assistance for last year. I don't think not being prepared is an excuse to get more assistance than areas that are prepared when you (you in general of course) are in an area where snow is not uncommon. If you have railroad tracks, they can do snow trains. They are no more than huge dumpsters they replace train cars with and as they go through towns, the towns can dump snow in them to help clear it all out.

Well, it is YOUR responsibility of your state and local govt to be prepared. It SNOWS here. Deal with it. That means having road salt and plows available. I never had any problem whatsoever getting around in Buffalo because they prepared and dealt with it. They took good care of their roads and it was not an issue. This is just a whole lot of whining on the part of officials who lack the forethought to be prepared. And, our winters have been very mild over the last decades. SO, there is no excuse to not have adequate funds and equipment to deal with a few storms here and there.

This reminds me of when we first moved to our house. We had "record-breaking" rains. Our basement flooded. I told DH, "we need to get a gravity drain in the window well." He replied, "this was a once in a century storm. Won't happen again." Six months later, we had a lot of snow, followed by rain. Our basement flooded. Again, "record breaking snow following rain. Won't happen for another 100 years." Then, another "record breaking" storm. How many friggin "record breaking" storms do we need before you realize we need a frickin drain!" Finally just went ahead and took care of it myself.
This is the mindset of the state and local governments as well.
I'm snowed in. I live in VA we never get this kind of snow, or rarely. The freeking wind blew all the snow into a drift against my sliding glass door & it is waist high. I am not exagerating. The front porch only has about a foot I think.
And my cat is out somewhere in all this snow. I am very worried about her.

I'm totally over it already.
I'm so sorry about your cat. Hopefully she found someplace warm & is sleeping now.

Thanks Flan. I called her & called her Friday night. I'm hoping she holed up somewhere but if she did it will be a long time before she can make it home as deep as the snow is.

Texans panic when it comes to snow. I'll be the first one to admit it. A few flakes of snow and people here are like, "OMG down to the panic room!"

Being a Californian, I'm not thrilled with the idea of having to drive in it. So I make sure I have what I need to last a few days, and try to re-arrange my schedule so I can stay home.
