My question is, if this were 6 black students doing this, would anything have been said or done?

THAT'S your question in response to this abhorrent behaviour?
Yes. That's my question.
I want to know if the reaction and discipline would be the same.
I'm one of those who are sick of the double standard.

We had a kid use the N word on social media, wearing a school uniform. He was expelled. If he hadn't had on the school uniform he would have just been suspended.

See, I don't think the schools should be the PC police on social media.

The kids were at school, using shirts from another school photo shot. That matters. Plus, it was just plain stupid, and kids needs consequences to learn not to be stupid.

Using the SAME word? Absolutely the same punishment.
flan
LO. No. That's completely not true. That word has a double standard, and you know it.
But calling for expulsion over it is dumb, because then you've turned the school into the word police, and they will then have to expel anyone who uses a racial slur. And there are a lot of them.

Dumb. They didn't even spell it right, leaving out the g's. But the implication was there, so suspend them.
When should a child's personal life spill over onto the school's, making it the school's responsibility to act? What line does/should one draw?
Speech is protected. Unless likely to incite IMMEDIATE violence. Did this do this? Was them standing together like this to pose a photo done in public? In front of blacks? Or was it on a weekend with no one around but the photographer. And where was the photo disseminated?

They were apparently just smart enough to think that might "excuse" what they did...
Actions have consequences. The students need to learn that, if they haven't already.

I don't care if rappers use it, these are high-school students.
Kids do dumb things. I could see myself doing something similar in my youth, although it would not have been a racial slur, it would be some sort of profanity, thinking it was funny. And I would have received just punishment, although the "damage" would not have been as great, because the dissemination would have been minor, back in the pre-internet days. Probably a day's suspension, and a verbal "talk to" by my parents. Not a public stoning.
I think people are making more out of this than is necessary.

And this is part of the reason why racism is alive & well here.
No, it's making a big deal and giving it media attention that is creating the racism. Deal with them, quietly, and stop trying to incite anger by publicly flogging.

Yes, they are. TEENAGERS. They are still learning and part of the process includes mistakes. A mistake such as this should not haunt them forever with a school expulsion.

Until black people stop using this word amongst themselves they really can't blame others when they continue to use it. If it's racist for a white person to say it then it's racist when a black person says it. I don't understand the double standard for this word and saying it's because they're black and it's ok to call themselves that is just stupid. If you want this word to go away then STOP using it like a nickname for each other.

I think a 5 day suspension is appropriate. I can't believe people want them expelled. It was a stupid stupid thing to do. But they are teenagers who do stupid things. And while this was hurtful and idiotic it was not on par with messing up their future over. Plus they are getting a hefty dose of internet infamy. I think the lesson will be well learned.
This: "Seniors at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Arizona, were wearing shirts to spell out 'BEST*YOU'VE*EVER*SEEN*CLASS*OF*2016' for a senior class yearbook photo, school district officials said." makes me wonder if the girls posed for the offensive pic without even thinking their shirts are spelling out something rude.
A teenager is plenty old enough to know that the "N" word is racist & unacceptable (in a school or work setting).
flan
So shoot them. Destroy their lives. Tar and feather them.
Exactly what do you think should happen beyond what did?
Not knowing the girls' intent, I feel the punishment is appropriate. However, these girls are seniors. About to enter the world as adults. They're not just teenagers. If a soon-to-be adult doesn't understand that racial slurs are unacceptable, that speaks volumes about the state of the world in which we live.
I know it doesn't make it much better, but it's not like they made the shirts with the intent of spelling that word. It looks to me like this was the only bad word they could make with the letters available. Or maybe that group of them were friends and realized by mistake the letters their shirts spelled out and decided to take a picture. (Still stupid, but hardly hateful).
I got the impression these girls left the area and posed for their own picture, spelling the "racial slur". Personally, with this word being used so much in the black community, I downgrade the word from a slur to profanity. So while I would not use it, and would cringe if I ever heard it, I don't think it's as bad as people say. But I don't get offended by whitie, gringo, cracker, etc.
If the parents saw the picture, they would handle it.
I'm am so very thankful social media wasn't around when I was doing stupid stuff.

Yeah, black rappers who use the word who target their music to high schoolers. So, don't whine, whine, whine if you won't even police yourselves. Yes, it's not a nice word. I think 5 days is an acceptable punishment.
They were dumb kids but they don't deserve their lives ruined.
