Yes.  Every time I talk about other boards, like the step mom board or the local FB mom board, I'm told if there's drama there I shouldn't be hanging out on it.  That if it were up to THEM they wouldn't hang out on a board with people like THAT.  Problem is there's drama everywhere.  And good too!  You always have to take the good with the bad.

There's a lot of drama on this board. But a lot of good. And some good drama. It's all good, IMO.

Goodness. Today has been a real struggle. Every single joint hurts. Even my jaw.

And I can not get warm.

DH took him. The roads in/out of our development are passable, but I panic trying to drive on snowy/icy roads.

I don't blame you. I don't go out if I don't have to in bad weather/conditions.

Anyone have a good home remedy for burns? I just scorched my hand on the oven and it's a bad one. Let's just say I could rob a bank with that hand now because my fingerprints won't be searchable.

I would run it under cool water, not ice cold.

Take a couple of Advil.

And, keep an eye on it.

Ouch, I'm sorry you got hurt, MM.cry

Thanks. I ran it under the water as soon as I did it. Then I went and did a few things in the kitchen while I muttered curse words under my breath. Then I took a look at it and ran it under the water again. Still hurts. 😰

Luckily I have some pain meds from DD's oral surgery hidden away. I might take one before bed.

Once you have finished dinner, make a bowl of cool water to soak it in, for a little while.

Throw a few ice cubes in a bowl, and fill it with cool water.

It sounds like you burned your fingertips, MM.

Take something for the pain. (It sounds like you have something a little better than Advil.wink)

And, keep those burned fingers cool.

That is my best home remedy.

I hope you feel better soon.

Do you have an aloe plant?

That stuff is amazing for burns.

Home remedy? Not really.

I've heard of putting real butter on it.

Or mustard.

But I found if you don't have suflersilverdine(?) Preparation H works.

It numbs it.

I know what we use to do when I was working with hot melt in the sample company or hot oil in the restaurant.

Water just warm enough to open the pores so the heat could get out.

Hot melt, if you let it be for just a few seconds, it wasn't so bad.

But if you went with your knee jerk reaction to rub it off, lots of time you took skin with it.

COLD water. The burn continues to escalate, and you need cold water to stop it.

Well. I know what has worked in my life of getting burned. And in my jobs it was an almost daily occurrence.

Not freezing cold water. The burn CONTINUES TO BURN, cells continue to die, and you don't put warm water on it.

I don't care if a poultice of cow manure worked for you. I'm giving my professional medical advice.

No butter, ever. No mustard or ketchup or other condiments. No warm water.

If the skin isn't broken or blistered, nothing works better than aloe vera.

Every home should have a fresh aloe plant for kitchen burns, sunburns, etc.

The freshly-extracted gel works much better than the commercial preparations. It's a small investment, about $5.

The older the plant, the stronger the gel.

Mistake: Putting butter on a burn.

You've probably heard the tip to put butter on a burn, but bear in mind that it's bad advice: Any greasy substance on a burn keeps heat in and could make it hard for a burn to heal or be properly treated.

What to do: Run cold water over the burn to ease the pain. Then gently dry the area and keep it loosely covered. If it starts to blister, becomes discolored, or seems infected, get medical treatment.

I've always heard cool, not cold, water. Cool water allows the burn to release the heat. Ice cold water just shocks it into "hibernation" so to speak. When it starts to come back to room temperature it will release the heat.

An egg white will trap the heat. You want to release it.

Never tried out the theory.  Always went with the tried and true cool water theory.

Hmmm. Will have to read that sometime. I've always known to put cool water on a burn. When my sister was about 18 months old my mom was bathing her in the kitchen sink. We had one of those one bar handles that you slid to the hot side for hot water and the cold side for cold water. Up for on and down for off. No knobs. My mom turned around for a minute and my sister was playing and hit the hot water. The scalding water went down her arm, side, and abdomen. My mom immediately put cool water on her and took her to the ER. She had second degree burns. They said she would have probably ended up with serious skin issues if my mom hadn't done the right thing.

I put it under cold water, but for burns that continue 'burning' when dry I took one of those cold fever patches they market for kids (they are cool and stick to skin) and put it on the burn to keep it comfortable.

We had a resident who was boiling water for tea and upended the kettle on his lap. He had very serious burns.
Took forever to heal.
The docs on our floor were really upset because they weren't allowed to use aloe on him. It's unregulated, we don't know the strength or dosage, yadda, yadda.
They said he would have healed much faster with it. They use it themselves at home.

It even works for chemical and radiation burns.

It's a miracle plant.

ITA.  I like my step mom board because sometimes I can go there and ask questions specific to step parenting.  I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way but step parenting is just a lot different than regular parenting.  Different challenges and things to deal with.  Other step moms understand.  And sometimes I just like hearing I'm not the only one dealing with xyz issue.  KWIM?  They also have links to articles that have some good stuff in them sometimes.  And yes, sometimes I laugh at the craziness of it all.  I think on that page I see a lot of women who create their own thunderstorm and then cry when they get wet.  So honestly, I don't spend a lot of time there because it's hard for me to deal with those kinds of people.  On the local mom board I belong to it's nice because you can ask other people what they think of new restaurants, find doctors people like, or just generally get a lot of local information.  I'm not from this town originally so I don't know all the little hole in the walls like most do.  I think it's a really helpful place to go for information but some things there drive me absolutely nuts.  The biggest one being that people will post that their child's first birthday is in two days and they need a fancy three tiered cake baked for extra cheap.  I always wonder when those people "forgot" about the birthdays.

 Yes.

Which is why warm, not hot, but a little better than tepid works.

And about the butter.

When I was 2 I put my hand on a hot motorcycle muffler and burnt it really bad.

Mom grabbed a stick of butter and put it in my hand and off to the ER we went.

My hand never blistered, no scar.

Yes, I know first aid and I know that isn't recommended now.

But it worked then.

Sometimes those old wives tale remedies do work.

Ouch on the burn. I wouldn't continue making dinner, you have to immediately put it in water and let it site for a long time. I know it's past the point since this happened last night. I hope it isn't still hurting.

I did run it under cool water when it happened. When I finished dinner, I looked for the aloe gel but couldn't find it. I think it was old and I pitched it when we moved. I ended up just holding a cool wash rag all night and it worked really well. Not cold, no ice, just a cool cloth. I even took it to bed with me (and I took half a Vicodin before bed).

About the aloe plant - I am a notorious serial killer of plants. I am the Ted Bundy of botanicals. They come in the house healthy and within a week or 2...deader than dead. The only thing I can grow is kids.
