LOL!!! A "horrible " thing to point out that lots of people have jobs, kids, and houses, or that lots of people have lost someone close to them?

Those are called FACTS.

No, the ignorant "do you want a cookie" comment.  Rude beyond belief.

LOL!!!!  She wants recognition for doing what a hell of a lot of people do.

Bull, Husker.  You called people with depression WEAK.  She had every right to defend that.  She wasn't asking for a "participation trophy" - she was pointing out that your over generalization of people with a chemical imbalance as "weak" is stupid beyond measure.  Because even WITH depression, she was able to struggle through difficult times and do all that.

Yeah, and of course NOBODY else has ever done any of those things or experienced bad events.

Nobody said that.  But your generalizations that depressed people are nothing but weak is ****ty.

Then why bring up things that lots of people do and do well?

of course it's for recognition and validation.

Everyone howls about "better mental health car, better mental health care", but when push comes to shove, people want nothing to do with better mental health care.

Anyone else notice that we were all having a nice discussion until Husker popped in to hurl insults like a howler monkey throws its feces?

It seems that happens more often than not lately.

WTF are you babbling about?  Who is "all"?

I was the second person to comment on this thread.  Except for one other person and the OP, the "all" came into the discussion after I did.

I've known husker for a long time. I took his comment personally. Most of the time he doesn't bother me.

I'm curious as to who makes up the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. It seems every time I see my doctor, recommendations for preventative care changes. Kind of like the food pyramid and what is considered healthy. Now they want to screen for depression? Sounds like another way for doctors and pharmacists to make a buck off the insurance companies.

Yes, I do.  Because sometimes people are so heartless and non compassionate, sometimes they are so freaking hateful, that they will never understand until they have to go through something themselves.

It reminds me of rich people who look down on homeless people and sneer and make fun of them.  When in reality a lot of "rich" people are only one job loss, one devastating illness, one serious anything away from homelessness themselves.

I went down that road, wished bad on someone.

All it did was grow hate in my heart and eventually made me extremely sick.

I will NEVER again wish ill will on another.

I don't hate anybody--but others have sure directed a lot towards me.

Don't really care that much, but it's laughably hypocritical to preach about "hate"--and then wish bad things to happen to someone.

On the cobtrary husker. Flan shows she is a strong person who pressed on. However she recognizes that people have low points that as well.

Some think " strength" means never having been weak. However true strength is born out of perseverance and weakness .

Some people lack empathy and sympathy. Some people think that humans are machines and having to deal with emotions and chemical imbalances just need a "cheer up, buddy and put on a happy face". Some people think that all humans should react the same way, which is usually the way they do. To some people, it is just a headache. To others, it is a migraine.

Thankfully, not everyone thinks or feels this way.

That is what makes humans unique. Not everyone acts or reacts the same way.

Going into the psychiatric world for my next career, I have learned to accept that there are people who will pick and choose what "modern medicine" they will accept and approve of. They cannot open their minds that there is more than one way to deal with an issue. They down-play and attack what they cannot accept.

Mental illness is a "cancer". There are many different ways to diagnose and treat it. There is no wrong way, there is no right way, there is only the way that works for that person. And it is different for everyone.

That's actually really sh!tty.  Who knew?

 Yeah, it is.

To be clear. Telling your intimate feelings on a message board leaves you open to gossip. Even when you think people will be helpful and your friend. People pretend they're your friend all the time while they find a way change whether they are from from day to day. Remember that when you tell things to people who really don't care if they hurt your very special feelings because they usually don't really care unless it is in their favor.

I would tend to agree, MM.

Weak people don't survive.  Strong people survive, whether they're depressed, physically handicapped, developmentally disabled...

I also have survived and don't feel a need to argue about it.  The fact that I'm still here speaks volumes, and calling me weak is a demonstration of the ignorance that sadly promotes the stigma attached to depression.

My issue is that everyone has low points. Everyone, or most everyone "presses on" when something bad happens.

Actually the more I think about it I don't wish that someone husker knows would suffer from depression. If one of huskers family members became clinically depressed he'd just yell at them that they were weak and that they just needed to STFU and get over it. And I wouldn't wish THAT on anyone.

Except the ones that don't...and there are PLENTY that need help & don't get it.

And some low points are lower than others. I grew up with 2 parents in the house. The first death I can remember was my maternal grandfather when I was in college.
