Sooo, just change the date you go to Europe.

Call your buddy that is making the itinerary, and explain the situation. Either you guys can still go together on a different date, or you and your wife go before or after and just overlap one end, or you take entirely different times.
Either way, not the end of the world.

 We can change--our friends can't.

Then you won't get to go together. Unfortunate, but Europe will still be loads of fun.

And that's probably the answer--but im still going to be mad and pout.

And he admits to pouting, LOL!  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Real men DO pout, but they rarely admit it.

I can pout and sulk like none other.

So many possible responses...and all of them SO wrong!

But YOU are actually contemplating about not going, or you wouldn't have to "decide". It shouldn't matter what your friends are doing or not doing, have scheduled or not scheduled.

You are the biggest hypicrite of them all.

I'm not sure it's hypocrisy as much as I don't think he expected himself to be in such a situation with his family.

And that is why you don't issue ultimatums. When you say things like "I would never miss a family wedding for ANY reason and to do so otherwise is stupid." puts you in a bad situation when you find yourself contemplating missing a family wedding. You have set yourself up for those comments.

Yes, but he didn't have to share this predicament with us. I like to cut some slack, especially when they find themselves in a conundrum they didn't see coming. And as much as it pains him, I suspect he will chose family first.

I'm sure the mom of the little girl who got cut out of the wedding didn't see that coming either.

I'm sure she didn't. And I recommended boycotting the wedding. But in this case, since travel plans have not been carved in stone or even reserved, I think he can change his plans.

Well, to be fair, I never said "any" reason--I just didn't think the situation on the other thread was much of a reason.

Maybe this isn't, either, except we've been planning it long before any talk of a wedding came up. The only reason it's even in question is that we don't have four or five grand invested in airline tickets, train tickets, and VRBO deposits.

My problem is the "you don't skip a family wedding for any reason" argument. It's either sacred or it isn't. And you put forth the argument that it is. So, EVEN IF you had booked your trip, you should still cancel it and go to the wedding.

If you are planning on going to Europe this August...it might already be too late to book flights and VRBO's. Seriously?! We book a year out. Minimum.

Depending on where you want to go and what your budget is, you might not have much of a choice as to accommodations.

And your friends have plenty of time to get their passports. They can pay extra for expedition processing and get it in less than 6 weeks.

I can't believe you actually thought L, M, and J would make the trip!
ROTF!!!
They do not talk about it at all. Should be a hint.
Go to the wedding, forget the trip.
Plan a trip next year with E and C, they would be on the ball. They already have their passports.

I totally forgot. You know everything.

Depending on where you want to go and what your budget is, it could absolutely be too late to book your preferred accommodations for the exact week you want to go. The VRBO we booked for Ireland had to be booked a year in advance because it was so popular. The flights we took to Paris a few years back sold out within a few weeks of being listed on the airlines' website. Trust me, it could be rough for you depending on where you want to go and what your budget is. August is only 7 months away and its peak travel season. It's also during European holiday so a lot of what you want to see might not even be open. But again...you knew that.

 No, it isn't.

I check flights every week.  There are plenty--and they've gotten $300-400 cheaper over the last 3 or 4 months depending on the airline and where we'd fly out of.

For the one city we want to stay in, there are 247 VRBO's available for our dates, for another city, there are 180, and that was as of 2 minutes ago after I read your ridiculous post.

But--if I'm not going, anyway, it doesn't make a bit of difference now, does it?

When we went to Europe we got our tickets about six weeks before we left. We didn't have a problem and there were 14 of us on that trip.

www.cheapair.com/blog/travel-tips/how-far-in-advance-should-you-book-an-international-flight/

This website says the cheapest flights for a summer European trip are available 11 months before the flight and only get MORE expensive as the time gets closer.

But I am sure you know more than the experts and I (who has significant European travel planning experience) do. Without a doubt.

It's like talking to a brick wall.

You got very very very lucky. Did you travel in an off season or to a country that isn't a hot destination? Because literally every decent travel planning guide, and travel agent, and the airlines will tell you that is next to impossible and NOT advisable.

 Oh brother.

When I stared looking for flights last Sept/Oct--they were over $1,900 out of Omaha.

Now, they are down to $1,500-1,600.

Tell me how is that "cheaper"?

We went to Germany in November. We didn't use an agent either. We didn't need hotel rooms though. We stayed with the families of the kids we had hosted

If your brother knew you were going to be gone, he shouldn't have scheduled his wedding during that time if he wanted you to be there. If he had a reason for wanting that particular wedding date, you need to decide what's more important in the long run - the wedding or the trip to Europe.

What's a VRBO?

Yeah, anyone that you've planned a big trip with that isn't doing a thing about moving toward the vacation don't really want to go. They just arent' into it.  Find another couple that do want to go.  And plan it so you around for the current date of the wedding.

But a trip that you haven't even committed to, bought a flight for, or made reservations for?  That's no reason at all.

I don't see what the big deal is? A wedding is one day. You haven't made plans and paid for it, so what is so hard about going the day after or whatever? Or, here's a thought, go talk to your brother.

Or, better yet, write to Dear Prudie.

Ooooh! I just encountered that term this week. The company rents condos and /or private homes, among other things.

Isn't that the truth.  If I had the time and extra resource, there are many places world-wide I would love to experience.  But I'd definitely tour the USA first - we have so much to see here.  Not putting your European trip down, Husker.  I hope your friends and family can get their acts together so the trip isn't ruined for you and Mrs. Husker.

No.  My buddy from Lincoln is supposed to be calling me to let me know if there is any flexibility on dates, or if he is still even going to go.  His daughter has pneumonia, so he doesn't want to stress his wife any more right now.

I'm assuming the trip is off.  We probably won't even go, at all.
