There was a letter in the mail today addressed to DH from State Farm. I usually throw these out as they are usually trying to get us to switch back to SF. DH and his parents had them for years until I shopped around.
For some reason, I opened the envelope. At first, I thought it may be a scam but I know there is a SF Bank. I googled SF Bank and the info matched the letter. So I called and confirmed it is real but DH needed to be the one to call.
We are not quite sure of what it is from but the letter is legitimate and we are getting enough money that we can either go on a short vacation or get the shed we have been looking at. We think that FIL may have opened a CD in DHs name years ago. FIL has been gone since 2007 so there is no way to ask him. I know that he and MIL had some CDs with SFB so that makes the most sense.
Make sure you are talking to a legitimate representative of State Farm.
Don't give any personal information, over the phone.
I would ask them, to send you the claim forms, in the mail.
(but, I'm old fashioned, that way.)
I hope it all works out!
I know if any of our Good Geeks, who might have better advice, will chime in!
Just don't give banking info. I am perplexed because after 5 years of inactivity in an account, the money is supposed to be turned over to the State. And you have to go to the state to get the money. Could be they had to turn it over but are going to push for JLBEAR to buy other products with the money.

No push for anything. I researched before calling. We gave very little info but verified what they had. DH did not even give any nor SSN. They are sending certified check. Yes, it was at the point of turning it over to the state but they did try to find us. I will confirm with MIL tomorrow but feel confident this was not a scam. I searched and called the number on the web which did match the letter. I also used my financial connections to confirm since I am in the insurance industry.
Good for you. And, for the rest of us, it only takes a few seconds to open mail (even if we think it is junk, ads, etc.) and you never know what you will find inside. Worth the time. A few years ago some Visa accounts were compromised here in Japan and Visa caught it, reissued the cards and send everyone (in a separate mailing) a $100.00 gift certificate as a way to say "sorry". One of our friends just tossed it out, thinking it was just an ad.... So...

Nice!

LOL. When my husband was on the phone with the cable company for over an hour trying to get the boxes to sync up, I came in and asked who he was talking to, the guy heard me, so I told DH to ask him what he was wearing. He cracked up. That's become a household joke now. Like, "can you hear me now?" and "where's the beef?"
