Clearly, the point flew right over your head. At warp speed.

 No, no, no.

I'm talking about the "you buy your kid a fancy bike" and "how do you take so many trips" type comments you make.

But I've come to expect the sideways comments.

I just consider the source.

 Nah.

It's more about saving for trips, gifts, eating out.

I save my change.

It adds up.

That's one way we can go and do things other than just getting by.

I've only had this happen the other way - for example, the waitress give me $4 and short herself the 32 cents.

Okay Lily, I thought about this.  I'm calling you on this.  You say you never start trouble, you never stir the pot, and you never attack anyone.  You say you are always innocent in it.  It is comments like these that stir the pot.  You are not innocent.  You take just as many jabs on this board as does anyone else.

Exactly.  I've never had it happen to me but I have had friends where the wait staff just took their tip off when they rang up the bill on their card.  Again, you don't get to decide what tip you get, if any.  It's not your money until I give it to you.

Evidently, if you want your change, you can't afford to be eating in a restaurant.

Yup.  Not saying they should shortchange you--but really.

If the meal was .68 more expensive are you saying you wouldn't order it based on that?

-- Edited by huskerbb on Saturday 30th of January 2016 02:46:26 PM

Unsurprisingly you are missing the point. It isn't about if I will go broke from not getting my change. It's about the server taking something that doesn't belong to them. The change isn't theirs to take. It belongs to me and if I want you to have it I will give it to you. Taking something without asking, regardless of how small that thing is, is theft.

BS.  I didn't miss the point at all--flan directly stated that she wasn't "rich" and needed her change.  Therefore, it is apparently about going broke from not getting her change.  Try to follow the thread.

It isn't about going broke from not getting the change. 68 cents isn't going to send flan to skid row. It's about being careful with your money and knowing what you spend and where it is instead of letting it rain change just because you are too lazy to say something.

What about "gratuity added to total"?  It's on a management-level instead of server-level, but isn't it much the same thing?  Your right to give or withhold your own money is taken away.

If a waitress has to pocket the coins from each check maybe SHE can't afford to work in that restaurant! Go work someplace more expensive which will net larger tips.

It depends.  Here, not sure how it is at other places, if your party is over 20 people they automatically take a tip out.  Otherwise, you get to decide.  Or should.

I know which restaurants have a "gratuitity added to total."  It's my choice to eat there.

Quite different from waters pocketing my change on top of their tip.

I tip better than the standard "gratuity added". But if they want to add 15% that's what they get instead.

Yep, we threw a party a steak house once.  There were about 25 people there.  They added in the gratuity.  We always pay more but we didn't then.

Really?  I don't know anyone who eats out that often that is broke.  The only people that I know that eat out that much have the money for it.  But yes, I've been "forced", not really forced but you get tired of people bugging the crap out of you, to go out to dinner when you can't really afford it.  Eventually you give in.  So while you have plenty of money to give away others might not.

 Obviously, Flan does and is...

That's kind of taking a little shot at flan but oh well.  Lily says she's stingy and wants her change back.  Why don't you chastise her?  I have money when I go out to eat but it's MY DAMN MONEY.  You don't get to make the decision to keep it or not keep it.  And I don't really care if flan goes out to eat.  This is something that bugs me.  People will judge someone and say they spend too much money on xyz.  We all have things we spend too much money on.  Some people buy hundreds of pairs of shoes.  I go to Starbucks.  I don't have to go to Starbucks and it would save money if I didn't but I go.  We all use our discretionary income in our own way.

And using your own theory if you are willing to give away $7 a week on eating out where else are you willing to give away money on?  I've found that people who willingly leave money behind leave hundreds of dollars behind at the end of the year.  It's not JUST eating out.  It's leaving your change when you get coffee or leaving your change when you go to the dry cleaners.  It adds up.  It's a mentality that people have.  Most people want to account for their money.  Some don't care.

I ALWAYS leave the coins. Every single time. At Starbucks, at the gas station, hell, even in vending machines.

 I don't like that either.

But I know it is.

1. Because, again, people can't do simple math.

2. To make sure it is counted toward the servers pay.

O4 most definitely stated she can't be bothered to carry coins around.

We're not allowed to say anything? What WILL she do if she buys something for 39 cents and gives the merchant a five dollar bill in Canada?

Leave behind over $4, because it's all in change? I have every right to ask.

I don't have a problem with 'gratuity added' because I understand why it's done. Larger parties take more time and the server can't flip the table as often. Ideally, everyone would properly tip on their portion of the bill but that doesn't happen. Everyone thinks everyone else is going to tip and they cheap out. Sometimes, if one person is paying the bill, they don't tip properly either so the server sometimes ends up working for free after tip out (i.e. their tip out is more than the tip they received).

I realize that it's the server's choice to have that job but I don't believe a person should ever have to pay to be at work.

Its not as much meanness as much as it seems to be jealousy.

Oh no honey.  There's nothing in your life I'm jealous of.  Except maybe that you have grand kids but, given time, so will I so no, it's definitely not jealousy.  I can say that for sure.

Where we go in Canada, there are no vending machines, Starbucks, and i dont go to the gas station. We're in the middle of nowhere. If we needs something, he makes the trek. I sit on the deck...

Interesting you used the word "Honey" when it's a name you have not used here.  You used it to offend, show your obnoxiousness, and to be snotty.  Like a troll would!

Call me all the names that you wish.  Does not bother me.  Feel free.

Not nearly as snotty and obnoxious as saying if you can't afford to leave behind all your change, you shouldn't be going out to eat.

IMHO, there's a huge difference between choosing to leave behind change (or all your change) vs. someone else making that decision FOR YOU.

The first one is giving a gift, the second one is being robbed.
