For wait staff to take LIBERTIES with MY money, whether I am a pauper or a millionaire is presumptous, rude and theft. Period. Not sure what is so hard to understand about that?
I can afford to eat out. I want correct change unless I instruct otherwise.
But you also think it is fine to booze up on someone elses dime.
WTF are you babbling about? Every time I bring up a cash bar at a wedding, everyone says that's not cool. So, obviously, I'm "cool" with paying for my own booze--everyone else wants it to be on someone else's dime.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
This was the quote that started it all. She NEVER said she couldn't afford it. Not once. She said she needs her change back. Maybe she needed the change for something else that very day. People are reading into this comment that she can't afford to eat out. She also didn't say that not getting the change back would make her bank account bounce. That's something everyone else has read into this. She simply said she needs her change back. MANY people are on budgets. And eating out can be one of those treats that you budget for too.

I think you're nuts.
Ok? Making a mistake on change and making a practice of it are 2 different things.

Being "not rich" assumes that she has to have the money--therefore, she can't really afford to go out if that .68 is going to make the difference.
Again, if the meal was .68 more expensive--would she decide not to get it? It's ridiculous.

And the math says if you give away sixty eight cents whenever at the end of the month you've lost seven dollars. So that change someone wants or needs? It can pay for the next meal out.

Who are you to say who eats out? If you pay your bill and tip then why is that your business or anyone elses? No you dont get to short change me. That's absurd.
I didn't see anyone complaining about their money problems.

I wouldn't want to eat at an establishment that a meal only costs $7. :puking:
McDonald's is even more than that. The 7-11 is more than that.

McDonald's tacquito's are two for a buck. Their egg mcmuffin isn't that much either. Just a couple bucks. And, their egg mcmuffin was rated one of the healthiest fast food breakfast foods. DH and I got to Whataburger sometimes in the middle of the night. We can easily get three taciquito's for six dollars. There are many fast food places that have dollar menus. And there's a lot of restaurants now doing specials. Things like half a sandwich and soup. Depends on where you go. Of course if you go to a steak house you're going to spend a pretty penny. And it depends on if you eat in or take out. These places are making a killing on soda. The other day when DH and I went to the steak house my coke cost more than a draft beer. If you buy take out then you don't have to buy a drink. So a lot of variables there.

Having a wait person assume I don't want my change back would really irk me, but I've already said that.
However, if that isn't your problem but rather you need that money back to pay the electric, etc. then yeah, you really shouldn't be eating out.
Dining out is a luxury. I don't go to fast food restaurants or the other such establishments. When I dine out, I want elegant, I want the whole atmosphere and am willing to pay for it. And I tip well. I don't go out to eat if I have to worry about .68 or such. I don't go out often just because I am so busy with other activities, but when I do, Hell I throw the money around. I will buy that $80 bottle of wine and order the scallops at $40 for the entree.

Yeah, that is not dining out. I make better food at home than any of those crap places.

Oohhh!!!! Less than $90 a year. I pay that much every other week, for a mani/pedi.
Again, if that hurts your budget, you shouldnt be eating out.
$7 a week is not less than $90 a year.
"Lets say you eat out 10 times a week. That would be about $7 in lost change. If $7 a week makes that much of a difference, you really should just stay home and eat ramen noodles. You definitely shouldnt be going out."
-OhFour
It adds up. $364.
It really isn't up to you to determine and decide who gets to eat out and who should stay home eating ramen.

And I was responding to what YOU said. That money adds up.
Nobody can just arbitrarily decide I'm not getting my change back. Need doesn't factor into it. It's MY money.
Can I afford to lose $.68 at a time? Yes. But I should not have to, ever. Unless I tell the wait staff to keep the change, I expect all of my change to be returned to me. It would not be acceptable to the establishment if I only paid $16.00 on that $16.32 bill so why is it acceptable that I not get the correct amount of change in return if I paid $20?
DH and I work hard for every penny we have. And like I said, now, we can afford to lose that money but there was a time in both of our lives that $.68 was crucial. Every penny counted, that money could have meant I had to walk home from work late at night instead of affording gas for the car (back when gas was around $1.25). And we are usually generous tippers, we start and 20% and go up or down from there. We also understand the difference between a kitchen issue and a wait staff issue.
DH and I save all of our coins and use it for our vacations. I just counted out some what we have been saving for just the last 2 months. I wrapped over $200 of coins. I still have a bit more to wrap, probably another $50.
The price is the price. Its a contract. They tell you the price. You decide if it is worth the price. You pay the price. They dont have the right to charge you more. The gratuity is Your choice.
I don't care if it's the cheapest fast food restaurant in town or the fanciest stuck up restaurant in town. Until I give it to you it's not your money.

DH just went to Boston Market to get dinner. I should call him immediately & tell him that we can't afford it.

If 68 cents makes that much difference in your budget--you probably should.
One of the wealthiest men I know would have sat there until he got every last cent back insisting he needed it. He has tens of millions of dollars and he knows where every last cent is. He keeps track of his money because it's HIS money. He would have told that server that he couldn't afford to leave the change behind because in his mind, being careless with the cents leads to being careless with the dollars. So he could not afford to leave the cents behind. Nicest man. He would give you the shirt off his back and give anyone who needed a job, an opportunity. He paid for several needy inner city kids to attend the local catholic high school. Keeping track of all his dollars and cents allowed him to do that.
How do you think people become wealthy? By being aware of the pennies as well as the dollars.
flan
But wait--I just thought you said you weren't wealthy--so I guess it's not working.
Beyond that, one thing they also didn't do when they weren't wealthy was dine out when they couldn't afford it.
Oh, ffs, husker, Boston Market is a fast food place AND we had a 2 for 1 coupon.
I'm sure we'll be homeless soon...

We can afford to lose 68 cents. That's not the issue. The issue is the server ASSuming that they just get to keep the coins. They would not accept it if we paid them 68 cents less than the total bill. They want the entire payment. We want our entire change. They'll get it anyway but not if they effectively steal it. It's an honesty thing for me.
I would be annoyed at someone assuming they could keep my change. I would still tip them, but it would be 15% instead of 20% and that change I should have gotten would be deducted.
