Bring Back Waterboarding and ‘a Hell of A Lot Worse’
Permalink

During his campaign rally Sunday, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump doubled down on his comments that waterboarding is a useful interrogation technique.

“We are living in medieval times,” Trump told his supporters in New Hampshire, referencing Islamic terrorists. “There’s never been a time like this. Medieval times, they chop your head off. Even in the Wild West, you’d get shot, but they didn’t chop your head off.”

During the GOP primary debate on Saturday night, Trump said he would do “a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding” to captured terrorists.

“Mr. Trump, you said not only does it work, but that you’d bring it back,” the real estate mogul was asked during the debate.

“Well, I’ll tell you what. In the Middle East, we have people chopping the heads off Christians,” Trump began, then added:

We have people chopping the heads off many other people. We have things that we have never seen before. As a group, we have never seen before what’s happening right now. … I mean, we studied medieval times; not since medieval times have people seen what’s going on. I would bring back waterboarding, and I’d bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.

We have known that torture yields little in the way of results since WWII, so why we STILL believe it is a way to gather intel is beyond me. It is a violation of human rights, and worse, it brings us down to their level.

Call it what it is: sadism for no other reason to inflict pain because we want to and can.
Are we better than that as a nation, or not?

ISIS needs to be brought down. We cannot declare war on a group of people that are not a country, and we certainly don't want to legitimize a terrorist organization by doing so.

We need an army of Jack Bauers to take them down. It doesn't need to be in the news, I don't need to know about it, but the military needs special forces to focus on killing every single one of them and not stopping until they are ALL dead. I don't particularly want them tortured, but I want them dead.

And I'd rather have to torture a terrorist who would just as soon kill me as look at me than drop bombs and kill innocent people in the process.

When a terrorist attack occurs in your neighborhood or city, get back to us on that thought, since one of your family members or friends may be affected. No snark intended.

You are a history major, you KNOW torture has never been effective for gathering intel.

It satifies a need to hurt, and a need for revenge. Nothing else.

I do not and will not support it.

I want ISIS gone from the world. Torture will not help to further that, and we loose any moral high ground.

No.  There is no empirical evidence to back up this statement.  In fact, that study by the intelligence committee on torture:

"There's an interesting statistic presented in the Intelligence Committee report that does not appear in "Secrets, Politics and Torture," a claim that "seven of the 39 CIA detainees known to have been subjected to the CIA s enhanced interrogation techniques produced no intelligence while in CIA custody." Flipped on its head, those numbers tell a very different story: that 82 percent of the tortured prisoners talked. To me, that sounds very much like torture does work, at least in some ways at some times."

Question to those on the "moral high ground", what do you suggest?

I hear a lot of "we can't do that" and "we have to be better than that" but there is nothing suggested to replace these "offensive strategies.

Question to the Christians (and no snark intended):

I don't care if a terrorist gets tortured. They have no problem torturing those they capture. It's time for them to get a taste of their own medicine. Being "nice" obviously hasn't worked except to let the scum into our country.

It isn't torture for the sake of torture.  It is a means of extracting information that is important for national security.  Jesus never told anyone in the military to leave the military.  Obviously the military kills people.  Why is that flan?

The salvation of Jesus for your soul for all eternity does not mean you don't have to answer to man for your crimes on earth.  God is very clear about following man's law, and being punished for your crimes against it.

I try to take consolation by telling myself that this board does not represent the nation as a whole.

Thank heavens.  Some of you would have the world go socialist and the terrorists win.

I truly believe there are people on this board that applaud ISIS.  I mean, anything to do away with Christianity, right?

I don't know about applauding them, but there are certainly people who spend a heck of a lot more time taking potshots and heckling Christianity and Christians than they do worrying about ISIS and Muslim terrorists.

And they don't need to be names for everyone to know who they are.
