Because you haven't posted the article yet. It is awful and the EPA is running, I wonder who in the EPA was turning his/her back.

The Flint water crisis is a drinking water contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan, United States that started in April 2014. After Flint changed its water source from treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department water (which was sourced from Lake Huron as well as the Detroit River) to the Flint River, its drinking water had a series of problems that culminated with lead contamination, creating a serious public health danger. The corrosive Flint River water caused lead from aging pipes to leach into the water supply, causing extremely elevated levels of lead. In Flint, between 6,000 and 12,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead and they may experience a range of serious health problems.[1] The water change is also a possible cause of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the county that has killed 10 people and affected another 77.[2]

Eight lawsuits have been filed against government officials on the issue, and several investigations have been opened. On January 5, 2016, the city was declared to be in a state of emergency by the Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, before President Obama declared it as a federal state of emergency, authorizing additional help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security less than two weeks later.[3]

Four government officials—one from the City of Flint, two from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and one from the Environmental Protection Agency—resigned over the mishandling of the crisis, and one additional MDEQ staff member was fired and another has a termination hearing pending. Governor Snyder issued an apology to citizens and promised to fix the problem, and later sent $28 million to Flint for supplies, medical care and infrastructure upgrades.[4]

Apparently the government was trucking in water for their own use up to a year before the whole town was informed. All those in charge, and the higher ups, knew this was an issue. I was reading an article the other day that said the fix isn't going to be easy either. When they switched to lake water the water was so full of lead that even if they switch back now the pipes are so corroded with lead it won't make a difference.

It's going to be a huge fix. Obama just okayed five million in emergency funds and the state okayed some more. All the pipes will have to be replaced. The damage could last decades.

It's horrible.  And the fact that the government knew about it for over a year before anything was done is appalling.

This is a huge infrastructure failure. The Flint governing board knew about this well over a year ago and did nothing. Now they expect the national tax payer to bail them out.

Yeah, it's disgusting that children have lead poisoning, but that is Flint's governing boards burden and guilt. Those in the know (they were bringing bottled water in for themselves over a year ago already) should get jail time, IMHO.

Heads should roll for this! They knew a YEAR ago??? Yeah, they protected their own families - the hell with the ordinary citizen! Once the old lead pipes have been abraided with the corrosive water, there is nothing to do but replace them - entirely! Including inside the homes! Is there any technology yet to remove lead from the human body?

Not sure Momala. The schools are testing on a regular basis. But yes, the government knew over a year before the residents did that the water was contaminate beyond safe. The government offices were trucking in their own drinking water. The pipes were safe to begin with. No lead. The government was deeply in debt so they switched from Flint, Michigan water to the Detroit river for water. It was supposed to be a cost saving of something around 17 thousand over something like five years. But when they found out it was polluted with lead they didn't stop. They just kept on and had their own water trucked in. Meanwhile families got sick and children suffered serious damage. The repercussions of this will last for decades. And the pipes can no longer be used because of the heavy layer of lead lining them. A whole infrastructure will have to be replaced.

Looks like another "Love Canal" situation, where everything will have to be abandoned.

Love Canal was one contaminated small neighborhood; Flint is huge.

I know there's a very expensive drug that is used to chelate excess iron from people with -- I think -- hemochromitosis.

All those Flint officials that knew should go to jail, not just be sued.

DH has family living near there, we had to call and make sure they didn't have Flint water. This is a nightmare. And it's not like you can just drink bottled water - even showering with lead filled water is bad.

The children of abortion have been dismembered, poisoned and in most cases face death as a result of this "legal" procedure. Where are all the flint protesters expressing their outrage over the 55 million innocent children dead?

That's what you get when you leave Democrats in charge of a city for 40 years. Eventually, they can't pay their bills and are forced to take drastic measures to try to save money.

Heck, not only can the city not pay their bills, but a good percentage of the citizens weren't paying their water bills, either--which certainly didn't help.

It was run by Democrats for a long time. But they have a Republican in there now. Even HE didn't stand up for what was right. And the people weren't paying the water bills because they couldn't use the water. They purposely didn't pay because the water was KILLING them. So you know what the city did? They told everyone that if you didn't pay your water bill they would send CPS to come take your kids and put them in foster care. THAT was done under a Republican.

No.  They weren't paying BEFORE the water supply was switched.

also, 8 of 9 members of their current city council are democrats.

So I'll admit I didn't read the article closely. But is the water polluted from all the dead bodies dumped in the river?

the lead was already in the pipes.  The old water source didnt react as much with it, so the levels remained low.  They switched sources either because of bankruptcy, or to stave off bankruptcy, and the new water source was more corrosive and picked the lead out of the pipes.

Yikes. They can send a man to the moon but they can't figure out a way to filter lead out of water?

Yes.  It's been a Democratic government up until now.  Now they have a Republican governor but he had nothing to do with this mess.  And no, the people stopped paying when they found out their water was unusable.  I wouldn't pay for something I couldn't use either.  And then the governor told them if they didn't pay their water bills that the government would send CPS in to take their kids.  Oh, that's not the government overstepping their bounds at all.

The original water was safe.  Or at least safe enough.  When they switched there was so much lead in the water that it left layer upon layer of lead in all the pipes.  The pipes will have to be replaced.

No.  The reason their water system was in the red before all this happened was because people weren't paying their bills.

Its still the democrats in charge of city government.  The only reason the state is even involved is because the city went bankrupt and needed state oversight.

Yep, clean water can pass safely through almost any material and still be clean, but if the water contains compounds that "clean" the cohesiveness out of the pipes, than it goes into the water supply.  Many of those corrosive pipes are in the houses so no water facility cleansing will help once the water leaves the water supply storage area.  Of course, residents can put whole house filters on their main water line and replace the interior pipes which may bring the lead level down to withing regulation.  That doesn't give the gov't a pass though.
