Sinus Help

I need sinus advice.  I don't have a sinus infection.  Right now I have a sinus headache because my sinuses are so dried out.  I woke up with a nosebleed this morning from the dryness.  We have been running a humidifier for about a week now to try to get some moisture back in the air.  We're going to the store in a bit to pick up a Vicks plug in.  Please don't suggest going to the doctor because she'll only tell me to keep hydrated which I'm trying to do.  There's no infection so no need for antibiotics and I'm not paying a doctor to not tell me anything really.  Putting Vaseline in your nose is a no no (though tempting).  So anyone have any suggestions?  Has anyone used a nasal spray?  Do they work?  Do they help?  I can't take over the counter sinus meds.  I think I've seen something for kids noses.  Lil noses or something like that?  Anyone have any advice that doesn't involve going to the doctor or using Vaseline?  I have a netipot but I'm not clogged up so I haven't used it.

Does it help a lot? Or not? Is there a brand you like? Seriously not trying to sound stupid. Never used this stuff in my life.

If it's just the saline spray, it shouldn't matter, they are all basically the same. They also sell some in the baby department if you want something safe enough for babies.

I agree with the saline spray. I use it in the Spring as a preemptive attempt to avoid a sinus infection as suggested by my doctor. It works for me. It's pretty cheap too.

Similasan makes a moisturizing one.

Modudose Saline Solution for Inhalation - 100/box(5257 - 5mL Unit Dose)

Spouse and I use these 5 ml saline tubes, tip head back and slowly squirt saline solution into one side then the other, back and forth.

You'll taste the salt water at the back of your mouth.

Repeat as often as you want.

I use something called ocean nasal spray. Because of the chemo I am on, I am extremely dried up all the time. The nasal spray makes the nose feel wonderfully wet. Whether in the middle of a cold or dry winter or overall dehydrated I highly recommend it!

I don't think I really need a baby one per se. I just remember them marketing them for babies. It sounds like something like Similasan would be the way to go since my nose is so incredibly dry. I'm tired of nosebleeds and feeling the dried out feeling.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  This will give me a base for when we go to the store later.

Vicks steam vaporizer. Add a tsp of salt to the water and it will put a ton of moisture in the air. Turn down the heat. The kids would like the house a tad warmer but they know it dries them out.

Saline spray.

You can make your own. Look it up online.

Just make sure you measure right.

It burns like hell fire if you dont.

And when I was having daily nosebleeds because of the dryness and infection, the doctor told me to use a super, Uber thin smear of neosporine.

It helped a lot.

If you can stand it, a mask helps too. Your own breath will help keep it moistened.

LOL We keep the heat on 66-68 already. Pretty cool. And we don't even use it all that much. Not at all during the day because our house is so insulated that it really traps the heat in.

Cocaine would ruin my poor nose Trudy.

I get lots of nosebleeds, all the time really. When it's really bad, I put a little neosporian on a Qtip and swab the inside of my nose. Not sure if that's really "allowed", but I've been doing it for years and I'm still alive. And it really does help.

I got another Vicks plug in. I lent mine out and she said she'd return it Friday. I also got Ocean Spray and the nose spray for little kids. I looked for the moisturizing one but they didn't have it.

Neosporin is okay in a tiny amount but Vaseline is a no no.

Here's the deal with Vaseline...  People used to use it all the time.  But a lot of people don't know better.  Vaseline is oil based.  In the hospital we would actually give the patients KY jelly to use because it is water based.  The little hairs in your nose act like the filter on your ac system.  They move and filter out things that shouldn't be in your sinuses and lungs.  By using an oil based product you basically paralyze them and keep them from filtering out all the junk they need to filter out.  Which actually makes the situation worse.  A water based product like Neosporin or KY jelly doesn't keep them from moving and catching all the bad crap.

 Good to know.

I use Neosporin because A) it's usually to the point of a sinus infection when I use it, so I figure antibiotic is good.  And B) when my nose continues to bleed, I figure there are little "cuts" in there that need help healing.

i could be totally wrong, but it helps regardless

No.  You're correct.  Everything you said is correct.  A lot of older people use Vaseline for just about everything.  Seriously.  But there's a reason you're not supposed to put it in your nose.  Neosporin is not oil based.

Vaseline is very useful. YOu can shine your shoes with it and it has many uses. It is the BEST hand cream. My hands get very raw in the winter. Simply put a glob of vaseline on them and put cotton socks over your hands at bedtime and by morning, your hands are like a baby's bottom!

I use saline spray on the boys. Do you have a nebulizer? Sometimes when the boys get croupy I put some of that saline ed showed in it and it helps.

I bought a bottle of saline one time and it came with a tube of something to put under the nose to moisturize. Not sure what it is, but I use it on the boys when they get a little raw from wiping their nose all the time,

When I get sinus headaches, I rub a little peppermint oil on my temples and forehead. Not too close to the eyes though, it will burn. It eases the pain and feels like a cool breeze.
