I've told all of my that I want them to go to college.
But I also told them that just a degree won't put food on the table. That they need a marketable skill.

And ,the MORE people we push into college, the LESS valuable that degree becomes. So, free college sounds nice but instead of training the next generation, now it will result in an even longer period of adolescence entitlement. Yeah, what a great plan for the nation. A nation full of crybaby students. Not the America I want.
And, i think that if more people were paying their own way, then prices would go down. If parents stopped mortgaging their homes and their retirement income for this phony dream, then maybe costs would adjust and schools would be forced to live in reality and the way schools are run would change. The way these programs are run are extremely inefficient. At my son's tech school, he goes every day from 8 to 230pm with a lunch break and study time. It is 5 days a week like a job. They take attendance and that attendance is part of their record for employers. Under this system, my son is doing extremely well. I don't think he would fare as well in a traditional college where you have a class then 3 hours of no classes, then another class and long semester breaks, etc. The goal of college is to impart information. I personally dont' think the traditional college model is all that effective anymore.
Yep, the availability of student loans is a huge factor in the rise in tuition. If money wasn't so readily available, the demand for college full time wouldn't be so high, thus bringing the cost down. if any of these kids ever took Economics 101 they would know this.

But aren't all colleges "private" to an extent now?
It isn't compulsory to go.
It's a privilege.
And some are Christian colleges.
Like Lee University.
It's a Christian school.
Or Bryant.
And if the state colleges are free, how are they going to handle that kind of student load?

In TN, Junior College is "free". I think thats the best way to separate out those that truly want an education from those that just want to party. Those with the better grades can easily continue to a 4 year college or university.
