If you are smart, you understand that spelling matters in your resume, in professional documents, in communications to your boss or in your professional life. If you are smart, you also understand that Texting is just a form of short hand, where the point is to communicate the information between 2 parties or a group and that you also understand that there are abbreviations in words and language that communicate exactly what you want to communicate without having to type out the full word, thus being a far more Efficient means of communication in that particular setting.
If you are smart, you also understand that language is not static. That it changes, grows, evolves over time. That new words and new ways of communicating come into our world everyday. Smart people learn how to use new communication techniques and language. Rigid people are still correcting punctuation and expecting footnotes aka Kate Turabian.

Thankfully, our school still teaches spelling. The ability of a reader to decipher shouldn't mean someone doesn't need to make an effort with spelling, or neatness for that matter. This is particularly true if you wish to be taken seriously, and not written off as an idiot. It saddens me that these types of things, along with cursive and learning to count back change has fallen to the wayside in some schools.

The boys had spelling tests last year. Not sure about this year.
What grade are they? DD's third grade teacher said they do spelling tests up to grade 3 b/c it is about learning to read. After that, they know how to read, and "they will never be without spell check". Gag.

When did you get the text? If you got the text yesterday or today, then it is Thursday. Otherwise, you need to ask.
Received it Sunday, I figured it meant Tuesday, the first day back in the office after our business trip. Just thought it was a mistake that could go either way.
Applying to me as a being, spelling matters. It has nothing to do with my intelligence and intellect.I cannot speak as to learning spelling in school as I was not raised here, but as much as possible I do try to spell correctly.I have worked in the medical and paramedical professions for decades, as well as being an auditor.People also ask me to proofread papers, letters, documents and other items on a regular basis.
As English is not my first or second or third, etc. language, I am very diligent about how I communicate with others.Spelling correctly results in my being understood better as well as understanding others better.6 of my co-workers do not have English as their first language. When they communicate with me by e-mail, they do not spell correctly or describe what they want in a manner I can comprehend, so many times I will have to clarify with them as to what specifically they need assistance with.Sometimes they are at a loss for words as to how to describe what they need. When I ask them a question, they find it intimidating, yet I am just trying to figure out what it is they want me to do for them.
In the context of my daily life, spelling does matter.

We are adults, and most of us educated. If something is misspelled, it is most likely a typo - especially those posting from a phone. Unless you honestly can't figure out what it is supposed to be, harping on typos is both petty and childish and shows you have nothing constructive to add to the discussion, but would rather be a shrew.

LGS makes lots of typos on her phone, plus her eyes aren't great. I don't correct any.
You don't need to be correcting anyone's spelling and you don't do it to those you like. You're not our teacher or our mother so the only reason you do it is because you have nothing else to add to the conversation.

I have to say, my grandmother was an English teacher. She harped on spelling and grammar all the time. It was beaten into our heads. So I want to cringe when I see some of the misspellings on here. I know sometimes it's autocorrect on phones. I wish people would take that little extra moment to read their message before hitting send. That's what I do. Of course, my kids also say I text like an old lady. But I refuse to use text language too. If your post is so filled with misspellings I usually skip over it. I'm sorry if that's rude or tacky. But if you can't take the time to make it understandable I'm not going to take the time to read it. I think the worst worst worst posts are the ones that don't use capitols or periods. Where the whole post is just one big run on sentence. I rarely read those. You may be the smartest person in the world but your post doesn't reflect that. I try not to correct other peoples spelling though. The last time I did it was in fun when LL was teasing me about how to use an apostrophe correctly and she spelled apostrophe incorrectly. I told her to get back to me when she could spell it right!
I honestly think online spelling does matter to a certain level. What you see online gives other people a first impression about you. I know when I was doing online dating spelling was definitely something I looked at. Maybe you really are brilliant. But if that is the case you are also saying I am too lazy to clean up my writing. So I do think what and how you post shows a lot about who you are.

Yes. We don't have much to go on when reading others' posts. It's our "face" on the internet.
When every third word is misspelled, it gives me a clear picture of who you are.

Unless you wish every post to contain a reference to a government building in it ... (Which would make for some hilarious posts!)

I know that was directed at me. I know that little jab was meant for me. My comments were in general. I think you really enjoy trying to insult me and start a fight. Again, my comments were in general. If you don't give a rat's a$$ about me or what I think or who I am then my comments should not have bothered you in the least. You could always skip over them instead of replying to them in some passive aggressive way.

I will use text speak and I tend to type in shorthand on FB messenger. I don't usually bother with capitals and such in informal communication like that. I learned more nuances about English grammar than I ever cared to while getting my BA. I make sure my spelling and grammar are correct when it matters - like on a resume. I will admit to being lazy in informal communication. I just don't see the need to write a college-level post every time I type something. Nor do I feel the need to write 'Would you like to meet for dinner at Denny's at 7?' when 'dinner, dennys, at 7?' gets my point across. Of course, who I'm writing to would matter. If it were a coworker, I'd type the former.
I have a friend who uses voice-to-text. I've gotten so used to the errors that I don't notice until what he wrote is truly incomprehensible.

Omg...are you SERIOUS? It was in direct response to Welts, Chefs post got in between. Nice try to make it about you again.

Spelling is important in a business situation. I prefer to read posts with correct spelling but don't point out people's spelling errors on message boards. Well except last week on Czech's daily. I only did that because I finally realized myself the word was spelled wrong when something about it had been tickling my brain all day & I hope she knew it was in good fun.

Then maybe you should quote who you are talking to. Your post came right after chef quoted and responded to my post. Then you even went back and ETA that you were (specifically) not referring to chef. You said nothing to the effect that you weren't responding to me. Which leaves it open for speculation.

I was up when she posted it and responded immediately to her post. I wanted to say something so badly but I didn't want to come off as the grammar Nazi! It bugged me forever though!

Sometimes i cant quote on my phone. Its not all the time, but its sporadic. And i went back IMMEDIATELY to add the eta because i saw that her post came in before mine. Had nothing at all to do with you...

Hanging out with flan you've certainly learned to make it all about you. That used to be her job.

Still is. flan thinks this thread is about her, too.
