Bernie wants college to be free. I'm against this as college is a choice, and not a requirement and indeed, there are many people with no need to go to college. It would not equally benefit all Americans and yet would be paid for by tax dollars.
However, I do agree that college costs have gotten out of hand. We have some tax breaks to offset this, but they are minor - there is the education tax credit, and student loan interest is tax deductible. But, with the pressing amounts of student loan debt many people graduate with, I'm curious as to what ideas people would have to help with this assuming college is not actually going to get cheaper or free.
I think that tuition should be tax deductible across the board. Simple deductions are easier than dealing with tax credits.
There is also a bill that has been introduced to the House twice and ignored, the last time H.R. 5399. It would allow employers to repay student loans up to $5000 per year without it being taxable income. It has been introduced twice and never gone anywhere.
There are some ways to give relief that don't equal FREE (b/c we know it isn't free), but so many options just get ignored.
What thoughts do you have on student loans?

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I think that colleges need to stop being subsidized by the Govt Teat. That if they had to compete in the Real world as the rest of us do and as businesses do, then the costs would reflect real market value. Pull the plug. Let the Universities Collapse. Those that have a real purpose in the world will find a way to survive. They will stop offering classes on Lady Gaga and set up certification programs and other programs that have value in the real world. And, if parents stopped mortgaging their homes and retirements buiying into the nonsensical college baloney, costs would also drop. Of course, my solution is LESS govt. Bernie and Hillary always want MORE govt. That is their solution to EVERY problem. MORE govt. Which as we know doesnt' work.
And, the notion that most of these current careers need a 4 yr degree? Well some do and some don't. We could have more trade and tech related and not so much 4 yr.
Till colleges stop charging an arm and leg, vocational schools are the way to go. I will forever be someone that thinks college is a waste of time and money as long as our colleges are churning out self entitled little brats.
I think it should be a LOT more difficult to get student loans.
Car loans and house loans are secured by the value of the asset they are used to purchase, and applicants are turned down unless they have a good credit history.
Student loans?
Parent loans, or loans co-signed by the parents, are common.
But NOTHING IS DONE to make sure the money will be used to buy something OF VALUE.
If the banks had to have assurance that the degree the money was going toward, would actually be more valuable than not,
a lot of loans would be denied.
And all the loans to worthless tech schools, the ones who promise to get people high paying jobs (but never do), they would be rejected.

Caitlyn will have hers paid off soon. She has about 5k left and she went to cosmology school. She also had a few scholarships. Not much, covered books and tools.
Jesse is wanting to go translate. He has expressed an interest in teaching but he wants to work translating for the UN.
I think it's important to have a counselor too. Know where you want to go.
We have tons of IT people. And now it seems everyone is going for business management.
Certain fields get flooded and then jobs are hard to find.
Today, the VR rep we talked to told us that sign language is the big money maker where languages and translation is involved.
So Jesse is going to add that to his list of languages.
All that to say this.
No, college should not be free.
Student loans are expensive and need a cap, I think.
But more guidance and guidelines would help to keep fields from being flooded while others dry up.

She went to school to study the cosmos? How cool is that? Did she ever meet Neil Degrasse Tyson?

DS paid his way for college as I've said before, I did pay about 25%. He did it working for a company that paid 25K in tuition and he went to a state University, a good one, and one that was reasonably priced. Plus he paid some cash I I paid some. He now has 70K in the GI bill for his use. If he has kids he can transfer that to them.

And colleges don't churn out entitled spoiled brats - parents do.
As for the tuition issue, we have been defunding the colleges and universities for years. State and Fed money has slowly dwindled to almost a pittance. IF the govt should get involved, I think it should only be in funding education back to the level that they used to. And you should not be able to take out more in loans than the cost of tuition plus room and board. Period. That won't solve everything but it would be a start.

Military is not for everyone, but can be for lots of people. Going part time is a good option as well. Kids turning their noses up at those options speaks volumes to their entitled attitudes.

Those programs stopped with Bill Clinton.

Oh I agree. And a huge part of that is the parents who raise entitled little brats. And some public schools are to blame. They don't encourage kids to take those routes because their matriculation rates are publicized and used for teacher and principal raises and to sell parents on the school/community. No one would want to send their child to a school where a majority of the kids did NOT go on to a 4 year university. And some schools flat out discourage the "smart kids" from joining the military. They steer them towards other options so their school looks like a better school. They want as many kids as possible to attend prestigious universities so the school looks like it's high achieving .

As others here have said you can find a way to finance your education if that is what you want to do.

Everyone thinks they'll be able to pay it back from the wonderful jobs they'll get, with their liberal arts degree, or their PhD in English, or their degree in Latin of Surfing or Computer Assembly or FORTRAN or COBOL programming or Astronomy or Astrology.

I know of no reputable college that teaches FORTRAN or COBOL. There were some in the late 1990's and people who took those courses had the potential of making a mint during Y2K plus in the years that followed on financial systems.
I've decided that if I can't pay for all of DD's education I will take a life insurance policy out on her so if, god forbid, something happens at least I will be able to pay off any loans I cosigned.

No they didn't. There are all kinds of scholarships out there. It has nothing to do with the federal government.
Before Clinton, those on government assistance could take advantage of programs that paid for school.
It was designed to get people off welfare.
But Clinton stopped that and many programs like it.
If I remember correctly, because it put too much pressure on people and made them feel bad.

Really, Husker, that's your answer? The hope is always that they will be able to pay it back. But if 18 and 19 year old kids had the wherewithal to pay back student loans, they wouldn't need them in the first place.

My mother didn't have to co-sign any loans for me. I got a scholarship, a grant, and my own loans. Undergrad is paid off....law school, well, they amortize that like a mortgage nowadays.

Oh cripes. When you borrow six figures to go to an expensive private school and major in philosophy or something else equally useless, then no, there is no way you are going to be able to pay that back.
Why should everyone else else have to pay for such stupidity?
