First, my children are not mistakes. So you can go screw yourself with that line of crap.
Second, no. The dead beat has to be extremely far behind before jail is an option. And once in jail, they only need to pay a portion to get out. It's usually the amount of one weeks child support.
I used child support enforcement. And I was told it was a program to help the deadbeat pay enough to stay out of jail. Not to get the money for the kids.
When you open an "account" with them, they get 30 days to set it up.
They get 30 days to review the case.
They then have 30 days to file any action.
Each step gets a letter sent to the DB to notify them. And each notification has 30 days to respond.
Once an action is filed and the notice is sent, 30 days have to pass before anything else can be done.
It can take 6 months to a year before anything is actually done.
I once received a check from CSE for $1.
I called, it couldn't be right.
I was told it was right and to be thankful. Cause, and this was the exact words, "didn't have to send that".
You can't get blood from a turnip, and you can't get child support from someone who just does not care.

No husker, re read this article please. This lady says she had to BEG them to go after him. She even said they wouldn't arrest him when there was an order out to do so. When I was trying to get child support for my kids they literally told me that they don't bother going after men who don't have money coming in. So they actually HELP those men. The message they send them is "If you hide and work under the table illegally we won't bother hunting you down and throwing you in jail. It's not worth it to us."
Furthermore, why should the government fix anything if that's the attitude you want to have. Why should we educate your kids? They're not our problem. Figure it out on your own. As a country we handle a lot of things. That's what we do as a country.

Child support is like a creditor. In Texas if you pay five dollars a year you stay off the jail list.

Everyone should support the kids they procreate to make. Statistics show that children whose fathers pay child support excel far beyond those that don't. These kids have a higher rate of becoming drop outs and going to jail. And then people biotch about that. Take your pick. Use the money to help out early on or you can fully support them in jail later.

If you live in puerto Rico and don't pay your child support they go after your parents. Lol!

Except they don't really enforce them paying. I've even been told that. They don't put them in jail. Even if you ask them to. They only go after the guys with money. And that's not fair either. Why focus on only them?
My ex was put in jail for non payment. I didn't ask the courts to put him in jail. He had to go to court every 30 days to prove he was looking for a job. They put him in jail when he couldn't prove it. They put deadbeats such as my ex in Jail for the weekend letting them out on Monday. The deadbeats that stay in jail are those that have the money, they stay until they pay up.

I don't doubt they put IKWTDS ex in jail. But this is the minority. For every guy who goes to jail there are hundreds of thousands that don't go to jail. Ask LL. That is the truth. They mostly DO NOT put men in jail for failure to pay. I tried to get money for years and years. They knew where my ex lived and wouldn't arrest him. He was working under the table so technically he didn't have an income. They told me it wasn't worth their resources to jail him. One time I even lost it in court. I got an order to show up in court to review our child support orders. I called and asked what would happen if I didn't show since I knew my ex wasn't going to be there. They told me I'd be in contempt of court and a warrant would be issued for my arrest. So I took a day off of work to go. When I got there there state appointed lawyer pulled me aside, said he didn't show up, and that nothing about my case would be changing. I went off on him. I told him I was told I had to show up or an arrest warrant would be issued. They had no problem doing that to ME but nothing happens to him. The lawyer looked at me and said, "What do you want from us?" I told him, "Either do your damn job or leave me the hell alone. I'M the one working to provide for these kids. I'M the one putting a roof over their head, clothes on their backs, food on the table, and insurance on them. And now I had to take a day off work and lose income that I really need to come down here and be told that it's useless. Don't bother me." It was a long time before I heard back from them. Another time when I called them they flat out told me they have limited resources and only go after men they think will pay.
I think people don't understand that they get a fee when they collect the child support. They are not going to do anything that doesn't make them money. This isn't really about the kids or about how much our country cares about the kids. It's just a business.

Because, Husker, if they were REALLY threatened with prison, they might find a way to pay that child support. Why is this simple concept so difficult for you?
Our prisons are already overcrowded.
So what?
If a deadbeat who's being paid off the books, had to pay $800 or $1000 a month in CS to actually stay out of prison, the ones making more than double that would pay it.
If the empty threat of jail became a REAL threat, extra overcrowding would not be a problem.

We CANNOT afford to put "hundreds of thousands" in jail (not that I believe for a second the number is anywhere close to that), especially given the fact that if they are in jail, they then cannot pay support, anyway, so it is a useless act.

Not in any real meaningful way. It's about right up there with smoking marijuana in terms of punishment and the law as deterrence.

Really? Deadbeat parents affect us all. This is a MAJOR issue. It affects the welfare system, taxpayers, and the children themselves. You may think it is not serious, but it is one of the biggest failures of our society and it needs to be enforced.

Yep. People bitch about welfare moms but tons of them are on welfare because of deadbeat dads.

Sure. Although, as a percentage, deadbeat moms are more likely to be behind on or pay no child support. The only reason the raw numbers are skewed towards dads is that moms still get custody far more often.
either way, though, putting them in jail doesn't pay the child support. Come up with something else if that is the problem you want fixed.

Throw their useless a$$es in jail. Every M-F they have to be up at the crack of dawn working a REAL job. They can pick up trash along the highway, trim trees, or any of those other jobs that need doing that don't need an education. They will work and remain in custody until their debt is paid. And they can tack on the cost it takes to house and feed them too. If this country got more serious about it we wouldn't have people running out on their debts. The only reason they do it now is because they know they can get away with it.

You're not happy with any answers anyone will give you. The only answer you will accept is that you have the right to degrade women for making bad decisions. So whenever you have something serious to add to this conversation then I can stop laughing at you and listen to your nonsense.

No one else has added anything serious.
I would start with absolutely attaching visitation to payment. That won't work for those who simply abandon their kids, but it would matter to a lot of them.
I would make it exceedingly difficult for either parent to leave the state--again, it works better for those who give a crap about custody.
Greater cooperation among the states would also help--not sure what all that would entail, but even a national database would help.
You aren't going to get them all. Some truly don't have any money and are on welfare, themselves. Some you won't find.
At the end of the day, however, this is a moral issue. You can't force anyone to be a good person. It would make as much sense to outlaw sex outside of marriage as a preventive measure.

And what you say makes no sense. If you have custody then you should GET support. Not pay it. Why would you pay support on a child you already support? And you can't make anyone stay in the state any more than you can make them not have sex.

WTF are yiu babbling about??? I didn't saynanything of the sort about the support. Try reading.

Makes no sense. If you attach payment to custody you are saying you can have custody when you pay support. You don't pay for the right to see your kid. You pay whether or not you do. And if you already have the kid the other person should be paying.

These men are breaking the law. Maybe some don't think it's an important law. A lot of people don't think drug laws matter. All a sense of perspective I guess. If this is the attitude we're going to take there's really no reason to jail anyone. I mean we can't stop them from breaking the law after all.

This issue affects everyone. My brother had to watch his daughter leave the state to live with her mother--who had another daughter living with her who used/dealt drugs (along with pretty much every guy she was ever around).
I have two friends--one male, one female--whose ex's are way behind in child support. My SIL lost a custody fight to her drug using ex.

Is it a fantasy to think that if they CAN pay, if they HAVE the money, they will pay to stay out of jail?

Our prisoners wash hospital laundry.
As well they should. There's many jobs these guys could do to work and make money to pay their debts. I do understand why if a man goes out and buys a brand new expensive car and runs off on the payments people are all for him being punished for not paying it off. If a man makes a child and runs off on it people don't give a damn.

We do love our cars, don't we?

They're leaving the kids in the care of the co=signers.
Besides, when he misses car payments, the dealer repossesses the car. So, he misses kid payments, the Mom repossesses the kid. Isn't that enough?

Visitation is not connected to support for a reason.
Neither parent can use it against the other.
AND there are those who don't deserve visitation. They are not safe for the kids to be around.

I think people who haven't lived it should keep their know nothing nose out of it.
Raising kids in a society of deadbeat parents is EVERYBODY's business. Especially when you had to collect food stamps because your dead beat wouldn't pay support and you couldn't be bothered to make him.

And this is why it affects EVERYONE. We want the welfare rolls decreased but we don't want to force dads to pay child support. You can't complain about welfare if you're not going to make parents do their part. And we shouldn't HAVE TO put people on food stamps because people don't want to be bothered to collect it.
