15 years ago, I went to work for a company that made an interesting medical device, for which there was no defined use.

They had 140 research papers written over 14 years, none of which said anything about "here's why it should be used, and here's how."

It took me a year to get some REAL research done, that developed a protocol for using it, and showed that, when it was used following the protocol,

the incidence of severe brain injury (stroke) dropped in open heart surgery from 2 1/2% to 1% or less, AND

a life-altering brain injury that used to impact over 40% of open heart surgery patients (loss of short term memory, and damage to part of the brain that we use to figure things out)...

that injury was eliminated.

Yesterday in my doctor's office, one of the secretaries told me she'd had open heart surgery, and where, and when.

There's a 40% chance that by getting this device into standard use in heart surgery in that hospital, I saved her ability to work, and to live on her own.

I've done CPR in subway stations, in the street at accident scenes, and even at a wedding.
Sometimes they lived, and sometimes not.
At least I kept them alive until the ambulance got there.

I used CPR on a guy for 15 minutes before the EMTs arrived - he survived, and went back to work at the bank. I was a total wreck for the rest of the day.

We were recognized by Al Roker (of NBC fame) for teaching wheelchair square dancing. Missed our Wednesday classes only twice in 20 years (snow storms). We brought two squares (8 couples) three times a year when we did our "picnics" to help serve our group. We'd do anything from "Where's the beef?" to "Porky Pig-Out" to "Sunday Tea" where we'd cook anything they requested for dinner that night. The NYC rehab hospital they were at was more like a jail - very rarely did any of the patients progress to where they could live on their own.

That's awesome Ed. To know you did something that mattered.

You made a difference in her life.
