Lego's newest figure: A hip-looking stay-at-home dad

With Lego Star Wars becoming a TV series and Lego Batman getting his own movie next year, maybe screens will soon feature the toy giant’s newest figurine: Lego stay-at-home dad.

The block company’s Lego City introduced a version of its iconic yellow minifigure at this year’s New York Toy Fair meant to reflect the nation’s roughly 2 million dads who don’t work outside the house.

Sporting blue jeans, red flannel and a beard, the toy could be misconstrued for a Lego lumberjack figure (or perhaps a Lego guy from Portland) if not paired with a stroller and office-attired mom. The company introduced its first minifigure in a wheelchair last month.

“We need to stay in tune with the world around us,” Lego Systems president Soren Torp Laursen told Fortune. “We aren’t responding to demand from anyone. We are trying to portray the world around us and listen to our consumer base.”

While Mattel’s Barbie received attention for updating its dolls to reflect many women’s body types, Fortune noted that Lego has met gender-related criticism in the past.

A line called “Lego Friends” aimed at girls featured playsets with hair salons and shopping malls deemed too stereotypical for girls. The line later broadened to feature outdoor activities like archery.

So here's my question on this. Why? Why couldn't they just use a regular dad? Like why does this guy have to be unshaven and unkempt? Don't get it. And they say they purposely paired him with a business woman. Why? If a man chooses to stay home does it mean that the wife has to fit into a stereotype? Meh, this seems like more hype than it's worth.

And now the women are getting upset because Lego mom is holding a bottle and not breastfeeding. YEAH! Let's give Lego mom's boobs and have Lego baby latch on. Craziness. Pure insanity.

I remember being under tremendous pressure to breast feed by nurses and hospital staff. It was insane. I finally told them all to f*** off.

My dd felt pressured  too. She tried  but couldn't. Both her girls are healthy  and hardly ever sick.  Neither  one of them has any food  allergies.

Toys should just be toys without a political/social agenda. Let the kids use their imagination and just have fun.

Our Lego sets just had a couple heads you could put on any body.

Most kids don't care. They just want the toy.

I'd still rather see a kid playing with Lego, of any kind of perceived connotation, than with an iwhatever.

I did the same.  I tried and my kids didn't gain any weight.  I nursed for comfort for them.  Don't actually know if it helped any.

But, if we want to start a PC thread about this Lego picture that mother is way over feeding that kid.  Look at the size of that bottle compared to the kid!  biggrin

well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/03/04/is-breast-feeding-really-better/

This article cites the 2014 studies that prove there is no difference between breast fed and formula fed babies. Previous studies did not account for socio economic factors of the parents, education of the parents, access to health care for the child, etc. Once those factors are controlled and children in the same families who were fed differently were studied, the researchers can determine zero benefits of one form of feeding over the other.

Moral: don't let anyone shame you for how you feed your baby. It's all good.

 Absolutely.

As a mom who had to return to work @ 6 weeks post-partum, I was grateful that I could breastfeed.

I still remember coming home, sitting in the rocker & nursing. What a perfect way to unwind.

I couldn't breastfeed, but there's no way I could have returned at 6 weeks.

I was still recovering from an emergency C-section and a weapons-grade case of post partum depression.

Having a year off was just what I needed.

Beards are in now. If this was made in the 70's it would be a moustsche. The beard doesn't mean he is dirty or a slob. It means he is hip and cool.
