Anyone with experience with the different types of HW flooring? I've always gone with nailed down. But the interlocking is less money, same type of wood and thickness. I am doing a natural hickory on the second floor so not well traveled areas.

With nailed down flooring, do the nails ever come up?
No, the flooring I have were nailed down from the side down, just like decking can be done. No nail has ever come up. The only con that I can see to interlock is it is a floating floor so the floor during the winter when the material contracts could have wider space between the boards.

We have the interlocking in the den and my parents room.
It was really easy to put in once you get started.
But there are places, like at the patio door, we're it seems to have warped a little. You can't see it but you can feel it.
And there is a place where the old couch sat, it marked the floor.
It isn't as thick as the nail down wood.
If we could do it again, we'd get the nail down.
We would probably use reclaimed wood actually.

This flooring is, actually it looks thicker. The difference is the grove for interlock or nail down.
BTW, do not get bamboo. I cannot believe how popular it is. on a scale of 1 -5 it is a 2 for thickness, can you imagine the dents you would have in that really quick?

I'm sure there are different brands and such. Different kinds. I was just saying ours isn't as thick.
I kid about us growing our own bamboo flooring.
At this rate, we should have it finished by 2035?

If you live where you have seasons, go with the nailed down. I've heard it expands and contracts with the weather, and can loosen.
Now this is confusing, the interlock expand and contract without restriction, but the nailed down ones are nailed to a sub flooring with different expansion/contraction rates. All very confusing.

Our hard wood floors are over a hundred years old and we have never had a loose nail. Did the old timers install wood floors differently back then? I have never heard of any one with nails coming up. 😳

Possibly!! We had nails at the door jambs ( on the floor obviously) bcome up where the rooms met. Every once in awhile you would hit it just right...it was like being shot in the foot! Lol

My grandmother had the old wood floors. The only place a nail would come up was at a door. That strip that goes across it.
But we have the nails come up there too.

Maybe I have it backwards then. I thought interlocking were all engineered hardwoods. Not sure then what we went with. I think hardwoods. Maybe glue involved? You'd think I'd remember, since it was done only a few years ago.
Just checked. We went with solid hardwoods which required nails. Can't use that on concrete because of the moisture. But we have carpet in our basement, for this reason, so the hardwoods were on the two upper levels.

Yeah, I may be a bit confused. The interlock flooring I am looking at is 3/4" thick. I think the bottom 1/4" may be plywood. Still I think I may still go with the interlock.

So interlock it is. Contractor measured the rooms today and explained the pro s and cons. On my phone so will explain the pros con's later if anyone is interested

Have ya'll seen the concrete floor made to look like wood?
It's pretty amazing.

I would be interested in hearing the pros/cons, IKWTDS!
Oh yes. So, my house is 30 years old. The contractor said that although he doesn't feel any dips of such in the floor if they discover any after the carpet is pulled up I will either have to stop the project and put down new subflooring (if I have the nailed HW) or they can level with cement which cannot be nailed through. Interlock is less expensive for labor, and this contractor has been installing it for 20 years and never has had to go back and re do anything. Plus the nails do loosen due to nailing one product to another product that has different contraction/expansion rates. AND if you need to do remodeling, the flooring comes up easily since it is floating and can be re used. Of course, people turn their noses up at the interlock since most think nailed down is best, I did too until I talked to this guy. He wasn't trying to sell me since he knows I knew which wood I wanted, just didn't know if I wanted interlock or nailed down.

They are gorgeous but maybe in my basement or garage.
If I were building, I'd do it.

They are probably nailed down on a sub floor made from the same type of wood as the flooring.

So it was delivered today with the underlay. I am excited about the underlay. It is not that red paper put under nailed down HW. It is a thicker type that is actually a moisture barrier and insulation. The rooms I am putting the HW in are on the NW side of the house so they can get cold when it is windy. It will make the rooms comfy and help with sound proofing too.
