My cousins and I went all the way to Pigeon Forge in the bed of pawpaws pick up.
It's at least 4 hours from here.
And we went crooked back roads with lots of lumps and bumps and ate McDonald's as we went.

There is always some risk in life. Without any risk--there is no fun.
I don't want to live like that--and I don't want my kids and grandkids to live that way, either.
My grandpa had a 1917 Model T Touring. One time, he drove all the way to the county seat and back in it with all us grandkids for a parade. There were THIRTEEN of us kids in that old Model T.

But a child is not qualified to decide about motor vehicle safety.
You are the one who keeps telling us how many kids are killed in auto accidents.

And they are not making the decisions.
As to your second point--see, all the car seats and seatbelts don't do squat, anyway. Kids still die.

I guess it's better if the pick-up gets into an accident and the kids are ejected from the truck bed, smashing their skulls open.
That will show those politically correct dweebs!

Kids still get killed in car accidents--even if they have all the safety features on.

Did you have ANY fun growing up?

When we were teenagers, there wasn't any such thing at the time as an extended cab or crew cab pickup (they had them, but they were rare and no one around us had one).
When you wanted to go somewhere, you piled 3 or 4 in the front--and the rest in back.

Yep. And no one wore helmets when riding their bicycles!

I had lots of fun growing up, thank you.
Of course she had fun--she just doesn't want anyone to have any NOW.
ZERO FUN.

Oh, FFS.
Let's MINIMIZE the number of deaths because we have the KNOWLEDGE.

Let's put all kids in a bubble and make deaths ZERO.
No swimming--pool, oceans, rivers, or lakes, even unsupervised baths are out for children under 12.
No riding in automobiles--EVER. This includes anything with a motor such as go-carts and 4-wheelers, as well.
No riding bikes.
No riding skateboards.
No riding horses.
No playing sports.
No mowing the lawn.

I'm not OK with kids dying or living the rest of their lives as vegetables.
No one is--but EVERYTHING carries some risk.
Are you going to outlaw riding bikes? Kids get hurt on those even if they are wearing a helmet.
Outlaw sports? Despite all our safety equipment, kids still get hurt playing them.
Outlaw swimming? Drowning is a leading cause of child deaths.
Yeah, but you could mitigate those risks....like watching your kid when he's swimming.
If you can't swim--that won't do any good. My mom couldn't. We still swam in the river.
You can "mitigate" the risks of having kids in the back of a pickup--and most people do. They aren't driving down the interstate at 80 miles an hour. Normally, they are going fairly slow on roads that don't see a lot of traffic. That IS mitigating that risk.

So what I find Ironic is how the libs want kids in car seats to age 8 or the height of 4'8" I believe, at least in Ma. BUT they want to chastise the owners of SUVs because of gas usage. But if you have three kids you cannot safely buckle in 3 car seats in the back of a prius or other small car. You have to have an SUV of minivan.

The Highlander Hybrid I drove for 3 years got better mileage than the Prius.

I would have to say that it was a time of innocence and freedom but that doesn't mean that I would do away with seatbelts. One of my dd's classmates was killed in a accident, wasn't wearing a seatbelt, two high school sisters were killed, not wearing a seatbelt, a young man and his friend was killed, not wearing a seat belt. I could go on.
Jesse was able to come out of the car seat but then a law was changed and he had to go back in one. Just because of his age.
We still wear seatbelts.
But I also think there is a lot more distractions now than there use to be.
Cell phones, cars that talk to you, heck, even do a lot of the driving.
People aren't as diligent as they once were.

Wow. Looks like several don't believe kids should have an adventurous childhood. No wonder the world is messed up.
I'm not sure how riding in a vehicle without seatbelts is adventurous. And while you may drive well, it doesn't mean every other idiot on the road does.

I'm not against adventure... my dd traveled to England, France, India and Jordan while she was still in college and my son done things that made my skin crawl. They just better be sure to wear their seatbelt.
I rode in the back of a pick up and without a seat belt plenty of times as a kid. I don't remember it as being anything special, so I have no issues with denying my children that adventure. Children are a lot safer in an accident if they are properly restrained.

I did, too. It was windy, uncomfortable, and tossed you around. Not really an adventure so much as something to endure.

I remember one particularly rough ride in the back of a pickup truck. There were, I think, 10 or 11 of us total. 4 in the cab and the rest in the bed. The driver took this old "washboard" dirt road. I don't know how all of us in the bed didn't end up with chipped teeth, the rough ride was making them chatter so much and so hard.
