Whole Foods Sells Peeled Oranges In Plastic Containers, World Revolts

This is pretty bad, any way you peel it.

 03/03/2016 03:56 pm ET | Updated 2 days ago

Whole Foods encourages shoppers to bring their own shopping bags and prides itself on an ability to provide healthy options to shoppers in the best possible way. But a recent packaging flub is making us shake our heads.

A photo of peeled oranges sitting in plastic containers at a Whole Foods location in California, or rather, an utter misuse of packaging, sent the Internet abuzz when it was posted to Reddit with the caption, "Are people really that lazy nowadays?"

Much like the reaction to the asparagus water debacle of 2015, when the brand came under fire for briefly selling water with stalks of asparagus submerged inside, many Twitter users were quick to question the brand's motives. Nathalie Gordon tweeted: "If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn't need to waste so much plastic on them."

Among the over 17,000 retweets which included other instances of stores foregoingproduce's natural casing for something synthetic, came a response from the brand itself. In a Tweet, Whole Foods apologized for the unfortunate packaging, vowing to pull the oranges from the shelf and "leave them in their natural packaging: the peel."

A spokeswoman from Whole Foods further explained to The Huffington Post, "a lot of our customers love the convenience of our cut produce offerings, but this was a simple case where a handful of stores experimented with a seasonal product spotlight that wasn't fully thought through. We're glad some customers pointed it out so we could take a closer look."

Look, we get it. Peeling oranges can be a daunting task, almost as much as say, boiling your own eggs or chopping up your own celery. But orange you glad this product got taken off the shelf?

Many times, I've seen people selling bags of peeled oranges at traffic lights in Manhattan and Queens. Clearly, there is a market.

Well, how is that different than selling any prepared foods? Peeled carrots or whatever? So what?

It's the over use of plastic when it is not needed.

And personally, I'd never buy a peeled orange.  They are going to be fresher and better in their peel that having someone peel them, expose them to air and then repackage them.  If peeling is a problem - buy clementines; a baby can peel those.

I don't like to peel oranges with me hands. I usually just use a knife instead. No biggie. But, if we want to complain about plastic, then people need to stop drinking out of plastic water bottles by the zillions. I just purchased glass water bottles online and fill them for DD. She loves to drink water and those work great. But, she isn't allowed to take them to school.

I agree.  But obviously the public is rebelling against the notion of taking a food out of its perfect wrapper made by nature and instead having to use plastic.  Water, while still a concern with so many bottles - can't really be carried around without one.

Good points. I am trying to eliminate a lot of plastic. I ditched my rubbermaid and tupperware and got glass pyrex storage containers. I love those. The food looks so much fresher and better in those containers in the fridge. They are a bit heavy but you get used to them.

I like zip lock bags.

It's ridiculous how lazy people have gotten.

Peel your own darn orange.

Huh? It's no different than a 1000 other things we pay people do. If there is a market for it, then there is a market for it. People do a lot of things for convenience. If they eat more oranges as a result, isn't that a good thing?

If a person is too lazy to peel an orange, then do without.

And yes. We all want convenience.

Not saying we dont.

How is peeling your own orange "high and mighty"?

Get help altering clothing, building a shelf, painting a room.

But peeling an orange?

Because you don't churn you own butter. You buy and use a lot of convenience.

I have made my own butter.

What exactly are you arguing here?

Because you've gone from one argument to another.

I don't know whether "lazy" is the right word.

Sure, there are many things people had to do for themselves 100 and 200 years ago. Now many of those things can be done more quickly and easily by machines.

My mother, in 1949, had a washing machine that had a tub and an agitator, and a two-roller "wringer" over the tub. It was a bit easier to use than a wash basin with a scrub board. I spent a lot of time on a step stool helping her wring out the clothes, then hang them up on clothes lines in the basement or (weather permitting) the back yard.

In 1952 she got a Bendix DuoMatic, which was a front load machine that would wash a load of clothes just like a 2016 front loading washing machine, then after spinning the load, it would shift into DRY mode, just like my current gas front-load dryer.

She would put load in to wash before leaving for work, and take it out, dry and ready to fold (or iron) in the evening.

My grandfather had a coal, gravity furnace in the middle of the basement of his house. He spent a LOT of time dealing with coal, to keep his family warm.

Now I set the thermostat and can pretty much forget about the furnace all winter, I just pay the utility bills once a month.

I've never had to feed and maintain a horse so I could get to work.

And I don't have to pump water from the well (like in GF's kitchen) and heat it in a kettle on the wood stove to have hot water for a shower or a bath.

We are living a lot longer and have a much nicer standard of living than my grandparents' generation did.

Does that mean we're lazy? We still (some of us) work long hours, some jobs involve lots of manual labor, many do not.

So if I am coming off a long week off work and coaching and School board meetings and pick up a peeled orange then I am lazy?

No, you're just taking advantage of the available technology.

And if you need a couple of dozen peeled oranges, I can tell you where the people are selling them.

The intersection vendors I've seen were usually working stopped traffic headed toward Manhattan in the mornings.

So maybe they had regular customers who would pick up oranges to take to their offices for coworkers.

It's probably healthier than putting out a bowl full of candy to share.

Unless you are late to work. In that case, bring donuts and peeled oranges and ask for reimbursement.

Lots of things are "lazy". DD and I no longer buy cake mixes because we think it is fairly easy to do a yellow or chocolate cake from scratch. But I don't call that lazy if u do. But even when doing something from scratch you really aren't. I didn't raise the chickens and collect the eggs. I didn't mill my own flour. There are very few things in life someone else also didn't have a hand in ir start.

I imagine they cost more because they are prepeeled. I also would guess it's the oranges that have become soft and they are trying to get a longer shelf life.

These oranges may be organic, but once peeled, they have to have some kind preservative on them.

But that's not remotely the same thing.  You have to "make" butter by churning it.  An orange is already made.

Whole Foods priced them at $6/lbs in my area

Ok.  But they sell peeled carrots.  They sell broccoli and cauliflower cut up in bags.  They sell fruit trays and veggie trays.

All those things would need washing and/or a peeler before being eaten.  An orange needs nothing.  It doesn't need to be washed, and it doesn't need a special tool for peeling.

It isn't a big deal.

I refuse to pay more for sliced or peeled fruit.

I will, on occasion, buy half a watermelon. But that's because we don't eat a whole one.

Yep.

They are sold by the pound.

You can buy 1 or 100.

The difference is edibility on the go.  You need a peeler and a knife to peel and slice an apple.  You need neither to peel and section an orange.  It is perfectly portable and edible with no help.
