Students shocking lack of respect

http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/rooks-students-shocking-lack-of-respect/article_1a9987fe-41fb-5975-83ae-9f7fb8c7ac21.html

I was shocked by this article from my home state. An old classmate of mine posted the article on FB. I have been stunned that there are people advocating this behavior.

I of course, am appalled and making comments in support of showing respect.

What do you think?

I certainly dont advocate for it, and I think it is silly, stupid and disrespectful. However I dont think it is any different that other loudmouth behavior I have seen at kids sport events.

If my kid had shown such disrespect at a state level high school game (or any other game locally), DH and I would have removed that child from the event and that child would have gone home with us immediately.

I would have publicly shamed my child for such terrible behavior.

Those kids should have been thrown out of the game, period.

Where was the SDAA during this event? This behavior reflects poorly on them as well, since they allowed it without punishment.

It would be helpful to see a video instead of this still shot:

Little Wound v Winner Girls Basketball 2016

In this still shot, it does look like a group of students, many wearing orange, are facing away from the other team and the playing floor.

Is that because they're being obnoxious?

Or maybe many of them are climbing up that section to reach the empty seats above?

Not all the ones wearing orange are facing away, and clearly there are a lot of kids facing the playing floor.

Maybe this is a case of "yellow journalism" with someone deliberately misinterpreting something, to make people angry.

I don't think we can tell from this picture. And the one who write the article is either being accurate, or a damn liar.

What exactly did they do that warranted punishment?  The quietly, peacefully, and without a vulgar word made whatever statement they were trying to make.  This is nothing.  I've seen worse.  A LOT worse...

The students turned their backs while the opposing team members were being introduced during a state tournament last week. The girls on the playing floor are the ones being introduced. Yes, they are a Native American team.

Another friend of mine was at that tournament and witnessed the event. He said the article is accurate since he was there and saw it happen. He said it happened at another game earlier in the week as well.

Why would it be appropriate to disrespect a team? Because they are Native?

I have a problem with disrespectful behavior at any sporting event for kids. These are mostly teenagers, but IMHO, they should know better.

Good sportsmanship should be rewarded. In the same token, bad sportsmanship should be punished. JMHO

I personally don't see a lot of bad sportsmanship here.  It's no different (actually less offensive) than cheering against the other team.

How do you reward good sportsmanship?  With cookies and kool-aid?  These are HS kids.  They don't give one crap about being awarded for that...

When do they become responsible for being disrespectful? IMHO, they should have been lead out of the game area.

I just don't get being disrespectful as an opposing team is being announced. They are not yet actually playing the game. After the game starts, cheer or taunt away, but show some respect prior too and after please.

Czech,

Is this attitude common in the area? It's hard for me to fathom.

You don't like or watch sports.  Your kids didn't play sports.  What is there for you to fathom?
