This should be good. Let's start by stating a 19 year old unemployed pot head posted this on my FB page. It was a picture of a receipt where a man ordered $89 worth of food and left a $3 tip. At the bottom of the receipt it said "Sorry I can't leave more but I need gas money." This kid was going on and on and on about how the guy had a right to go out to eat and it's his money and if he doesn't feel like leaving a tip he doesn't have to. I tried to talk to him an explain the waitress might need the money also for gas as that was her actual job and she makes $2.13. He said if you're dumb enough to work for that much money you don't deserve a tip. We went back and forth awhile with me trying to explain the whole process of tipping and then he called me a troll. Which is pretty much the way he handles everyone who doesn't agree with him. Ultimately I told him his right to eat out didn't trump someone else's right to make a legit living. What say ye?

That's what our wait staff make. They depend on tips to make up the rest of their income.

Unless the service was abominable, the MINIMUM tip should be 10%. Adequate/good service deserves 15%. Outstanding service rates 20%.
The guy who went out to eat didn't leave a tip because he needed to put gas in his car. Pick a cheaper place to go out to eat if you can't afford to leave a decent tip for good service. JMO

At $2.13, you might as well not pay them at all. What if it's a slow day, with few customers? They make $20 for the day?

Well, technically if they don't make minimum wage the employer is supposed to make up the difference. But that doesn't always happen.
And I don't know where you live LGS but where I live I rarely ever see wait staff that isn't white. Every once in awhile at the IHOP we get a black server who is super nice. They're Americans and they do the jobs they need to do to not be on welfare or to make money. DN was a waitress for many years. She's very American. So I don't understand the whole they're doing jobs Americans won't do thing.

I didn't realize you have to tip your waitress for good service AND pay her salary.
If you tip properly the waitress will make a decent paycheck. Of course, you shouldn't tip if the service is horrible. But you also have to remember that sometimes it's not the waitresses fault. Example, the kitchen screws up or is shorthanded.

There are always slow shifts. But the staff is typically scheduled so everyone shares in the busy and slow shifts. This low pay doesn't apply to the fast food places, Waitress/Waiter minimum age applies only if food is served to customers at a table. A party of 4 going out to even just a medium level restaurant such as a pub style restaurant will racked up a bill of ~$80 in less than an hour. At 20% that is $16 tip for the waitstaff. That is pretty good pay for a no skill job since a waitperson doesn't serve just one table.

My point is that Americans will do jobs even for $2.13 an hour and that we don't need to pump this country full of illegals.
I waitressed my way through school. At that time, I made $2.11 an hour. But I usually took home $60-$100 each night after a 6-7 hour shift, even after tipping out to the bartender and busboys. So, I was actually making about $12 an hour, sometimes more.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
What you make depends on if douche bags tip correctly or not.

If the waiter doesn't make enough to meet the required amount for that pay period, hours worked, the employer must kick in the remaining amount.
Tips are counted and taxed.
I think, instead of relying on tips, the employer needs to just go on and pay minimum wage.
And yes, the guy paying has every right to leave as much or as little tip as he sees fit.

Yes, I know people who do it. And SOME customers definitely are petty and rude. And not all employers will pay the difference in salary. Sorry, that just doesn't always work. And some restaurants the waitress makes a good tip but she also has to share her tip with the bus boy, hostess, and cooks. So in perfect world yes, the waitress gets her due amount. In the real world that doesn't always happen.
And you can leave whatever tip you want but if you go back and read the OP the guy who didn't leave the tip wrote on the receipt that he didn't leave a tip because he needed to put gas in his car. If you can't afford to be eating out then stay home and eat ramen noodles. Or at least pick a place you can afford.

I think that tip should be figured in when deciding whether one can afford to eat at a particular restaurant. Same as cost of gas and hotels should be figured in when deciding to take a road trip vs. flying. It's the bottom line cost.

I agree. The man in the OP spent $89 on food and left a $3 tip. He could have still gone out to eat but at a less expensive place.

Uh, yeah. The employer is required by law to make sure the employee makes what is equal to minimum wage.
That's the law.
Period.

My question is, if the guy complaining about the tip was unemployed, why is he not getting ripped a new one?

If you're referring to the guy on my FB page he was getting ripped a new one. He was pretty darn angry about it. He feels like stiffing people is okay.

Actually, I think that is the way NJN presented it. Showing the irony in his posts. She right, the kid even goes as far as saying why take such a low paying job.

I always tip at least 20%. More if the service is good or if I am eating off the special menu late night. Friday I tipped $12 off a $15 bill. My breakfast was on special for $2.99 and he did the same work if I had ordered to $15 meal I was going to. Our servers mostly are paid well above minimum wage. My Ex was a server and made $18/HR. His average tips on a slow night were ?150 and up to $400 on a busy night. My brother makes about $80k as a server in a restaurant/club on the Strip.
We always tip 15 to 20%. Usually 20% because I round up. But, it isn't illegal to be a jerk. It isn't illegal to stiff the wait staff. And, i suppose if enough people did that, the restaurants would have to figure out another way to employ their staff and most likely raise prices.
And, if working for $2 an hour, they must be making some pretty good tips
Whats with the Canadasowhite hash tag? Am I offended?
I'm quite certainly it's a result of an argument with the other Canadian on the board.
Good to see you Tig!
Hi! Its good to be seen! Life has had me by the tiger-tail for the last few months but things seem to be letting up now. I've been managing a full time job, two practicums, a thesis and school, and it will all come to a screeching halt on April 30th. I just have to hold on till then!
I think that hashtag should be removed. Regardless of it's origin, as a standalone hashtag it's in violation of the racial speech rules of this board. To come in and see it was shocking. Especially to not have the context. I figured there was backstory, and I guessed (apparently rather accurately what it was) but that doesn't make it okay for it to be a stand alone thing. It's icky.
