We have some crazy environmental laws, too, about removing trees. We must leave a percentage of canopy and plant something it its place. We had to fork out several thousands of dollars to the county before getting our pool done which pertained only to tree removal. After it was all finished, they had to inspect to make sure we complied with the conservation plan. We did, and our money was refunded.
years ago I had 26 taken down in my yard, these last two are tricky to take down. They are probably 30+ years old so big and they are next to the electrical lines. No easy task to take down. I would love them to come down and I would replace with cherry trees or something else pretty.
I just spent an hour raking the acorns that fell last fall. Just one part of the year where I have very large oaks. DD and her friend put the piles I raked into the wheel barrow. It was full when we were done, had to be 60 pounds of those suckers! My arms are sore. Going to the store and getting a bottle of wine.
Did you know acorns can be turned into flour and eaten?
I want to try it.
I heard they were poisonous.
If not prepared properly, they are.

There are three or four in our yard, more in the neighborhood.
The kids and I have done about everything with them except eat them.
Painted them, played with them, decorated with them.

You're going to need a professional.
Oh I know and it will cost about 10K which is why they are still standing.

Have you talked to the power company? They might want to cut back the parts of the trees that could interfere with their power lines.
Here they do that for free, usually without even asking first.

In 1993, a blizzard shut down everything from Kentucky to below Atlanta.
Here in my town, it was 2-6 foot deep and in drifts of 8-10 feet.
90% were without power, and about that without water.
Cell phones didn't work.
Where I was, we had a single, battery operated radio and the guy at the station was there for 6 days before he could get out.
Emergency response was zero.
We had to wait for a single plow to make its way here from somewhere up north.
Where ever you were when it started, that is where you stayed.
People died, my uncle had a heart attack the morning of the 14th. The ambulance couldn't get out of the firestation. He laid on the pool table at the back of the house for 5 days. My aunt, cousins had to wrap him in sheets and put him in the back of the truck and take him to the funeral home themselves.
He was just one of many.
Then, of course 9 months after the blizzard, there was an abundance of new babies.

It was, but horrible but my cousin said she was thankful for that time. She said they all were at peace with it all after everything was said and done.
It seemed like they all moved on a little better.

Oh my, the Bulldogs are giving me palpitations. They were one of the last teams announced for the tournament. So happy they made it, now I can fully enjoy my 4 days of basketball.

Good idea, Ed. I think I will call them. This time of year they are gearing up to do trimming. Maybe I could get on their list.

Spray paint the acorns silver or gold and put them in a clear vessel with a candle on top and use them to decorate for fall. You can also just leave them "naked" and use them the same way. It looks really cute.

We've make "Jacko lanterns" with them.
Painted them different colors for "Christmas lights".
They make great Chinese checkers.
Hot glue them into a wreath.
Or just gather them into bowls for the squirrels.
