On the tipping thread, Gaga stated that this hashtag is a spin off of the Oscars So White campaign which was designed to bring awareness to huge amounts of racism in the Oscars Awards. To change Oscars to Canada suggests that - by her own logic - she is accusing Canada as a whole of being racist, which is untrue. It is the classification of an entire nation as racist that makes it hate speech. And offensive to me as a Canadian. And as an individual I have to stand up against hate speech and racism. Especially when it is disguised as a joke.
Tig,
You have explained your position logically & politely. I hope the Mods listen.

And, using the main board to debate the mods and attack a poster is not something that is usually done on any board.
Mods are not being debated. Racism and hate speech is. Are you feeling attacked? I don't see anyone attacking you - I'm not doing it. I don't see anyone attacking me either. In fact, this thread is quite civil. I did say you responded in a rude manner on the other thread. But that's a fact that others can see for themselves. (and actual fact - not a racist or hate speech based one . . . )
Whining to the mods is pretty rude.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Racism and hate speech should be brought into the open. It should not be hidden or allowed to hide in the shadows.

A lot of drama over a hashtag. Liberals tell us to ignore what we don't like. To turn the channel, to not listen, to understand others have free speech rights. On the other hands conservatives are told to they must cave in to the demands. So, this had absolutely NOTHING to do with you Tig other than your choosing to find some offense there as if that pertained to you. But, it is wrong to do this on the message board so I think you should take it up via PM with the mods. I will change it but it is clearly not right for YOU to attack my statement and imply i am a "racist" either. i would hope that the future of this board is not a bunch of new threads complaining about whatever we don't like about certain posters. But, i have things to do so, i will not engage you any further.

Whew. I'm pretty sure I tried that an hour ago! This board is like a time warp!
I go into one meeting and all hell breaks loose. I come back to a 2 page thread, PMs up the wazoo, what the hell, people - it's not Friday!
Thank you, Gaga, for changing your signature line. While I understand the political statement being made, it did offend one of our members. The hashtag itself would not be hate speech as the point was to point out racism. Tig, as you said yourself - "Racism and hate speech should be brought into the open. It should not be hidden or allowed to hide in the shadows." The U.S. is not the only country with a racism problem, and while Vancouver is more tolerant, the way the aboriginal population in Canada is treated is terrible in some areas, and your black to white ratios in prison are more skewed than the U.S. per capita.
HOWEVER, since we all know it was posted in response to one particular Canadian who seems to hate America but can't stay away, the purpose behind the hashtag was not altogether altruistic and noble, now was it? So let's not bring it back.
Now, a few clarifications. This should most definitely been handled via PM - it did not require it's own thread. It will now be closed. Two wrongs don't make a right, and a thread with no other purpose than to attack another poster - for whatever reason - is not ok.
I do not want anyone thinking this issue has opened the door for censored speech. This topic is now closed, not to be re-opened. Thank you and good night.
