Dear Harriette: You break it you bought it!

DEAR HARRIETTE: I was in an incredibly small store recently, and as I turned, my ponytail knocked a trinket off the shelf and broke it. The owner and I proceeded to have a bit of an argument after this because there was no "You Break It, You Buy It" sign hung in this minuscule store. We ended up compromising, and I paid for 50 percent of the item. I still think this was unjust. If storekeepers set up their stores like this, it should not be my responsibility to pay for the items I damage by accident. Should I not have put up a fight? I clearly broke this by accident. -- Cramped Spaces, Racine, Wisconsin

DEAR CRAMPED SPACES: It's too bad that you got caught in that. I think it was reasonable for you to put up a bit of a fight about paying for the broken item given the circumstances, but it was also fair that you came to a compromise.

In the future, I recommend that you avoid going into any retail space that looks too cramped for comfort, as it probably is!

That seems fair. A shop owner also has a responsibility not to stack a lot of breakable items so close together that people can't browse them.

But how do you determine that? Other people undoubtedly shop there with no issues. Just because she couldn't isn't some sort of standard.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I accidentally broke a Christmas ornament at hobby lobby. I offered to pay for it but they refused.

I've never broken anything at a store. I was in antique store with my mom years ago, turned around and my purse knocked over a bunch of glass breakables. It was intense hold your breath moment but thankfully nothing broke.

Well, the pony tail? Long, thick thing? Was she flinging it around?

Never heard of any store actually holding anyone to it.

When i worked at Opryland, that was their policy. I never could bring myself to actually charge someone...

Well, i think that if you have a lot of stacked glass and small aisles then that may happen. And, i doubt most businesses would charge the customer.

I could definitely see a business doing it if a parent was not watching their child.

I have accidentally broken items in stores.
I have always apologized profusely and offered to pay. Sometimes they accept, sometimes they don't.

We have some really small "antique" stores here with tons of glass stuff. I don't go in them. Not because I'm clumsy but I carry a big purse and I have knocked stuff over before. I've never broken anything though. Over stuffed racks of clothes or bins of stuffed animals, I can turn and one will catch on my purse and fall over. I think it's 50/50. The store needs to be responsible about how they stock goods and people need to be careful in stores. Now if your little brat is running around knocking things over we got another story altogether.
