What a horrible man. That poor girl. I hope he did no permanent damage to her self confidence.

Our 4th grade teacher told one of my closest friends that she was a fat ugly little girl. She has a lovely family & a great career but she still remembers the teacher saying it.

This is one of the parts that hit me as a little strange:

After seeing the recording, Shaniaya’s mother went directly to school officials, but no actions were taken. It was only when family lawyer Ben Windham threatened to sue the teacher and the school, Hunter resigned.

Schools seem to be so quick to condemn what students wear, say, do, etc (from what I have read in other articles on this board) but not so quick when a teacher is involved? Wonder if there is more to this than is in the story.

No. NO, you really can't understand a teacher telling a female student all she is good for is getting pregnant and having babies. No, you can't really understand a TEACHER, who is supposed to be an example to kids, having a tantrum and insulting a student in such a manner. If he was burned out, he should have quit BEFORE something like this happened. There is no excuse.

I have been a teacher, and I never yelled at kids calling them stupid. And as an attorney, I've volunteered as a mock trial coach at the high school for several years. I have no problem with teenagers. You just have to remember they are people.

I don't care how easy or hard it is. If you work with children, you are subject to higher standards of behavior. If you can't contain your ire enough not to verbally abuse the kids in your class, then quit and go find a different job. It's not a difficult concept. Really. And he should have been fired, when the issue was first brought to the school's attention. He shouldn't have been allowed to resign.

I had a friend in college that had a hard time reading, writing and retaining information. Schoolwork was hard for her. We studied together, and I would proofread and help out with her papers. One day she was extremely frustrated, she couldn't master a paper she was trying to write, and I kept suggesting she hse words she didn't understand (misconception is the only one I remember, but they were all common words.)
Anyways at one point she just throws her hands up amd says "My guidance counselor was right, I am just too stupid to go to college, I should have just stayed home and worked at Wallmsrt."
That is what her GUIDANCE COUNSELOR told her to do. To DROP OUT of highschool, and go work someplace for minimum wage for the rest of her life.
I was horrified. Who does that??

She is an illustrator in DC. I think she works for a small animation studio, nothing bug or fancy but she loves it.

My mother has been a teacher for nearly 40 years. She has lots of friends that are teachers. She has not, and I know of none of her friends who have acted like this. Do they think it? Sure. Do they say it to the kid? No.

And you want to talk salary as an excuse? They are in a depressed rural district. As long as my mother has been teaching, and I make more money than she does. It's not about money, it's about being a decent human being.

This was a High School teacher.

Not college.

Don't we want our children, to get through High School, and learn as much as they can...even if they don't go on to college?

This poor excuse for a teacher, needs to find a new line of work. furious

It said she was recording the entire lesson, perhaps because of her vision problem.
