WASHINGTON, D.C.— Republican frontrunner Donald Trump said Monday that his daughter Ivanka is about to have a “beautiful Jewish baby” while affirming his support for Israel.

Speaking at a conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington, D.C., Trump pointed out that his own grandchild will be Jewish.

“I’ve received some of my greatest honors from Israel. My father before me. Incredible. My daughter Ivanka is about to have a beautiful Jewish baby. In fact, it could be happening right now which would be very nice as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said.

Ivanka is due to give birth any day now. Her husband, Jared Kushner, is Jewish, and Ivanka Trump converted to the Jewish faith.

Trump earned an ecstatic response at the AIPAC gathering, where he promised not to “pander” about Israel like all-talk and no-action politicians.  Trump said of a potential Israeli-Palestinian peace deal:

President Obama thinks that applying pressure to Israel will force the issue, but it’s exactly the opposite that happens. Already half of the population of Palestine has been taken over by the Palestinian ISIS in Hamas and the other half refuses to confront the first half, so it’s a very difficult situation that’s never going to get solved unless you have great leadership right here in the United States. We’ll get it solved, one way or the other. We will get it solved.

“We will move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem,” Trump said to a massive semi-standing ovation.

Many of the anti-Trump protesters outside the event in Chinatown were also opposed to AIPAC and carried signs or made chants for a free Palestine or railed against America funding “Israel’s crime.”

One protester held a sign that read “Bern #AIPAC.”

About Matrilineal Descent

Many people have asked me why traditional Judaism uses matrilineal descent to determine Jewish status, when in all other things (tribal affiliation, priestly status, royalty, etc.) we use patrilineal descent.

The Torah does not specifically state anywhere that matrilineal descent should be used; however, there are several passages in the Torah where it is understood that the child of a Jewish woman and a non-Jewish man is a Jew, and several other passages where it is understood that the child of a non-Jewish woman and a Jewish man is not a Jew.

In Deuteronomy 7:1-5, in expressing the prohibition against intermarriage, G-d says "he [i.e., the non-Jewish male spouse] will cause your child to turn away from Me and they will worship the gods of others." No such concern is expressed about the child of a non-Jewish female spouse. From this, we infer that the child of a non-Jewish male spouse is Jewish (and can therefore be turned away from Judaism), but the child of a non-Jewish female spouse is not Jewish (and therefore turning away is not an issue).

Leviticus 24:10 speaks of the son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian man as being "among the community of Israel" (i.e., a Jew).

On the other hand, in Ezra 10:2-3, the Jews returning to Israel vowed to put aside their non-Jewish wives and the children born to those wives. They could not have put aside those children if those children were Jews.

Why do you think the babies will have to convert later?

Both parents are Jewish, one by birth the other by conversion.

Hey, i am just saying. One of my girlfriends married a Jewish man. And, she is the one who told me that technically her kids weren't Jewish because they were not born of a Jewish mother. She converted and is raising her kids Jewish. I don't care either way. Just pointing out this is their rules.

An honest question here; My DH's grandmother on his mother's side was born to two Jewish parents who converted to Christianity, is he still Jewish?

Okay, the kids are fine to be called Jewish under these circumstances. They are being raised Jewish and both parents are Jewish, so as far as religion goes they are totally fine being called Jewish. Culturally, they are also Jewish. Where it gets sticky and the mother's heritage comes into play is if the kids were to want to obtain citizenship to Isreal. If you are born to a mother who can trace her heritage back to the Jewish people it is quite easy to obtain dual citizenship. I have heard recently that they are considering lifting the rules and allowing even those born to a Jewish father the same.

If he were to convert and wanted to obtain citizenship, as long as he could show that he has a direct maternal line to the Jewish people in Israel (often people are able to trace it back to a distant family member buried in a Jewish plot in Israel) it would probably be doable.

He does have a direct maternal line, but they immigrated from Poland to America in the 1880's.

I'm not sure a line to Israel itself can be proved.

They just need it go be proven so many generations back, it's probably doable. My family can from the eastern block.

Interesting.

I don't think he wants to prove his heritage to Israel, but he doesn't deny his lineage either. I find it fascinating.

Oh, I always heard that a converted mother did not make the babies Jewish, regardless of the father or how they were raised. I always heard that they had to convert on their own.
