I am watching Nancy Grace and she is talking of a crime with no signs of "forced entry". Well, do you have your doors locked at all times? In the town I grew up we never locked our doors. Heck in the summer, we left the main door open and just the screen door shut at night since it allowed air in. My parents never locked their cars. It was odd to me when i met DH because he was a city boy and he constantly was locking the doors.
Yep. I grew up not locking things as diligently, but now everything gets locked. I will leave windows open with just the screen in the summer, but not the front door.
Yes but only since I lived in a city. My whole life I never locked a door. I moved away and we really had too. I moved back and now it's just such a habit I can't seem to break it. It's weird how city life can change certain things in your attitude.

One time, i left my car unlocked and i had an envelope full of Christmas money literally sitting on the front passenger seat.
Haha. When we first moved here from CA. my mom was shocked when she went in to a gas station to pay for gas and the owner was in the back and told her to just leave the money on the counter. So trusting. Also seeing people not only leave their keys in the car, but with the car running (this was before remote start)!
Oh heck yeah. I used to leave the car unlocked and running and just run it to the post office or whatever. I don't do that now but it didn't seem like a big deal. When i first got my minivan and it had power doors, I took the kids to the mall. And, when we came out, i saw that i forgot to close the power door and the side door was open the whole time, lol.

I, too, grew up in the era of open houses, unlocked cars, etc. Now, we keep the doors to the house and to the car locked at all times, unless we are going in or out of course.... Too many strange things happening - even here in Japan.
During the day when we're home no. When it gets dark yes. And yes, we lock them when we leave and at night.

I don't remember grandma and grandpa having actual locks on the door.
They had hook and eyes on the screens but that was it.
Growing up, our house key and my granny's house key was the same. Skeleton keys.
And if you didn't have it just bend the end of hanger.
At night, we locked the door, turned the key sideways and left it in the door.
But if you stuck a hanger or something in there and moved it around just right you could knock it out and unlock the door.

No, I don't usually lock my doors or windows, and I live in a huge city
Since Sushi the Destroyer came to live with me, the front door is usually locked because he knows how to open the door to escape. He jumps on the side board and swings from the doorknob until it opens.
That being said, I often leave the keys in the front door lock. On the outside.
It drives my son crazy.
"Mom!! You forgot the keys in the front door again!!"
I did have an intruder try to make his way in through the unlocked bathroom window. I jumped, naked, out of the bathtub, armed with a bar of soap, to confront the interloper.
It was a raccoon. He was not impressed.

Everyone around here is armed. No one messes with anyone.

You will not get inside my house even without the doors being unlocked. Layla will eat you alive. Literally. What Layla doesn't eat Carlee will finish up. Hemi will be somewhere around.

One time when my son was in middle school, he got off the bus and came home and neither DH or I was home. He forgot his key. He had to poop, so he actually busted down the door into the basement. It scared him so much that he wound up running down to my mom's apt which was like a block or two away. And, DH and i didn't even notice that the door frame was busted until much later and we saw it and said 'I wonder how that happened"? We just thought it cracked on it's own. I never did find out that story until much later! LOL!

My alarm chimes every time a door opens. Wind blew the basement door open once and DH and I just looked at each other, we were the only ones in the house and the kids were at school or something. DH was ready to shoot that wind if it came up the stairs. But, after a few minutes, we realized it was nothing because the dog didn't bark.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I used to come home from school to an empty house and the front door standing wide open.
We didn't have screen doors or storm doors.
Mom would go out the back door and lock it when leaving and forget the front door was open.
And the house had to old windows. You know the ones that lifted and was very easy to climb in and out?
Left them open a lot too.
This house, we've come home to the doors open, windows open.
It has never been a problem.
I know all it takes is one time.
But we've been blessed so far.
Thank God.

Ok, next question. What about home security? I had thought of getting some type of wireless set up with alarm thing.
No way. They all come with "remote monitoring". Which means anyone with the company or who knows how to hack the system, can hear what is happening in your home.
Call me paranoid if you want.
But we ain't doing that.

No, they don't all come with remote monitoring. You can buy a system which is just basically an alarm system that rings in the house. You dont have to get one linked.

We have a couple of those.
It's called Monster and Spot.

It depends on where we have lived. When we lived in Ohio and Indiana we locked everything all the time. No exceptions. Here though, we don't. We went away for 3-4 days and left the front door partially open by accident. Nothing was touched. Because we live on campus we don't have anyone here who doesn't belong. It's a school so strangers are noticed right away and security stops them. We joke frequently about having to learn how to behave in society when we leave here.

I try to remember to lock the doors at night. Most times I remember. I've started keeping the front door locked when I'm home on weekends. We constantly have people coming around knocking on the door selling crap. It makes me jump every time they knock since one time someone tried the door knob. Luckily it happened to still be locked. I don't know if they intended to come in but it really freaked me out.
I don't lock my car ever. If they want in they will just break the window.
I always lock my doors, whether at home or not. I even lock them when I have to step to the curb 150 feet away to place my trash for pickup.
There have been two attempted break-ins of my apartment unit in the past, so locking up is a no-brainer for me. When I had a car, I kept it locked as well. No one really tried to steal it, though, as most people were not interested in an old Chevy Celebrity.

Do you have a garage? And if so, is the opener in the car?

Yes & yes but the interior door is always locked. If not it causes some sort of air build up & the door flies open on it's own. The first time it happened I almost had a heart attack. I thought someone kicked the door open.
If anyone wants to steal the crap in my garage they can have it.
I once heard noises downstairs and the meter reader was in the kitchen, reading the meter.
*Why didn't you knock??*
*I did! I thought I heard you say to come in!* (it was probably the cat, hollering something or other)
I never locked my doors until I married G. He's been a victim of breakins a few times. We have a security system. Our garage door openers are in the cars, but the cars are in the garage. So if they have made it that far, they have no need for the openers.

I had a security system but I never set the alarm. I was worried more about fire. The stupid thing malfunctioned & wouldn't stop shrieking. The monitoring people couldn't shut it down so I ripped it off the wall & cancelled the service.

Good thing I didn't shoot the poor man.
Your meters are in the house? Ours are all outside & they just shine a red beam from the sidewalk to read it.

This was a long time ago. The SmartMeters are outside now.

I'm almost certain here that it's illegal to have a meter reader in your house. I watch enough house flipping shows to know that that is a red flag!
I don't think our meter readers even get out of the car.

Yes, but that's Canada. They would probably get buried in snow 6 months out of the year.

We lock the doors to the car. The house is usually unlocked if we are home.
Front door is usually locked. Screen door in front is always locked, years of habit. GMom kept it locked too. There are a lot of scams here where they will knock on doors and try to open them. I just open the jalousie window to talk to the door to door people. Back door is the one we use. Anyone familiar with us will also use the back door. Right now, I am home alone with the regular door open and the screen door windows are open. But one neighboring house (three apartments) has been having a lot of in and out activity daily (I am thinking possible drug dealings om smaller scale) so I lock the screen doors.
