Opinions welcome. Except if you think we should repaint, DH already said he's not redoing it, lol.

We are in the middle of painting right now and my house is torn apart, so I can't post a picture of how everything is normally set up.

I need help deciding what type of window treatment to get for the sliding door and the bay window in the kitchen (kitchen is not repainted yet, but will be soon).

The slider gets a lot of light and it is used a lot. Our dogs and kids go in and out about 5,000 times a day, so functional over pretty or decorative.

Here is the color we are painting in the living room- it looks a little more blue tinted than we thought it would. This picture shows how the color really looks more than the other pictures I'm posting. And you can see the color of our furniture in this picture.

Spoiler

Here is the sliding door in question

Spoiler

Here is the kitchen window. I am undecided if we will paint this wall the same color as the sliding door wall or the accent color.

Spoiler

Obviously those curtains wont match, but I don't know if I should do a different style or just get some new fabric and do the same thing as I have now.

Here are what the colors look like as samples on our wall- left (Sherwin Williams Cool Slate) is the main color that is in the living room already, right (SWs Escape Grey) is what will be an accent color.

Spoiler

Here is an idea I like for the slider. It is a sliding shutter- but I don't know if I can even get anything like this here, plus it might be a pain to keep clean.

Spoiler

Here's a curtain, I'm not sure if I should be looking for something with more color though

Spoiler

Sorry that got long quick.

Get a set of Husker posters. There are a couple stadium shots that are really nice. Of course, a Tommy Frazier portrait is a must, along with Tom Osborne.

I think the curtain is pretty but split like that isn't functional for opening & closing the door.

My personal preference for sliders is Hunter Douglas Luminette but they are expensive.

ETA:  I love the sliding shutter.

I will have to get some estimates to see if it's even in our budget.

I LOVE the shutters. My goal is to have every window and door to have plantation blinds...

All my windows except the kitchen have wide white fake wood plantation blinds. The previous owners had them installed. There are a lot of windows so I can't imagine the cost. They look really nice. The "formal living room" otherwise known as wasted space has really pretty decorative curtains that they also had custom made over the blinds.

I think the difference is the blinds have strings so you can raise & lower them as well as open & close them.   I rarely raise mine because they are so heavy I'm afraid I'll pull them out of the window casing.

That sounds like my blinds. I just open them, not raise them.

Shutters...I meant shutters.  I have the blinds in my bathroom, but I want the shutters in the rest of the house...

We have plantation shutters all over the house. One of the best things about them is that they are easy to clean.
Another vote for the shutters. And maybe a valance at the top if you want to decorate a little more.

Spoiler
My MIL made these for Bunny's room. We're going to paint the walls blue someday.

Yep.  We did three windows and it cost a fortune.

NAOW - I like the curtains you had above. I like curtains, they add warmth and texture. However, b/c there are doors there, you are going to want curtains that are easier to slide open and closed. Grommet top curtains will work better to slide open and closed.

Like this -

Because of the heavy use of the sliding doors, I'd make a valance to match the kitchen valance, but hang it so it only reaches the top of the door.
On either side of the door, I'd make narrow drapes, hanging from the same rod as the valance, gathered, and anchored by another rod at the floor.
This way, the slider is "framed", but nothing is loose and likely to be caught in the door.
While the slider shutters look nice, I'm not sure they would withstand dogs and kids, since they are only attached at the top.

I love the shutters. Since you get sun through the sliders, your flooring in that room will fade SIGNIFICANTLY. Although vertical blinds or roll downs are practical they are so typical and just don't enhance a room. Those shutters will be more convenient to slide than opening any type of blind. Regardless of the price you should get them. Oh and buy me some too!

I like the way shutters look but I can't do them. I just can't. Our house growing up in the 70's had them and as nice as they look, they scream 1970 to me. Personal preference.

I had to grow up with shutter cleaning duties. I will never ever EVER ever have shutters on any of my doors. Hate them with a passion. Curtains would be my vote.

I am worried about that cheerios. I hate cleaning our blinds already. Dh likes the shutter, but we are going to go to a few stores this weekend to look at curtains in person.

There are a lot of very stylish and cute curtains now a days. Styles that probably will really make the space pop. Personally I like the style posted by LL. :)

Two words. Hunter Douglas. They have so many choices you won't be able to decide although I guess that's the point of this thread...lol

Curtains are a whole lot easier to change when you get tired of them.

True, but a good quality shutter one never tires of.
