Listening to the news Trump was criticized for saying if abortion was made illegal that the women having abortions should be punished.  He has since walked back the statement that the doctors should be punished not the women, the women are victims as well.  I guess this is to be inline with the pro life groups.  Really? Do people here feel that the women should not be punished only the doctors?

I can't believe no one posted this yet.

And I have never heard the phrase "walked back" in terms of a statement.

Whoa wait. He was asked, if it were illegal, should women be punished, the lib media wasn't giving the context. Of course law breakers should face consequences.

But, in THIS case, that was NOT the impression I got from listening to him blather on. It wasn't part of a "tough on crime" stance.

And then his campaign was forced into damage control.

 Yeah.

What was wrong with what I posted or what was in the media?  It was clear that the question was about if abortion was made illegal.

Trump doesn't really care about abortion. He's just trying to tow the republican line.

Exactly.  I'm actually a little surprised he didn't just bluntly say he doesn't care.  There are more important issues at hand.  I would give him a big high-five if he did.  I am so sick of abortion being part of the campaigns.

I don't think he cares all that much about this issue. That's why the evangelicals support Cruz.

Abortion is just one thing that needs to go back to the states authority.

Abortion is not a presidential issue. It's between the states and the Supreme Court. I'm so sick of hearing about it in federal elections.

Me, too.

So many things the federal government has no business messing with.

I am too.  Unless I'm missing something, the Supreme Court has spoken, and unless another case comes all the way up which would overturn Roe, it's not going to change.  Why do people buy this lib crap?  I think Trump should have been better prepared for the interview, however, and should not have given so much of his time to one of the most liberal reporters who as every one knows, has a bone to pick with Trump already.

I agree that it's really not an issue in general for federal elections--but I would not be in favor of some states making it illegal and others not.

In general terms, if it's a crime in one state it should be a crime in all. At least any crime that jail time would be a possible punishment.

If a state enacts a law that contradicts Roe, it will be thrown out.

That's a bit of a matter of opinion, though.  Many states have enacted laws to place limits on abortion.  The pro-death crowd thinks they all contradict Roe, the pro-life crowd thinks none of them do.

The he court is mixed--and can change over time.  It will be decidedly more unfavorable to such laws with Scalia gone.

That was what the criticism was, that the first response was not the republican line.  The line is not to punish the women.

Seeing arguments here that surprised me. I would think the line was if it is illegal both parties would be punished.

That is what I think.   But I think the doctors should be punished more harshly.  It can't happen without the doctors and the doctors are held to higher standards - they require education and licensing.

Saying that you want to have consequences for illegal acts is not the same thing as saying you want to make things illegal.

What is the point of having laws if there are no consequences for breaking them?

All he does is toe the Republican line.
I don't think he believes any of it.
He was pro-choice earlier, and supported Planned Parenthood.
He claimed to be a member of a church, but the church denied it.
He claimed bringing jobs back to America is important to him, yet had his clothing line made in Mexico and China.I guess there are no sewing machines in the USA.

So this is not about Trump per se. but I need to say that I had a heart to heart with DD last night. I was watching the NJ Trump rally and DD told me that she knows of girls in school that had abortions and such. Abortion topic came up in the rally briefly. This was a very hard conversation. I remember being 15 and selfish. But I did tell her that adoption is always an option and that some infertile couple will be so happy plus I told her that taking away abortion is not taking female rights away but is also giving those female babies rights. I hope my statements take.

It is a hard subject. I remember being her age and a couple of my friends had had them as well. I don't judge, but I know I couldn't do it. I made sure I went on the pill before I became active. And as a benefit it gave me easier periods without cramping so it was a win-win.

To me it boils down to one thing. Is it a baby and human being or it is not? If it is, then it really doesnt' matter the circumstances of how that human being got there. A baby that is the byproduct of rape or incest is a human being as well as wanted child. However, if abortion were limited to those instances, then that would really minimize the amount of abortions that are happening.

At one time it was and it was a sobering hard decision, at least from the stories from those who had gone through it, now there are late terms abortions with state legislators applauding, smiling and giving high fives to each other for passing a bill to terminate a baby up to birth. Some wackos even said a mother should be able to decide to let her newborn baby die a few days after birth. I remember when they said late term will never happen, close to being born will never happen.

Some are promoting “shout out your abortion” and other absurd slogans like it’s a wonderful thing. These same people will protect tooth n nail or a baby eagle before hatching and after but, couldn’t careless if a innocent unborn baby is killed, yet those who are pro life are called hitlers...

In my upbringing, abortion was never an option. Period.

If you had sex, then you made the choice of taking on all responsibility of that.

Rape and incest, while everyone knew it could, and did happen, was so rare, it wasn't even considered.

I raised my kids with the same understanding.

I was taught, and I taught my kids, that your body is your responsibility. You have the sole right and responsibility to care for it, make decisions about your life, and understand any repercussions or consequences were your own to bear.

Talking to kids about sex, reproduction, consequences, abortion, any of it, is difficult, but we have to do it.

If this is true, why are we fighting about laws? Shouldn't laws be kept out of it and individuals be free to make their own decisions about their own life? (my views on abortion aside - curious about how supporting or fighing for laws = sole right and responsibility)

Who is going to speak, for the unborn children?

They have no voice.

They need laws, to protect them.

JMHO.

Tig once you introduce a baby into your body it is no longer just "your" body it is your baby's body as well.  Just because having a baby may be inconvenient for you (collective you) does not justify killing another human.

True - but others have other views.  By making a law that women cannot choose abortion are we not taking away their 'sole right and responsibility'?

If this is true, why are we fighting about laws? Shouldn't laws be kept out of it and individuals be free to make their own decisions about their own life? (my views on abortion aside - curious about how supporting or fighing for laws = sole right and responsibility)

No. Make them, responsible.

Once you make the choice, to get pregnant...now, you have another life, on board.

And, that baby has a right, to life.

There should never be an option, for murder.

That's what abortion is. Murder, of a child, who has no voice.

It's so sad, that some folks, can find a way to justify it.

It makes me sad.cry

No. If a person is truly self responsible, then they will take the steps prevent pregnancy.

So, by that logic, if they do not prevent pregnancy they lose their rights and responsibilities and the ability to make decisions about their lives?
