TOPIC: Mother, 32, charged with neglect for 'punishing kids for missing the bus as she drove in front of them while they walked
This was not NEGLECT. Neglect because mom "might not have been able to reach them in time to avoid something happening" is DUMB. Otherwise, letting your kid play on the other side of the playground, or even in the outfield would qualify as neglect.
NEGLECT is when kids are not provided the basics of food, clothing, shelter, education, and supervision. She was THERE and supervising. She doesn't have to be in REACH. The nanny government strikes again.
How OLD were the kids?
flan
SCHOOL AGE. Which is old enough to walk to school with mother supervising.
That COULD mean 5 and 7. Kids mature at different rates. Factor in the length of the walk...3 1/2 miles...
flan
So what? That's old enough to walk to school when mom could see them.

I've only worked with children for 36 years. WTH do I know?
flan
Well for someone who worked with kids for 36 years you should know that most if not all of them are capable of walking 3 miles but not if mommy has a fit because there could be danger. Guess what. There's danger in doing anything so when do YOU let them grow up?

I see so many young adults that are soft and can't figure anything out. And some of the parents s are my age. We were raised different so I don't get it. We are raising a generation on ninnies.

But THIS is the "lesson" those kids were ultimately taught:
Palmer also didn't have a valid driver's license and since she wasn't allowed to drive the children to school, her husband Brandon and his father, Douglas Palmer were called.
When the two men arrived, officers asked them for a valid driver's license.
Douglas Palmer refused and began to argue with officers.
Ladd said Douglas Palmer then grabbed at his waist, where the officer said he saw a fixed-blade knife in a sheath and after a struggle ensued, he was disarmed and arrested, according to the Free Press.
That's not the issue we're discussing. We're discussing whether having your kids walk to school is neglect. Because, otherwise, none of the rest would have happened at all.

Because the cops interfered with her perfectly legal parenting...

And there was NO REASON to ask for the FIL's ID. None. We don't live in a police state, he had every right to refuse. Police need PROBABLE CAUSE for that kind of thing.

We are discussing the OP. And I have ALREADY given you several factors that should influence a parent's decision.
So the mother decided this was what she wanted the kids to do. Why should the police be involved and what the hell do you care? You're not their mother and you keep saying it's up to the parents.

And just maybe, she took all of those factors into consideration and decided that for HER KIDS, this was entirely appropriate. You don't get to decide for another parent, isn't that what you say? The kids were not hurt and would have been just fine if some cops hadn't been nebschitts and interfered with parenting.

So? She was there, and she decided it was the best decision for her children.

So one bad decision that has nothing to do with parenting completely negates the right to make parenting decisions?

I've got to go renew my license this week. They expired in February.
But.
Georgia law says I got up to two years.
I did drive on an expired license for almost 3 years. I didn't realize it was expired at the time.
This was HER choice. She made this decision.
While I might have chosen another method, this was her method.
There is WAY too much interference from outside sources when raising kids.
If the outside would back off, we'd all be better off.

That street doesn't look horrible either. Good gravy they would have been fine. Back in the day we would walk and ride our bikes all over creation and we survived.
Wow, a bunch of interfering ninnies, IMHO.
The kids were fine and never in danger. What the hell is wrong with allowing a parent to parent. Oh, wait... it will offend the perpetually offended morons that have invaded the logical world. These same morons are complaining that kids don't get enough exercise too.
Kids here walk a mile or more to and from school daily. What the heck is wrong with that? Nothing.

I might not let my kid walk on that crazy road either Ohfour but that doesn't look like where they were walking at all. All I can say is when my daughter was a kid if you were closer than 1.5 miles there was no bus. Now the bus will pick you up if you live next door. Although at least most of the parents close by walk their children to school most days.

The street in the op had even more room to walk although there weren't sidewalks. Don't you know our children can now no longer navigate the streets they live on. They also can't play outside alone, go to the park by themselves even though it's 2 blocks away. Now if your kid isn't watched over every minute of their day SOMETHING BAD MIGHT HAPPEN. That is freaking ridiculous!!!!!!!!

I was just pointing out that i would not let my 5 year old walk on a street less than .10 of a mile from my house. And you can't walk in the yards. Most of the people in that street have dogs...

But that is YOUR decision--and this parent should have every right to make her own decision regarding what streets she might let her children walk on.

I actually agree with flan on that (gasp) (omg husker too) but I stand behind it. Each circumstance is different but I won't judge that mother for trying to give a lesson. Even if she isn't perfect like some people would like to believe they are.

Totally agree. Just pointing out that 3 miles to school may not be as safe a trip as some people would like to believe.

But whether it is or isn't should not be our call--nor should it be a police matter.

Now that i will disagree with. Parents have children remived from their care all the time. If a toddler is playing in the cul de sac at midnight by himself, and is in no immediate danger, the cops should atill be called. And he should probably be removed from the home.

No. That isn't the case here. These were school age children. Their parent was there.
