The family of a 12-year-old Muslim student is demanding that a teacher be fired after she allegedly called him a 'terrorist' in front of his class.
Waleed Abushaaban was watching a movie with his class at First Colony Middle School in Houston, Texas, when it is claimed his teacher called him the offensive term.
Waleed explained to KHOU that he was laughing at the comedy, Bend It Like Beckham, when the teacher said, 'I wouldn't be laughing if I was you'.

His father Malek Abushaaban (pictured) said his son is just as 'American as anybody else' as he calls for the permanent dismissal of the teacher
When he asked her why, she said 'because we all think you're a terrorist'.
The teacher's name has not been released.
The class, who had been watching the film after their STAAR tests, started making fun of Waleed after the alleged nasty comment, according to ABC 13.
Waleed said the students made jokes with some saying 'oh I see a bomb'.
The 7th grade student said: 'I was upset and I felt like I was put in the corner and like everybody was just looking at me.'
The English and Language Arts teacher was removed from the classroom while school officials investigate but community activist, Quanell X, and Waleed's family want her permanently dismissed.
Quanell X told KHOU that 'no religion should be targeted by and disrespected by any administrator on any school campus'.

The First Colony Middle School (pictured) teacher was showing a movie to her class when she called Waleed the derogatory name. The District released a statement saying the teacher is on probation as school officials continue to investigate
Waleed's family said they will keep him enrolled at First Colony Middle School and in addition to firing the teacher in question, would like religious sensitivity training for both students and teachers.
'Just because my son is a Muslim doesn't mean he is a terrorist,' Malek Abushaaban told KHOU.
'He's an American. He's as American as anybody else. He was born here… that's all he knows is how to be an American.'
The Fort Bend ISD school district released a statement that said the 'District does not support the teacher's actions'.
'While the teacher reports her statements were made in the context of trying to make a point about negative stereotypes, District officials do not believe that the teacher exercised the appropriate sensitivity expected of the District's educators, and do not believe that the statements were made in a manner that is in keeping with the District's Core Beliefs and Commitments', the statement reads.
In lit. class we watched, read and went to the off Broadway production of Macbeth.
We watched and read Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, Grapes of Wrath, and many, many more.
But that is not the issue.
The teacher was out of line and should be removed for the rest of the year at least.

"You can make ANYTHING about English and Language Arts."
An Indian movie in English class. Ever wonder why your students are doing so poorly?
Couple that with teachers who claim that algebra isn't necessary, and you have a problem.
Meh...some do poorly, some thrive. Just like every other free country. Thats why people are literally dying to bring their kids to the US. My signature line says it all...

Why are they watching movies in class? What does the movie have to do with English and Language Arts?
It was after the Staar testing which is usually blocked out for the whole day. If they all finished early I can see why they put on a movie. Usually for testing you are not in your normal class schedule so it would have been hard to pick up where you left off teaching wise.
We used to watch The Princess Bride in similar situations.
Teaching doesn't pay the best and the work conditions suck. Smart people do other things and make more money. There is no reason for an intelligent person to become a teacher these days.
I have been begging my DD to consider another profession. Sad, but it's true.
She has decided to double major in psychology and education. She will have more options for her masters this way and it will only mean taking 3 extra classes.

I wouldn't teach or be a social worker. You spend years and years in college only to come out and make minimum wage.

Really? Money isnt everything. Some people genuinely have a heart for teaching. DSD is an early interventionist for low income disabled kids. Shes never going to be a millionaire, but she LOVES her job and her kids.
Flan LIKES being a librarian. Its not in the top money making careers. I guess she should quit to make more money elsewhere.
Your comment is disturbing...

No. Money is not everything. But it helps pay the bills. We say all the time how people shouldn't major in soemthing if their prospects to make a living aren't clear. Well, in a lot of areas, teaching isn't a way to make a living. There are plenty of areas where the teachers don't make enough to live in their school districts, or even in their state. Do you think it's wise to enter into a profession where you won't be able to support yourself? I don't.
The only people I know who are teachers, who have lasted in their profession, are married to people who support the entire household and the teacher's salary is their "fun money".
Yes, there are plenty of reasons to enter a profession. You need to enjoy what you are doing. But you also need to be able to support yourself and perhaps your family one day. Teaching isn't that profession anymore. That's one reason why we don't have as many male teachers anymore. They go into administration in order to make enough money to support their household.
I think it's irresponsible to enter into a profession if you can't support yourself on the salary.

I think teaching is a calling rather then a career. My son had a awesome English teacher in high school who had encouraged him and worked with him a lot. When I talked to him you can really tell that he loved to teach. He worked as a waiter on weekends to supplement his income and as far as I know he is still doing both.
He has made a big difference in my son's life and I consider him a true Teacher.
In DD's graduating class of 150, she is the only person who is going to be a teacher. The only one. People who pay tens of thousands of dollars for their child's education don't want them to become teachers. There is a reason for that.
DD had several "almost Ivy" schools looking at her for college sports. Not one of those schools had an even decent education program. The best colleges for education are state schools. Why do you think that is?
Teaching is a calling for sure. People who are amazing teachers always say they felt called to the profession. But it isn't a profession that the country takes seriously. We should. But we just don't.

How sad that he has to do that. I am sure he would be an even better teacher if he was able to rest and rejuvenate instead of work a second job.

my father was a teacher and so was my husband. Both left the profession for jobs that were better able to support the family. They could have stayed in teaching, but we didn't want to go on welfare. And with my husband's teaching salary, we would have qualified.

I was going to say, around here most of the single teachers qualify for welfare. I love teachers. But we just don't pay them enough.

I think there is nothing better than a great teacher. They are amazing. But to knowing enter a profession where you qualify for welfare?! Thats isn't responsible right?!We would say someone shouldn't major in history or art for the same reason!

Exactly. How many times on this board have we read Dear Prudie letters where we talk about people making bad decisions regarding college? Tons of times. It's just not a profitable career.

Which just shows how the value we place on OUR CHILDREN...Sad, very sad.
A lot of the schools that pursued DD for college didn't even have education as a major. Private schools drop it all the time. If it was a great profession that everyone wanted to undertake, they would have it. The fact is people who have options tend to choose something else.

We invest very little in our children and the elderly. Which tells us what we value. And yes, teaching is a noble profession. But the reality is you also have to have a job where you can support yourself. In some cases, teaching doesn't even do that.

The starting teacher's salary in Texas is $27,900. Subtract from that the $300-$1000 a year most teachers spend on classroom supplies...and you are not looking at much. A teacher with a master's degree and 22 years of experience makes $45,000. That's ridiculous. And probably not enough to live off of.

Oh, no! Not psychology!

OMG! That's it? That's not very much.
An elementary school techer with 20 years of experience makes $83,685 here.
The poverty level in the U.S. for a single person is $11,770.
There is not a state in the union that starts teachers out anywhere close to that, so to say all these single teachers would qualify for welfare is absurd.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Add in a couple kids though. If you have two kids that brings it down. And if you're divorced and the dad is not paying support it's easy to see how people get there.

That's different from "single".
However, for a family of four, it is $24,300--and if you have information that teachers are making less than that, I would like to see it.

Here is the average teacher starting salaries by state as put out by the National Education Association--who would have an interest in making that number as low as possible for public consumption:
The lowest number on here is still $30,000. You can argue all day whether or not teacher are underpaid--and I would probably agree that they are--but they are NOT swelling the welfare rolls, either.

According to your posted data, the average weekly gross is $695.01.
That's before taxes and insurance and any other deductions.
So take home might be between $400-$500. +/-
That's not a whole lot left to live on.

Remember though, that's the average only for that state. Meaning some school districts in those states pay less!! Some pay more, but some pay less.

You know you don't have to meet the poverty level to get benefits right? You qualify for benefits at 1.25 or 1.5 times the poverty rate in some cases. So teachers making more than the actual poverty rate you quoted would qualify for benefits.

The school district in Texas where we go fishing was so desperate for high school teachers that they BUILT 4 houses for teachers! Sure, they could have put up 4 double-wide mobil homes, but these were site built, right across the street from the school. Nice houses, too. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2-car garage, beautifully landscaped, with an attractive stucco privace fence around the entire enclave.
Why?
Because they couldn't attract enough qualified teachers with the salary they were offering (and they couldn't change the salaries until they got rid of the present school board - the stingy misers!)
They seem to pump out far too many teachers in our area. And, a lot of those teachers do wind up moving out of state. Here in PA we usually are flooded with applicants so we can pick and choose. But, yes, for the wages, they spend 4 years paying for college to come out and make $35k -$40K to start. Our teachers top out at $67k so it isn't like they make a ton of money. Yes, they have good hours and lots of time off. But, honestly, i don't think i would take on that job. The classroom teachers have so many more things to deal with nowadays than just teaching the subject. People seem to think anyone can be a teacher. Teaching material is only one part of teaching as there are so many social issues, medical issues, mental health and family issues and on and on.
