Teachers should get paid more. They get crap for the level of education they have to have and the work they do.

BUT, that does not excuse teachers who take the job from having the responsibility of doing to right. They know what the pay is going into it. Just like where the guy screamed at the girl and told her she was only good for making babies, the answer is the same - if you don't have the personality and patience to deal properly with kids, DON'T BECOME A TEACHER.

I agree with that. You don't become a teacher to get rich. Most of the teachers I know don't spend a lot of time complaining about their pay. They understand that it is low in relation to other BS degree type jobs. As for patience, I think that teachers lose patience when they are unsupported by Administration and get mixed messages from Admin. Not excusing it but saying that the best schools have a TEAM approach where they focus on the quality of the education and teachers feel supported and empowered and not squashed.
As for this teacher in the LW, they should deal with it the way they do any other verbal infraction by a teacher.

You people need to look up some facts.

The poverty level in the U.S. for a single person is $11,770.

There is not a state in the union that starts teachers out anywhere close to that, so to say all these single teachers would qualify for welfare is absurd.

You know you don't have to meet the poverty level to get benefits right? You qualify for benefits at 1.25 or 1.5 times the poverty rate in some cases. So teachers making more than the actual poverty rate you quoted would qualify for benefits.

All the numbers I cited were more than double, almost triple, the $11,770 poverty level.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

That's for ONE person.  Throw a couple of kids into the mix.

I think teaching is a calling rather then a career. My son had a awesome English teacher in high school who had encouraged him and worked with him a lot. When I talked to him you can really tell that he loved to teach. He worked as a waiter on weekends to supplement his income and as far as I know he is still doing both.

He has made a big difference in my son's life and I consider him a true Teacher.

How sad that he has to do that. I am sure he would be an even better teacher if he was able to rest and rejuvenate instead of work a second job.

Yes and the saddest part he makes more has a waiter then a teacher.  He really loves to teach though and I loved how excited he sounded when he talked about his students.  He is still a very young man.

Even at the 24,000 figure--which would cover three kids--1.5 times level would be 36,000 which most are going to be over.  Plus, the figures don't take into account extra duty pay, either.

sure, I'm sure you can find one single mother out there with six kids who teaches and gets some welfare--but the exceptions do not the rule make.  To make a blanket statement that teachers are mostly all on welfare is flat out untrue.
