he administration at the University of Toronto was recently enlightened on why two separate washrooms are generally established for men and women sharing co-ed residencies.
The University is temporarily changing its policy on gender-neutral bathrooms after two separate incidents of "voyeurism" were reported on campus September 15 and 19. Male students within the University’s Whitney Hall student residence were caught holding their cellphones over female students’ shower stalls and filming them as they showered.
Melinda Scott, dean of students at the University of Toronto, told The Daily Wire that campus police had been contacted immediately and worked with residence staff to “support impacted students and ensure the safety of the Residences.”
“Given the serious nature of these incidents and the impact on directly affected students, we made the decision to specifically designate some washrooms in Whitney Hall for those who identify as men and those who identify as women,” Scott said.

The Daily Wire contacted the University dean and staff members and asked them how they could be unfeeling enough to force men to use men’s washrooms and women to use women’s washrooms.

Makes it sound like sound they went from gender neutral to separate, but Transgender can still use the other restroom.
But people in this board think all bathrooms should be gender neutral. No one should feel threatened by the opposite sex, and if the are, they are fear mongers...

And people have said all along that the solution is a his/hers/unisex - but that wasn't good enough b/c those using the "unisex" would feel bad about not being able to use the gender specific.

That didn't have anything to do with Transgenders. As cadiver pointed out:

Pretty much says transgenders can still use the restroom of the gender that they identify as.
If a place is going to go Unisex though, what they should do is make the stalls into "water-closets" with floor to ceiling walls (even if that's only accomplished by extending the thin stall walls up and down as needed) and "normal" doors (no cracks to peek through). That would eliminate the problem that occurred at the Toronto University.
Unisex is fine if done right with a little forethought.
Two incidents of peeping on one campus?
OBVIOUSLY the entire concept is at fault!!!!
For on thing, these are coed bathrooms, which have NOTHING to do with trans people. My school had coed bathrooms and have for years. Never heard of a single incident of inappropriate behavior.
There are a few other places around that have codd bathrooms, and oddly enough, most men are perfectly normal decent human beings who would not take pictures of women on the toilet, so yeah, they work fine.
They should focus on finding the perpetrator, not fussing over the bathroom.

No. There shouldn't be co-ed OR transgender bathrooms. If you're born a male you use the mens room. If you're born a female you use the ladies room. Why would any other way be necessary?

And obviously cultures that seperate men from the women at every stage of daily life have a perfect record of harmony between the sexes. That OBVIOUSLY is the only thing that prevents men from being jerks.
Well as I never said that you can believe what you want. I would never send my 19 year old daughter or son to a school with coed bathrooms. If you're ok with that then that's your choice.

I shared a bathroom with 4 brothers, 2 sisters, and both my parents. I'm not sure how that is considered separating men and women at every stage. Dramatic much?

Generally, cultures that insist on separation of the sexes have MORE social injustice and abuse of women than ones that don't.
This one school does not change that.
And I didn't even ask about the bathrooms when I went. It was just a thing.
Well you can doing everything together and it still doesn't stop social injustice or abuse of women. I'm also pretty sure that at the University of Toronto is not a culture you're talking about but sure lets bring some other cultures that have nothing to do with sharing freaking bathrooms.

*I* shouldn't have to go into a woman's restroom and wonder if I'm sharing it with a man. You do not have the right to tell me I have to be comfortable with that just because you are.
Yes, people are going to break the law, anyway - but there is no need to make it easier for them.

With all the family bathrooms all around, I'm not sure why this is an issue. You have a penis, use the men's room. You don't, use the women's. You are confused, use the family bathroom.
I like family bathrooms, too, but try not to use them. They're usually so much dirtier.
You want to talk about DIRTY? I've used the men's bathroom (single toilet) at a few gas stations because the line for the women's was too long & the men's one was empty!
I've used the men's room at work and it was cleaner. And provided reading materials.
I've used unisex bathrooms in other countries. The stalls were usually floor to almost ceiling and were sealed so there was no peeking. I don't know why they can't seem to manage that here. This seems to be one of the few (if only) country where using the bathroom is a big deal.

There are a couple here. At least one for some strange reason has separate doors mark mens/women's going into the same room.
I also don't understand assigned rooms when each has a single toilet.

And a lock. It makes no sense to me.
I used unisex bathrooms in Japan where I had to walk past the urinals to use the stall. And yes, there were men using the urinals.
When a big deal is made out of something then it becomes a big deal.
