U.S. Admits More than TWICE the Number of Migrants from Muslim World than Europe

The United States admits more than twice the number of immigrants from majority-Muslim nations than from countries in the European Union, according to a Senate analysis of Department of Homeland Security data.

According a chart released Thursday by the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, in the five years spanning from FY 2009 through FY 2013, the U.S. issued approximately 680,000 green cards to migrants from Muslim nations compared to the 270,000 green cards issued to migrants from the European Union.

Permanent residency, or a green card, is a step on the path to U.S. citizenship. A green card also provides eligibility for work authorization and, after a time, can open the doors to federal benefits.

The total in the chart, the subcommittee notes, also includes refugees who are eligible for permanent residency after a year. Unlike other types migrants to the U.S., refugees are immediately eligible for a public benefits like Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as food stamps).

“Assuming no change in immigration policies, the U.S. can expect to grant green cards to another 680,000 migrants from Muslim-majority nations over the next five years,” the subcommittee noted in an analysis of the data. “The numbers, however, could be higher still: Census Bureau data shows migration from the Middle East to be one of the fastest-growing categories.”

The subcommittee added that Obama’s plan to increase the level of refugees the U.S. accepts, including substantial increases of refugees from terrorist hot-spots like Syria, will compound the level of migration from the Muslim world to the U.S.

“[I]f left in place, the President’s refugee plan would substantially boost the annual number of migrants from this region admitted to the U.S. who, in turn, would be able to petition for their relatives to migrate to the U.S. in the future,” the subcommittee added.

The Muslim nation migrant total, per the subcommittee, includes: Pakistan (83K), Iraq (83K), Bangladesh (75K), Iran (73K), Egypt (45K), Somalia (31K), Uzbekistan (24K), Turkey (22K), Morocco (22K), Jordan (20K), Albania (20K), Lebanon (16K), Yemen (16K), Indonesia (15K), Syria (14K), Sudan (13K), Afghanistan (11K), Sierra Leone (10K), Guinea (8K), Senegal (7K), Saudi Arabia (7K), Algeria (7K), Kazakhstan (7K), Kuwait (5K), Gambia (5K), United Arab Emirates (4K), Azerbaijan (4K), Mali (3K), Burkina Faso (3K), Kyrgyzstan (3K), Kosovo (3K), Mauritania (2K), Tunisia (2K), Tajikistan (2K), Libya (2K), Turkmenistan (1K), Qatar (1K), Chad (1K).

The European Union migrant total includes: United Kingdom (65K), Poland (36K), Germany (32K), France (20K), Romania (20K), Bulgaria (14K), Italy (14K), Spain (10K), Ireland (8K), Netherlands (6K), Greece (5K), Hungary (5K), Lithuania (5K), Sweden (5K), Portugal (4K), Belgium (3K), Denmark (3K), Slovakia (3K), Austria (2K), Croatia (2K), Czech Republic (2K), Finland (2K), Former Czechoslovakia (2K), Latvia (2K), Estonia (1K), Cyprus (600), Slovenia (400), Malta (200), Luxembourg (100).

Your numbers are WAY off.
Turkey has admitted 22 thousand as per the article. Try 1.7 million.
lebanon is at 1.2 million.
Every number you quoted is wrong.

Those numbers are from the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest.

And Turkey and Lebanon are NOT part of the European Union, which is the subject of the article, and are not referenced in that article.

Besides the fact that "admitting" isn't the same as issuing green cards to.

The list isn't complete. We have one here in my county.

The known, registered mosques don't concern me.

It's the quiet groups that meet secretly in basements that I worry about.
