Not exactly.  The Republicans were the party of Abraham Lincoln and were more in favor back then of a strong federal government in order to expand the country, the railroads, the education system, etc. while the Democrats - who were slave owners - didn't want the federal government telling them what to do and believed ardently in State rights over the federal government.   

Over time, the Republicans stopped wanting to expand the federal government powers more and more (kind of an "enough is enough" change), and the Democrats, especially under FDR, became further and further left in terms of expanding the federal government's powers.  The Republican party's stance as anti-big government also became firm during this time as they were opposed to most of the socialist programs of the New Deal.  

So in the issue of very limited central government vs. bigger federal government - yes.  For everything else - not really.

There was actually a while, in the early 1900s, where the parties were actually pretty similar.  

 

On social issues - the rights of the individual man, for example, the Republican position pretty much stayed the same.  The Republicans are the party that tried to provide protections for blacks after the civil war.  And they put forth the amendment for black men to get to vote (although we shall not pretend this wasn't based upon hope that those black men would vote Republican and keep them in power).  The Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act.

I won't go that far, but the mud slinging never stopped.

And every single thing that's come out of the democratic side is lead with "if it'll beat Trump".

Heck, Biden, along with a couple others, have come right out and said the only reason they are running is to get Trump out of office.

Nothing about policy, their ideas, nothing.

 Very true.  Holds the same for Rep opposing Trump.  They have no platform except to get rid of Trump.  They collectively are pushing more people to supporting Trump.
