One the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I served our Wheelchair Square Dancers 14 different kinds of pie! 16 people completely devoured all of it! It took 2 evenings and a full day to make them all, but it was soooo worthwhile. They were served their Thanksgiving "turkey" on Monday (they got sandwiches on Thursday), so at least I was able to give them dessert closer to turkey day!
Have you ever made cherry blueberry pie? Mine made the front page of the "living" section of our local paper a few years ago.
DH1 and I got married mid-November, and we returned from our honeymoon the day before Thanksgiving. I had shopped ahead of time, because I knew I would have to serve a horde (DH's 6 kids, plus 3 SILs, plus a niece, and two toddlers). The children had asked for apple, blueberry, and cherry pies - OK, no problem, 2 cans of each filling for deep-dish pies. Thanksgiving morning, I went to make the pies. Apple- done. When I went to open the 2 cans of cherry, I found only one - the same for the blueberry. WTH? Turned out, DS had decided to snack on the pie fillings - hey, she's got two, I can have one. Right?
Knowing that mixing cherry & blueberry would result in an unappealing color, I got a little creative. Opened the cherry, upended it onto the center of the pastry, and left it there. Opened the blueberry, and spooned it around the can of cherry, getting it as close to the outer edge as possible. I then punctured the bottom of the cherry can, and s l o w l y lifted it up, so it could ooze out and make a perfect bull's eye. The result was: red bull's eye, surrounded by a perfect circle of blue, and then the white crust. I put a lattice work crust on top, and baked as usual. Picture perfect! Tasty, too.
I can not make my own crust. I have tried and it never turns out.
But pilsbury crusts are good.
I love fruit pies.
Haven't come across one I don't like.
Freezer pies, or ice box pies, are divine in Summer. Nothing like a really cold lemon or key lime pie on a hot summer day.

It was creamy but thick, like custard. And it had a meringue and she put it in the oven and it would have these firm, toasted peaks of yumminess.
She was not a recipe cook. No one has been able to duplicate it.

Wow!

This was served in my school cafeteria once. It LOOKED like strawberry pie, and I bought it.
Yuck.
Grandma made it. We called it frog pond pie.
I never tried it.

For shame on you guys!! Homemade rhubarb pie (perhaps with a bit of vanilla ice cream) is one of the great eating experiences. Not the kind that is mixed with strawberrys, the real, undiluted rhubarb pie. Just love it. Have not had a piece since 1987 when I was in a small town in northern Iowa at a locally owned cafe. The cook's wife made all their pastries....
I eat pie several times a year, by the slice since I cannot finish a whole pie by myself (too sweet). I do not bring any pies home and currently do not bake (I have a gas oven and prefer electric). I have made no-bake pies for friends in the past. Some flavors I enjoy are pumpkin/pumpkin cream, Dutch apple, lemon meringue, key lime, banana cream, macadamia nut cream, blueberry/blueberry cream, strawberry/ strawberry cream, peach, and guava.

My cousin "B" drove here from Philadelphia to see me this afternoon.
We went to a local diner and talked over a meal.
I had lemon meringue pie.
That sounds like a lovely way to spend Sunday.
Was the pie good?

Not a huge fan of pie, but when I do eat it, it has to be cherry or peach.
No chocolate, pecan, peanut butter, pumpkin, sugar cream, sweet potato, custard, etc., pie.
Nope, nope, nope.
I'd rather give it to the raccoons. They love sweets.
